Lincolns Platform Quilt BlockThe finished block measures 14inches square (141/2inchesunfinished).Instructions: Use a white-on-white fabric for the light and a navy blue print for the dark. Use good quality, 100% cottonprewashedfabrics.Block of the Month

Cut thirteen 21/2inch squares from the white-on-white fabric.

2. Cut eight 21/2inch squares from the navy print fabric.

Cut two 47/8inch squares from the white-on-white fabric AND from the navy print fabric; then cut these diagonally. Sew these triangles together to form four 41/2inch squares.

4. Cut four 21/2by 61/2inch strips from the dark blue print.5. Sew a white-on-white 21/2square to each side of a 21/2inch navy print square.

6. Sew a navy print square to a white-on-white square.

7. Sew #6 to the left side of a 41/2inch square and add the strip from step #5 to the top, as shown in the illustration.

8. Assemble the block as pictured; sew a navy print strip to each side of the remaining 21/2inch square. Sew the other navy print strips between the corner squares, as shown.

Your finished (unfinished) block should measure fourteen and one-half inches. Be sure to leave the seam allowance on the block, DO NOT cut it to the 14inch finished size -- as the finished measurement represents the block size after it is sewn into a quilt top.

Jack in the Box Quilt BlockThe finished block measures 121/2inches square.
(13 inches unfinished).Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cottonprewashedfabrics.Cut a three inch square from a medium blue.

Cut eight 33/8inch squares from the medium blue.

Cut four 3by 51/2inch rectangles from a contrasting blue.

Cut four 3by 61/4inch rectangles from a white-on-white.

Cut two 43/8inch squares from the white-on-white.

Cut the 43/8inch white-on-white squares on the diagonal to form four triangles.

Draw a diagonal line on the medium blue 33/8inch squares; then line them up along the edges of the white-on-white rectangles, as shown.*

Sew1/4inch INSIDE the line you drew; then cut along the drawn line. Save the blue triangles you cut off for use in step 9.

Sew the long side of a medium triangle to the short sides of each white-on-white triangle. Press the seam toward the blue.

Piece the units together following the diagram below.

Using an angled ruler with a 45 marking on it, cut the angle on one side. Then cut 21/4strips as shown in the drawing below.

Cut four 27/8squares from a brown print or solid, then cut them on the diagonal. (You will use seven of the triangles.)

Cut three 27/8squares from a white-on-white, then cut them on the diagonal. (You will use five of the triangles.)

Cut a 47/8square from the brown, from the white-on-white, and from a floral fabric, then cut them on the diagonal. (You will use one of each of these triangles.)

Cut two white-on-white rectangles that each measure 21/2by 41/2inches.

Sew five small brown triangles to white-on-white triangles.

ImageConnect three of the brown/white squares, then connect the other two as shown in the graphic.

Connect the large floral triangle to the large brown triangle.

Sew the piece with two connected brown/white triangles to the floral/brown square as shown.

Sew the piece with three connected brown/white triangles to the floral/brown square as shown.

Sew the remaining small brown triangles to one edge of the white-on-white rectangles as shown in the graphic.

Sew these units to the sides of the flower basket, then add the large white triangle to form the finished block.

Your completed unfinished block will measure 81/2.Eight inchesaftersewn into a quilt!

ImageJewel Tones are those that can be compared to the color of a jewel. Turquoise, Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald, Topaz, Sapphire, etc.

Cut four 37/8inch squares from a white-on-white; cut diagonally.

Cut two 37/8squares from a jewel tone; cut diagonally.

Cut two 37/8squares from a different jewel tone; cut diagonally.

Sew a white-on-white triangle to each jewel-tone triangle. Press the seam towards the jewel-tone.

Cut sixteen 2inch white-on-white squares.

Cut sixteen 2inch squares from jewel-tone fabrics; preferably four squares from each of four shades.

Sew a white-on-white square to each jewel-tone square, then sew the newly formed rectangles together with a like rectangle, as pictured, to form a square.

Connect the top two rows.

Connect the bottom two rows.

Connect the final center seam.

Scrap Star Quilt BlockThe finished block measures 11inches square.
(111/2inches unfinished).Instructions: Use good quality,100% cottonprewashedfabrics.

Use four prints per block; two in the center four-patch, one for the star, and one for the background.

Cut four 31/4inch squares from your background print.

Cut one 63/4inch square from your background print; cut diagonally both ways to form four triangles.

For the star points, cut four 35/8squares from a second print; cut in half diagonally.

For the center four-patch:Cut two 31/4inch squares from a third print.

Cut two 31/4inch squares from a fourth print.

Connect each row as shown in the above graphic.

Sew the long side of two star point triangles to the short sides of each large background triangle.

Sew the background corner squares to each side of the top and bottom rectangles, then sew the side rectangles to the four-patch.

Complete by sewing the top and bottom pieces to the center piece.

Your completed unfinished block will measure 111/2.Eleven inchesaftersewn into a quilt!

