Make it Mini

Yes, you can do it!

Are you afraid of handling small pieces?? Do you feel your fingers are too big?? Do you not know where to begin? Do you have a basket of scraps you just can’t throw away, but are too small for your usual projects?? Take this class and learn some simple techniques that can eliminate some of these fears. Let me show you how it can be done.

Learn a few of the simple techniques I use when making miniature quilt blocks. For each technique one or more block patterns will be given. Class discussion will include how to set blocks, sew narrow borders, quilting and 1/8”

bindings. All examples will be done for blocks three inches or smaller, but can be applied to any size block. After taking this class, students should find their sewing precision and accuracy has increased.

There will be no “one” project made. Each student can take the techniques learned and create a miniature quilt using one or more of the blocks created in the class. For illustration, I will bring many show and tell miniature quilts.

A class supply list will be available on this web page at a later date. Some pre class work may be required

Class enrollment is limited to 20 students.

Hosted by Bay Oaks, Magnolia Quilters of Orange Grove, Sand Stitchers and the Biloxi Lighthouse Guild

Long Beach, MS Who: Amy Aderman, representative for Blank Fabrics GSQA member Amy Aderman, a Sales Representative for Blank Fabrics, will discuss her experience as a fabric rep - what she does, what her life on the job is like, how shops select and order fabric as well as other aspects of the fabric industry - design, production - where & how it's made, fabric quality, etc.

Hosting guilds are Bay Oaks, Magnolia Quilters of Orange Grove, Sand Stitchers, and Biloxi Lighthouse Quilters. Where: First United Methodist Church 208 Pine Street Long Beach, MS. 39560 Start time, 10:00 a.m. Directions: Both East and West on I-10, take exit 28. Turn south. Follow until you pass a car wash on your right. Turn right onto Jeff Davis, go over RR tracts and turn right onto the first street. This street will run into the church.

Hotel: Holiday Inn Express, 300 Beach Blvd W., Long Beach, 228-864-5440 We will be making quilts for Brenda’s House, a safe home and temporary residence for foster children in Hancock County. We will be collecting fabric, batting and backing for these quilts.

Amy Aderman My Experience as a Fabric Rep

July 28, 2018 A little bit about Amy

Amy is cut from the same cloth (pardon the pun) of many others that rep for the sister companies of The Blank Quilting Corp. and Studioe Fabrics in that she is also an avid quilter, award-winning in fact.

Amy lives in Lafayette, LA which is in the southwest part of the state – the heart of Cajun Country. She has been sewing since she was a small child and became a quilter about 6 years ago. She has had a few creative jobs such as designing children’s clothing patterns, making decorative accessory samples and owned a small custom drapery/home decór business. She has also taught a few sewing/quilting classes and tinkered with some sewing machine repairs. But in recent years, she has been doing office and bookkeeping work – waiting for a fresh new ‘creative’ opportunity to come along.

So in December when the rep who had that territory left, a quilt shop owner called Amy, knowing that she would be perfect for the job.

“I started at the end of January and am thrilled to be doing something where I can connect to other creative people who share my love for fabrics!” she says. “What has surprised me the most is I always thought I was more introverted, but I have common ground with shop owners, and we immediately have a connection. This has been a really exciting change for me.”

Now to toot her horn a little bit, Amy has won a 2nd place ribbon in 2015 Machine Quilting Expo (MQX) with this quilt entitled “Entwined.” It was one of four selected to be featured on MQX 2016 calendar. It also won a Teacher’s Choice ribbon in 2015 Machine Quilters Showcase (MQS).

Thread Painted Landscapes Nancy Prince, winner of Best of Show, Houston, 2014 with her quilt ”On This Winter Day” will be our presenter in October. She will have a class on Thread Painting on Friday, October 26th.

Workshop Description: My most popular workshop introduces the two thread painting techniques I use. Using my anyone-can-do-it approach, you will learn how simple thread painting is. A zigzag or straight stitch are the only stitches necessary to create amazing thread painted designs. No artistic skill is needed so come join us for a day full of fun. Simple designs have been selected to boost your confidence right away

Thread Painting Thread – 40 weight rayon or polyester

Tree trunk - variegated dark brown (available for sale in workshop)

§ Evergreens and tree canopy - several shades of different greens – at least dark, medium and

light green (all in the same color family) and variegated green (optional)

Fence – variegated medium brown (available for sale in workshop)

Bring additional rayon or polyester threads in greens, browns, rust and yellow in your stash

§ Pre-wind (1) bobbin with 60 weight gray bobbin fill

Notions

6" wooden or plastic machine embroidery hoop (available for sale in workshop)

Basic sewing supplies – scissors, 80/12 machine needles, tweezers, etc.

§ Sewing machine

o Please know how your machine works and make sure it is in good working order before class. For thread painting you will need to know how to drop the feed dogs, how to adjust your machine for free-motion machine embroidery, how to change the upper tension and know where to

change the width on the zigzag stitch. If you are unsure of these machine adjustments, please check with your machine dealer before class. A solid sewing platform is recommended. You will need a zigzag throat plate. Thanks for checking this out before class.

