Quilting the Kaye Wood Way It’s the technique that makes it easy!

Jumping Jacks QuiltBaby Quilt 52" x 64"

The Jumping Jacks Quilt is made from wedges easily cut with the Starmaker® 5 Master Template.

A 6th fabric is the center circle of each block, easily made with Janome's Circle Stitch Attachment

Cut 5 wedge fabrics into strips: A & E cut 4 strips 6" x 40/42" B & D cut 4 strips 7" x 40/42" C cut 4 strips 8"x 40/42"

Cut 64 wedges from each fabric.

At the flat top of the Starmaker® 5, there is a number 20 in a circle. This means that 20 wedges cut with this angle will make a perfect circle

Place the Starmaker®5 with the line under the 20 at the top of the A & E strips. The #6 line on the Starmaker® 5 lays along the bottom of the strip.

Cut on both sides of the Starmaker®5 to get the first wedge shape.

Cut the second wedge by turning the Starmaker®5 upside down with the line under the 20 at the bottom of the strip. The #6 line on the Starmaker® 5 lays along the top of the strip.

Sew the wedges into 24 quarter block #1s and 24 quarter block #2s.

Press seam allowances away from the C wedge.

Square up the blocks.Place a square ruler on top of the block. One corner of the ruler is in the middle of the C wedge. Align the lines on the ruler with the edges of the A and E wedges.

Rotary cut off the tips of the wedges.

Sew the blocks into squares.Sew four #1 blocks together into a large square.Press the seam allowances.

Sew four #2 blocks together into a large square.Press the seam allowances.

Center circles.Make piping to trim the circle.Cut bias strips ¾" wide.Fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.Put cording into the fold. Sew close to the cording with a piping or zipper foot.15" of piping is needed for each for each circle.

Place a 6" square of heavy tear-away stabilizer under a 5" square of fabric.

Attach the Circular Sewing Attachment to the machine. Center the square on the pin with the measurement set at 2¼".

Using a zipper foot or piping foot, sew the piping to the circle, right sides together, raw edges to the outside of the square.Trim the square ¼" outside the circle.Remove the tear-away stabilizer.Press the seam allowances toward the circle.

Center and pin the circle on top of the pieced square.

Using a piping or zipper foot, stitch in the ditch through the seam between the circle and the piping.

Sew the quilt together.Sew the squares into rows, matching seam allowances.Press seam allowances of each row in opposite directions.

Sew rows together matching seamlines. Press seam allowances.

Scrap wedge border.Cut wedges from 5" wide strips of fabric, using the 20 angle of the Starmaker® 5.Include dark, medium and light fabrics, solids and prints.Include fabrics used in the quilt and also coordinating fabrics.

Sew the wedges into rows, alternating the wide and narrow edges of each piece.

Sew the top and bottom scrap borders, right sides together to the quilt. Square up the ends. Press the seam allowances away from the scrap border.

Sew the side borders, right sides together to the quilt. Press the seam allowances away from the scrap border.

Finish the Quilt.Add the 2" borders.Layer the top, batting and backing. Machine or hand quilt.Cut the binding strips 1¾" wide.Sew the strips into one long binding strip.Miter each corner following the video directions on www.youtube.com/user/kayewood or the written tip sheets on www.kayewood.com.
