Learning Intentions and Success Criteria
Quinalow P-10 State School keeps up-to-date with the latest research into quality teaching and learning. This is why every
classroom has adopted an evidenced based approach to support student learning and enhance achievement by developing
Learning Intentions and Success Criteria.
Learning Intentions are a statement of what students are learning, or in other words the goal of the learning. They
make the purpose of the lesson clear to students so they can focus on the big purpose of the learning.
Success Criteria are provided to make it clear to the students how they will be assessed when achieving the
Learning Intentions. They provide the students with a detailed understanding of what they need to do to be successful in this
lesson or unit.
There is strong evidence to show that students who understand the end goal of the learning, and the steps required to achieve this goal, have a far greater opportunity of succeeding.

From the classroom
Prep/Year 1: Welcome to Term 4. This term we are very excited to be continuing our “Out Of This World” theme. The
children are looking forward to designing and making rockets and will be learning how to write procedural texts. We are
currently reading the book Wombat Stew and we will be creating our own weird and wonderful recipes using wacky ingredients
in our writing lessons.
In reading groups students are continuing working on individual goals to improve their skills and are enjoying their new
decodable readers.
In Science, Preps and 1’s are learning about moving things, light and sound and we will be exploring these concepts by
creating our own moving toys that can also produce light and sound.
In Maths, Preps and 1’s are learning their numbers from 1-100 and beyond and have had fun learning about fractions, ½, ⅓
and ¼.
For the Arts we will be focusing on drama and dance and will start practising for Awards Day next week. In the garden the
children would like to rejuvenate the garden beds and start planting flowers and some edible plants. If parents wish to donate a punnet of flowers or veggies we would love it!
Year 2/3: Welcome to our last term of school. This year has definitely gone quick!
English - This term our focus in English will be “Poetry”. The students will read different poems and identify the different
language features. The students will be also working on vocabulary, as some poems can be a bit difficult to understand
because of the unusual vocabulary we can find in them sometimes.
Maths - Year 2: We have been working on 2D and 3D shapes. The students have also been working on fractions and place
value with numbers to 1000.
Year 3: The students have been working on fractions and solving word problems using arrays, grouping and part-part whole.
HASS - Year 2: The focus this semester has been “Connections to Places” so we have been learning about the continents and
some countries, cities and towns. We have also been discussing the different ways to travel to these places. The students
have been using diagrams and graphs to identify and represent these places’ similarities and differences.
Year 3: The students this semester have been exploring different places near and far and have been identifying similarities and
differences among these places using diagrams and graphs.
Science: The year 2 students will be working on combining materials for a purpose.
Year 4: Welcome to Term 4. As usual, it is a busy term with completing Semester assessments of Media Arts (with Mr
Lillis), Design Technology (Pinball Machines) and HASS.
In English, we are looking at Persuasive Texts in Advertisements.
In Maths, students will be working with fractions, analysing data, investigating time and solving money problems.
In Science, the topic is Materials, its use and properties. Busy times ahead!
Year 5/6: It is great to see the dedication to school work that the 5/6 class are exhibiting again this term. Additionally it
is also terrific to see the great effort that is going into assessment tasks.
The students are enjoying their Instrumental Music lessons and by all reports are progressing well. The year 6 students will
participate in another of their exciting transition activities with our High School department this week.
We have just finished a unit in English where the students wrote a narrative transformation of the poem, The Man from
Ironbark. To present this, as part of their assessment, the students then made a powerpoint where they had to use hyperlinks
and record themselves reading the story. We were extremely impressed with the quality of both the narratives and the
powerpoints they created. Please ask your child to show them to you as they are well worth it!

Next Meeting - Monday 16 November 2020 at 3:00pm in the media room.
Unfortunately our Swim Teacher has had to withdraw due to personal reasons and as yet, we have been unable to find a replacement teacher. At this stage, there will be no lessons available in Term 4. Encouragingly, there was a healthy interest in lessons and the committee is working hard to find a replacement! We are still hoping to offer block lessons during the summer holidays.
The next swim club meeting will be held Wednesday 21st October 2020, at 3pm in the media room. All lifeguards and CPR qualified P&C members are invited to attend if available.