Open toe free motion foot such as #24 for Bernina or a stippling open toe foot for Viking. Janome machines – please bring the darning foot and NOT the convertible foot. The convertible foot cannot span a 3.5 mm zigzag stitch. Visibility on machines with a clear oval plastic foot is practically zero. Cutting away between the two red lines on this type foot works on most machines. Check with your machine dealer for optional free motion feet.

Embroidery or extra bobbin case (only if you have one)

§ Magnifier – only if you have one and you have difficulty seeing

Workshop Fee: $15.00

Kit includes: Custom printed background fabric, (2) pieces of printed stabilizer, (2) pieces of stabilizer backing, Tulle, CD.

§ $10.50 - 6" wooden machine embroidery hoop

§ $11.00 – Printed background fabric (matches workshop sample shown below), printed barn, tire swing and quilt

§ $8.00 – Variegated browns, greens and oranges (for large tree)

Prices subject to change

NOTE: The project for the workshop can be seen on my website, www.nancyprince.com, under the Workshop section, Thread Painted Landscapes - Summer

Wasn’t Gail Garber wonderful?!?

She had a total of 155 students in 8 classes stretching between Baton Rouge and Pensacola (with a northern detour to Jackson.) and lectured to over 280 people. What a great resource for the members of GSQA! So, now what? Well, there is room for input from you regarding who you want for 2020. I have some ideas, but I would like input from you. Think of a teacher you have WANTED to take from for years but just cannot afford - what about domestic machine quilting? Thread painting? Applique? Finishing techniques? Transferring pictures to quilts? I need you to send me your requests for a traveling teacher by September 2018. Yes, September 2018. It often takes a couple of years to get the teacher you want, and I will need to act quickly in the fall to get it underway! Thanks in advance. Cena Harmon

2020 GSQA Quilt Show: April 3 - 4, Northshore Harbor Center, Slidell, Louisiana

From: Laura Comiskey Broders

Yes, you are reading the right headline! The April 13 - 14, 2018 Show was wonderful. Thank so many of you for participating with your entries; volunteering with the Rosebud Luncheon and Show; donating your time, talent and gifts used as raffle items and door prizes; setting up, taking down, sharing your knowledge with our guests…. So many ways so many welcomed each other and attendees. While attendance was down from the 2016 Show because of Saturday’s stormy weather, we still had over 1130 attendees over the two day Show. The judges from the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges were wowed by the entries and honored to participate in our Show. Several quilts were recommended for entry into National shows.

The Demonstrations and Lectures held during the Show were fun, informative and a nice time to see who else shared your interests.

The Rosebud Luncheon on April 7 at the Crowne Plaza was a wonderful celebration of the dedication and hard work of so many volunteers as we led into the week of the Show and judging of the entries. The funds raised from the Gift Basket Raffles underwrote the awards to the Best of Show Award.

Now, on to 2020…. I new member will be the Show Chair and Director of the 2020 Quilt Show. Is it you? Do you know of someone who may be interested in discussing what the job entails or a chair of one of the committees that support the Show? Share your interest with me or your President or President-elect. GSQA has many members with many talents, please share yours with us.

Again, thank you for letting me offer my services as Quilt Show Chair for the last two beautiful Shows, which could never have been presented without so many participating and supporting our regional guild. Laura

The quarterly general meeting of the Gulf States Quilting

Association was held on Saturday, April 28, 2018. The

meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. by President

Roberta Wilson.

President Roberta Wilson welcomed and recognized The

Pensacola Guild for hosting the meeting and thanked all

who travelled to the meeting. Recognized members,

guests, and first time attendees.

Abbreviated minutes of the meeting was read by Connie

Day. A motion was made to accept the minutes by Angie

Madden and seconded by Tommy Morden.

Gaye Smith read the Treasurer’s report. A discussion of

investments followed.

President Elect - Alesia Williams

The 2018 Opportunity Quilt activities are now over. The 2020 Opportunity Quilt committee has been meeting on a regular schedule and has a design nearly ready to recommend to the Board. Plans are to have block kits available to meet most quilting skill levels. There will be pieced blocks as well as appliqué blocks. The sale of the kits are planned for the October 2018 General Meeting. Alesia thanked the committee for their dedication, knowledge and time to this project. Committee members are Paula McKenna, Laura ?, Pat Chataly, and Mary Girardi.

Quilt Show Director – Laura Broders Laura thanked all those who participated in the 2018 Quilt Show held at the Northshore Harbor Center in Slidell; quilt entries, chairing and/or volunteering their time, talent and support that it takes to make the show successful. Entries increased from the 2016 show. There were a few glitches in moving to the electronic registration, however, help was offered and was overall welcomed. There were 16 vendors, including a few on-line and specialty vendors, and one blade sharpener at the Show. Judy Walker did a wonderful job on the publicity as well as GSQA members marketing the show in their communities. Elizabeth Townsend of “Just Wanna Quilt” prepared a podcast of the show.

