Cassina works industrially in the contemporary furnishing sector. It produces chairs, tables, armchairs, beds, and furniture in general with a particular flair for upholstered items and work in wood, leather and other top-quality materials.The Cassina collection is eclectic, and has always been so. It is open to design projects from varying cultures and historical backgrounds, it welcomes them and makes them its own, stamping them with its own personality, its own trademark. A Cassina product is the fruit of different competences and professionalism, from which spring results that are always original and exclusive. Products from the Cassina collection hark back to different inspirations, sometimes even contradictory. But a common feature is revealed; the courage to seek quality across different types and languages, quality that has made the Cassina product a point of reference for the international culture of design.To produce its furniture, Cassina has entrusted the intelligence, the hopes, the genius of the most famous architects and designers of the 20th century; it is a courage and a challenge from which excellent results have derived; each designer called upon to collaborate with Cassina has been able to create a special relationship with the firm and its research and production mechanisms. The mid 60s saw Cassina exhibiting - alongside the pieces of the contemporary design collection - the “Cassina I Maestri” collection which includes some of the most important furniture created by leading figures in the Modern Movement, pieces which have since become landmarks in the culture of Italian and international design.

The “Cassina I Maestri” collection includes some of the most important furniture created by leading figures in the Modern Movement, pieces which have since become landmarks in the evolution of contemporary design.It all began in 1965 with the reconstruction of furniture designed by Le Corbusier-Pierre Jeanneret-Charlotte Perriand, to be followed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Erik Gunnar Asplund and Charlotte Perriand.The collection is enriched in 2008 with furniture designed by Franco Albini and, as it is an open-ended venture, it means that the collection may well expand in the future to take in other important names in the history of design.The “Cassina I Maestri” collection has made it possible to retrieve the elemental values from

which contemporary furnishing design stems and to make available faithful reconstructions which keep their Master’s messages of innovation and novelty intact.The exclusive reproduction rights have been acquired by Cassina: for Le Corbusier in 1964, for Rietveld in 1971, for Mackintosh in 1972, for Asplund in 1981, for Charlotte Perriand in 2004 and for Franco Albini in 2007.The “Cassina I Maestri” collection fosters the emergence of those absolute values of design which transcend space and time, the content of which has never been explored hitherto, thus constituting a fundamental contribution to current design research.These pieces fit into contemporary furnishing schemes with the utmost naturalness, blending in as effortlessly as furniture designed this year.

Charles R. MackintoshCharles Rennie Mackintosh, the Scottish architect with the deep set eyes, was the leading light of the Glasgow School at the turn of the last century. Mackintosh took his inspiration from Scottish traditions and blended them with the flourish of Art Nouveau and the simplicity of Japanese forms. The University of Glasgow, the sole trustee of Mackintosh’s artistic production, has granted Cassina exclusive use of this heritage through a world license for the production of Mackintosh furniture.

E. Gunnar AsplundBorn in Stockholm Erik Gunnar Asplund plays a central role in the development of Scandinavian architecture and design of twentieth century. His work has influenced architects and designers such as Alvar Aalto, Erik Bryggman, Arne Jacobsen, Jørn Utzon.He graduated in 1909 and journeyed in Europe and USA. The works of years 1911-1930 are permeated by neo-classical language, the so called “modern classicism”, based upon a free integration between classic and vernacular themes. 1930 is the year of the Stockholm Exhibition, the year of his transition from a highly personal, free and eclectic experience to the Modern Movement, personally interpreted.

Franco AlbiniFranco Albini, born in Robbiate (Como) in 1905, was a major figure in the Rationalist Movement, excelling in architectural, furniture, industrial and museum design. After receiving a degree in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1929, he worked with the Ponti and Lancia design studios and for the magazine Casabella. He set up his own practice in Milan in 1931. During the 1940’s, Albini expanded his collaboration with Cassina, which started with chair designs. Franco Albini was the recipient of many honors in recognition of the importance of his cultural contributions.

Le Corbusier In 1929, Le Corbusier presented some radical furniture concepts at the Salon d’Automne in Paris. The revolutionary designs, by Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret, won recognition and are today some of the most famous furniture in the world. Its clear and essential form is highly adaptable to change in time and in environment, constantly providing new significance. Cassina entered into an exclusive manufacturing agreement in 1964, while Le Corbusier was still alive. The Fondation Le Corbusier and the co-authors have given only Cassina the right to produce and distribute these furniture designs.

