From e Cockpit The heat of summer has finally subsided as the pleasant temperatures of fall have been ushered in. The heat did not keep the Shell team from aending several aviaon events and spreading the word about the Shell program. The aviaon community met at two great venues recently. First, in late June the Eastern Aviaon Fuels team headed to Teterboro, New Jersey for one of three NBAA Regional Forums this year. With such a large aendance it felt almost like a full-fledged convenon. Arriving Wednesday evening, the Shell team had a chance to connect with customers and business colleagues at an event hosted by Shell FBO, Meridian Aviaon. The next day was spent vising with show aendees from all over the northeast region. The second NBAA Regional Forum was held in St. Louis, Missouri. While the parcipaon was subdued compared to Teterboro, the Shell team enjoyed vising with customers and friends from this area of the country. In addion to our other travels, we once again hosted customers at the Aviator Club in Oshkosh, Wisconsin during EAA AirVenture 2015. The Aviator Club is the perfect venue for taking in the sights and sounds of the airshow. Friday night of the event, we hosted a customer appreciaon dinner. We were excited to have aviaon luminaries Bob Hoover, Sean Tucker, Bud Anderson, and the enre Aeroshell Aerobac Team join us for a “fire-side chat” to discuss their experiences as aviaon professionals. Everyone in aendance was thoroughly entertained as each aviator recounted tales from flying behind enemy lines in World War II to formaon flying in the air shows of today. At EAF we have reached two significant milestones this year. The first is that we are happy to announce our 40th year in business. The second is that the Shell Aviaon network now numbers over 500 FBOs. Neither of which could have been accomplished without two crical elements: super-talented employees and loyal customers. Arriving Wednesday evening, the Shell team had a chance to connect with customers and business colleagues at an event hosted by Shell FBO, Meridian Aviation. Shell Contract Fuel News

S INCE THE BEGINNING OF FL IGHT...SHELL IS FLY ING

To learn more about the Shell Contract Fuel program please email: [email protected] or call 252-633-0066

We are pleased to announce that Shell Contract Fuel is now compatible with FuelerLinx.

FuelerLinx is an aviation fuel management software system and jet fuel marketplace. The program optimizes flight operations, automates the fuel purchasing process, and reduces operating costs in one easy to manage interface.

FuelerLinx gives dispatchers and pilots the tools they need to implement cost-saving measures quickly and effectively by comparing all possible fuel prices across all locations.

For our Shell Contract Fuel customers who use FuelerLinx, they can now view our pricing without having to upload the weekly price file. This automatic price push will not only offer our current customers ease of use, but also will make the Shell Contract Fuel program visible to the network of flight departments that FuelerLinx works with. This will ultimately result in increased applicants and

increased contract fuel sales for our participating FBOs.

Our goal is to have all of our branded FBOs participating in the Shell Contract fuel network. If you are interested in becoming a participating merchant, please reach out to Tracy Daniels with our Shell Contract Fuel team. She can be reached at 252.633.0066 or [email protected].

Filter Accessory MaintenanceCourtesy of the Aviation Fuel: Quality Control Procedures 4th Edition

The proper operation of the accessory equipment on a filter vessel is a key factor in obtaining reliable performance from a filter. Among these accessories are differential pressure gages, sump floats and probes, shutoff valves, air eliminators, pressure relief valves, drain and sample valves, sump heaters and sight gauge glasses.

Accessory Maintenance

1. Differential Pressure Gaugea. Periodically check that gage lines and valves are not air-bound,

plugged, or restricted. b. Some direct reading gages have small filters in their inlets.

They must be clean to ensure proper gage operation and avoid sluggish response. Replace as necessary.

c. Where three way valves are used, be sure that the variouspositions are correctly marked and verify that the valve handle shows the correct valve position.

d. Periodically, or if the gauge readings are suspect, remove thegauge and test it against a known reference; replace or repair as required.

e. If a piston-type direct reading gauge shows evidence of internalcontamination or sluggish operation, the gauge should be disassembled and cleaned. Be sure that the manufacturer’s repair instructions are followed.

2. Sump Float or ProbeA float or probe is installed in the sump of the vessel to detect a

buildup of water in the sump. At a predetermined water level, the float/probe will actuate (close) the flow control (slug) valve and /or shutdown the flow.

3. Flow Control (Slug) ValveThe flow control valve at the outlet of the filter vessel will

automatically shut down the system if the float/probe signals that an excessive amount of water has accumulated in the sump.

4. Air EliminatorThe ability to remove air can be checked when a filter vessel is

being filled after maintenance, or in some cases when the pump is first started up, by noting that air is being expelled from the air eliminator outlet piping. Only a relatively small amount of liquid should be expelled

with the air and there should be no leakage of liquid after the air is out. Where the air eliminator is piped to a closed system, a sight gage should be installed in the line to determine whether liquid product is leaking through the air eliminator.

The air eliminator could also be removed, the unit inspected, and the float action checked according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

CAUTION It is recommended that a check valve be installed on the outlet side of the eliminator to prevent air from

re-entering the vessel. When the vessel is opened, note whether a stain ring or soot shows on the internal upper wall or top

cover. This could indicate the air eliminator is not working properly. Air is being trapped in the vessel or bleeding back through the air eliminator and its outlet check valve if the vessel happens to be the high point in the system. Air trapped in the vessel can lead to an explosion if sufficient static charge is generated to cause an internal spark.

5. Pressure Relief ValveThe valve should be removed periodically and tested to see that it operates at the set pressure.

CAUTION The set pressure must never be higher than the filter’s design or maximum working pressure.

6. Drain and Sample ValvesThese valves should be repaired or replaced when leakage or operation difficulty is noted. The use of

ball valves is desirable, since they permit rapid opening to full flow, rapid closing, and have less tendency to trap rust and dirt.

7. Sump HeatersIn areas where the temperature goes below freezing, electrical jacketing or immersion heaters maybe

necessary to prevent water from freezing in the sump and water drain off lines. Heaters should be activated and checked according to the manufacturer’s instructions prior to the onset of cold weather, and periodically during the winter.

CAUTION Prior to vessel being taken out of service for maintenance, be sure to turn off and lock out electrical

power.

8. Sight GlassesSight glasses are sometimes installed on filters to show when water is building up in the bottom of the

vessel. They must be periodically flushed or disassembled to clean the glass so that the water/fuel interface can be readily seen.