GSQA made a presentation of 102 quilts made and donated by members to the St. Tammany Parish Fire and Sheriff departments, Slidell Police Department and Safe Harbor, a shelter for women and children. Those public responders noted their appreciation for the generous donations. The NQA certified judges were “wowed” by the entries. They clearly noticed and remarked that GSQA members had stepped up their game. They were impressed with the designs executed, skilled workmanship and challenges taken by the quilters to push themselves to the next level. Some were recommended to entry into national shows and exhibits. All winner information can be found on the website. Viewers Choice was Cleo Breaux for Woodland Creatures. The Opportunity Quilt was won by Nancy Habisreiting of the Queen Bees Guild of Franklinton. Stormy weather the Saturday of the show and the previous weekend of the Rosebud luncheon impacted attendance at both events. Approximately 1150 quilters, family members, and friends were treated to a colorful display of beauty, talent, perseverance and joy! Pursuit of Excellence-Paula Matthews The February 17th POE was held in Hattiesburg, MS and was hosted by the Stitch n’ Post Quilt Shop. The turnout was great with 20 quilters sewing that day with 5 first time attending a POE. 2 members were attending from a newly organized quilt guild. The next scheduled POE is May 19th, hosted by the Quilting Fans in LaPlace, LA at the St. John Parish Library, 2920 New Highway 51. Please get all applications in to attend. There are a few spots open at this time. Locations are still needed for the 2018/19 POE’s. All that is needed is a room large enough to sit 20 sewers comfortably, and tables and chairs.

Program Director-Therese Springer On July 28th we will meet in Long Beach, MS with hosting guilds Bay Oaks Quilt Guild, Magnolia Quilters of Orange Grove, Sand Stitchers Quilt Guild and the Biloxi Lighthouse Quilters. Amy Aderman will be our speaker. She is a sales rep for Blank Quilting Corporation. The meeting will be at the First United Methodist Church in Long Beach, MS.

Guild Fund Raising

Opportunity at GSQA’s

Educational Seminar

Are you looking for a way to raise funds for

your guild? Each GSQA-Affiliated Guild will

have the option to provide an “Opportunity

Basket” at the GSQA Seminar March 26-30,

2019. Tickets will be sold for each basket and

winners will be drawn from the tickets sold,

similar to what is done at the Rosebud Auction.

The great news is that 50% of the proceeds

raised by each basket will go back to the Guild

that donated it! So what does a basket consist

of? It could be a basket full of fabric, notions,

patterns, and books. It could be a single item

that doesn’t fit in a basket such as an Ott light,

a quilt kit, a SewEZi table or a certificate for

longarm services. A “basket” is really anything

you think will raise money for your Guild. The

Seminar Committee will provide a place to

securely store and display the baskets. We will

also be responsible for selling tickets and

ensuring that funds are sent back to each

Guild.

If your Guild would like to provide an

Opportunity Basket, please contact Margie

Bumm, Seminar Director, at 225-301-5210 or

mbumm43@gmail .com. You must notify us in

advance if your Guild will be providing a basket

so that we can ensure sufficient display space is

available. Baskets may be delivered to the

Seminar Venue (Harbor Center, Slidell, LA)

anytime after noon on March 26, 2019. Come

early for maximum display time. Each basket

should include the name of the donating Guild

and the name, address, phone number, and

email address of the Guild’s president or

treasurer so that funds collected can be

returned to the donating Guild.

Winning tickets will be pulled at 1PM Saturday

March 30, 2019.

Election of Officers Scheduled for October

GSQA Quilt Show

Did you attend the Quilt Show this year? I did and boy

was I impressed with the beautiful quilts displayed!

The variety and workmanship was stunning. It was

hard to pick my favorite for Viewer’s Choice.

I was not the only one who was impressed. I had

several friends who were in the room with the judges

while they

were viewing

the quilts.

Although

specifics are

not to be

shared, what I

heard from

more than

one source,

was when it

came time to

award

ribbons, the

judges had to get out flashlights and magnifying

glasses to look at the stitches in the quilts – front and

back – to make their choices. Amazing!!

If you had a quilt that won a ribbon, congratulations to

you! If you had a quilt that was considered for a

ribbon, job well done!

So, how does this really relate to GSQA? Other than

the fact that we put on the show, I mean? Well, it

means that GSQA is doing its part to educate our

members and stimulate them to achieve improvement

in our quilting abilities. How is this done? Through the

various programs that GSQA offers – the quarterly

meetings with lectures and classes by accomplished

quilters, through our Circuit Teacher program who give

hands-on assistance in learning quilting techniques,

through our Pursuit of Excellence program which

demonstrates new skills that are shared back with our

various guilds, through Seminar and the abundance of

teachers and techniques that are offered and through

Retreats where our fellow quilters and friends share

their

knowledge

and skills with

us.

Have you

attended one

of this various

events that

GSQA offers?

If you did, did

you learn

something or

perhaps share

something with someone else? If you haven’t tried out

one of these events, try one! Not only are they great

learning opportunities, but they offer the chance to

improve your skills, make new friends and HAVE FUN!

To everyone who has learned a new skill or improved a

technique through one of GSQA’s programs and

entered a quilt in the show, kudos to you.

The next time you see one of the chairs for these

various events, tell them of your success. They would

love to hear from you!