Charlotte PerriandCharlotte Perriand so impressed Le Corbusier with her installation “Bar sous le toit” that he began a long term collaboration with her. It was she who prototyped the furniture famously shown at the 1929 Salone d’Automne in Paris, from Le Corbusier’s sketches, provoking a chain reaction of design that is still flourishing. Perriand spent years living and working in the far east, developing the unique viewpoint and style that established her reputation as a progressive and socially responsible architect. She worked with Cassina after Le Corbusier’s death to protect and expand his legacy, and to develop her own collection.

Gerrit T. RietveldGerrit Thomas Rietveld was a young rationalist architect in his thirties, active and committed, when he joined the De Stijl movement in 1918. The movement tended to translate and compose in ideology the theme of dynamic breakdown and decomposition that had already been expressed in cubist painting. When Cassina wished to have some of Rietveld’s work in its historical catalogue, the Rietveld family lent its support and, in 1972, Cassina was granted exclusive worldwide rights to produce and market furniture and other objects designed by G. T. Rietveld.

After in depth research, Cassina enters the outdoor furnishings market with its new Outdoor Collection. This innovative interpretation of some of the most important designs by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, further enriches the Le Corbusier and Perriand “Cassina I Maestri” Collection.The materials and construction techniques employed aim to provide maximum water, humidity and heat resistance in the extreme conditions of open-air use:

iron-based alloy, which combines corrosion resistance with the typical mechanical properties of steels. The internal part of the structures is TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welded, while the visible part is welded with silver and this inevitably

creates the slight yellow halos typical of this type of process. The steel is then polished to obtain an effect similar to chrome plating;

padding comes in natural organic fibre;

for cushions, designed for extreme use, with excellent color fastness over time, and optimum resistance to UV and grease. Easy to maintain, they are best cleaned with cloth and water, a neutral mild soap, and gentle brushing.Like all pieces in the “Cassina I Maestri” collection, the outdoor models also bear the company brand and production number. The Cassina logo is stamped on the structure of the LC3 Outdoor model, while all other Outdoor models carry a cloth label.

Armchair and two seater sofa with one-piece seat cushion. The structure is made entirely from polished AISI 304 stainless steel; silver welding. The cushions are placed on a stretched polyester yarn net at the base and are developed to withstand all weather conditions. The cushion insert in water-draining polyurethane avoids stagnation mold and unpleasant odors. The padding is ECOFILL, a hollow fiber that is totally natural, organic, hypoallergenic and hydrophilic. It dries quickly when exposed to the elements due to its lightness and high air content (about 80%). ECOFILL is soft to the touch and very comfortable. It is also totally biodegradable. There are two types of fabric available, Outdoor Sunbrella Sling: a high tenacity polyester yarn coated in PVC, and Outdoor Sunbrella Plein Air: a stain-resistant acrylic yarn treated with an exclusive formulation, called Glen Raven. Both types are totally mold resistant, ISO 9001 certified, and available in 5 colors. The materials and construction techniques employed aim to provide maximum water, humidity and heat resistance in the extreme conditions of open-air use and are tested to pass sustained temperature excursions from -22°F to +158°F. A development and extension of the Mex range, Mex Cube is offered as a highly versatile system. Eloro sofa is a modern take on the refined style that is seen in Cassina’s wooden furniture. Dordoni gives the tradition form by working on an elegant ash wood frame with a distinctive leg profile. Big unstructured cushions reside within the leather support structure and wooden arms, ensuring comfort and softening the overall outline of the piece. Eloro projects a welcoming attitude with it’s rounded and angled surfaces, oblique and straight lines, testing the most advance joinery techniques developed by Cassina.

The Tre Pezzi armchair offers a very modern re-reading of the classic bergère in which the formal structure is made explicit. The three elements of the composition are displayed with exceptional clarity in a sort of exploded and accentuated view: the deep seat, the back support ring (which describes a perfect semi-circle), and the half-moon headrest. With their clean geometry, each element is perfectly distinct from the others. The graphic symbol of the frame in tubular steel, painted matt black or chrome-plated, connects the padded elements.