Use white-on-white fabric for the light rectangle, a contrasting color for the small triangles, and a floral print for the large pinwheel triangles.

Cut four 31/2by 61/2inch rectangles from the white-on-white.

Cut four 37/8inch squares from the contrasting fabric; cut diagonally to form triangles.

Cut one 71/4inch square from the floral fabric and cut it both ways on the diagonal to form four triangles.

Sew the long edge of the contrasting triangles to the short edges of the floral triangles. You will have four rectangles.

Block of the MonthMaple Leaf Block Quilt Block(comprised of four Maple Leaf squares.)
The finished block measures 12inches square.
(121/2inches unfinished).Instructions: Use good quality,100% cottonprewashedfabrics.

Use white for the background and a fall leaf colored print or solid for the leaf (like a maple sugar bush in full blaze in the autumn).

Cut eight 27/8by 27/8inch squares from white.

Cut eight 27/8by 27/8inch squares from colored fabric.

Cut four 21/2inch squares from white.

Cut twelve 21/2inch squares from the colored fabric.

Cut four 1inch by 4inch rectangles from the colored fabric.

Cut four 3inch squares from white; cut these on the diagonal to form triangles.

To make the stems, sew the long side of a triangle formed in step6 to each long side of the 1inch by 4inch piece. Square up to 21/2inches. Make four.

Pair up the colored and background squares for half-square triangles. There are two ways to make them --
Eithercut the squares on the diagonal to form triangles, then sew a background and a colored triangle together for a half-square triangle piece.
Orpair up the squares, mark a line from one diagonal to the other, sew1/4inch from the marked line on both sides of the line, then cut on the marked line.

Join the four quarters together with the stems in the center.

The centers should be white with a tiny/small red print. The strips should be cut from medium red and dark red.

Cut four 21/2inch squares from white fabric with some red in it.

Cut eight 21/2by 41/2inch rectangles from a medium red fabric.

Cut eight 21/2by 41/2inch rectangles from a dark red fabric.

Sew a rectangle to the center square, continue around the square in log cabin fashion -- as shown in the graphic.

Repeat three times.

Image6. After adding the fourth rectangle, finish the seam from the first rectangle.7. Join the four quarters together to form the block.

The finished block measures 8inches square.
(81/2inches unfinished).Instructions: Use good quality,100% cottonprewashedfabrics.

The colors we used were floral on a dark background and floral on a light background

seamsCut two 47/8inch squares from each of the dark and light fabric.

Place the light squares on the dark square, right sides together.

Draw a diagonal line and sew1/4inch from the line, then turn and sew1/4inch from the other side of the line. Repeat.

Cut along the lines, between the stitching, and press the seams toward the darker fabric.

Join the four quarters together to form the block, as shown in the graphic.

Your completed unfinished block will measure 81/2inches.Eight inchesaftersewn into a quilt!

Block of the MonthChristmas Cracker Quilt BlockThe finished block measures 8 inches square. (8 inches unfinished).Instructions: Use good quality,100% cottonpre-washedfabrics. The colors we used were reds and greens.

rectanglesends1. Cut one rectangle from a red fabric that measures 23/8by 61/8inches.2. Cut two rectangles from a green fabric that measures 23/8by 61/8inches.3. Cut one red and one green 47/8inch square.4. Cut each of these diagonally to form two green and two red triangles.5. Sew a green rectangle to each side of the red rectangle.6. Sew a red triangle along the long edge to the green rectangles.7. Sew the green triangles to the ends to complete the block, as shown in the graphic.

Your completed unfinished block will measure 8 inches.

Block of the MonthBug Jar Quilt BlockThe finished block measures 6 inches by 7 inches (6 inches by 7 inches unfinished). Use a small scale print with bugs or insects on it for the jar, a coordinating fabric for the jar lid, and a solid black for the background.Instructions: Use good quality,100% cottonpre-washedfabrics. Follow the instructions below for each block.

1. Cut a 4 by 6 inches rectangle from the bug print fabric.2. Cut four 1 by 1 inch squares from the black fabric.3. With the right sides together, lay one black square in the corner of the bug print fabric.4. Stich from one corner of the black square to the opposite corner. Repeat with the other 3 corners.5. Finger press the black squares toward corners of bug print fabric. Do not trim. (see graphic 1)6. Cut two 1by 6 inch rectangles from the black fabric.7. Sew the long edge of each rectangle to the long edge of the bug print fabric square created in steps 1-4. (see graphic 2)8. Cut a 1 by 3 inch rectangle from the contrasting fabric and one 1 by 3 inch rectangle from the black background fabric. Sew the long edge of each of these rectangles together.9. Cut two 2 by 2 inch rectangles from the black background fabric. Sew the short edges of each of these rectangles to either end of the rectangle created in step 7. (see graphic 3)10.Connect the two sections as shown in the illustration.Your completed unfinished block will measure 6 by 7 inches
