FROM THE GUEST EDITORWhile the magazine took a little seasonal rest, probably like most of you that didn’t have that option, the last couple of months will have seemed like a hard slog with very little encouragement from predictions of a tougher year to come.

The big freeze doesn’t just hit road and rail, but the pockets of consumers, and a handful of high profile closures of the like of Jessops and HMV underline what those of us at the sharp end already know.

Failure to react positively to customer demand is fatal in a competitive and fast moving market. It’s not that these failed companies didn’t react to internet trade, but by too little and too late.

The most valuable resource of a high street outlet providing any on-demand service is that very interaction between customer and provider. And it’s a two-way traffic. If you’re not producing what the customer wants, it’s your problem not theirs.

Mimaki triumphs at TroPHeX 2013THiS year’S TroPHeX award for the “Most Pioneering Piece of Machinery” was

presented to Mimaki’s UK & Irish distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd, for the Mimaki UJF-3042HG, following last year’s successful release and subsequent market take-up in the last year.

The Mimaki UJF-3042HG is a multitalented and innovative A3 UV LED printer which has all the dynamic and productive features of its close relation, the Mimaki UJF-3042FX, but with the added versatility of an increased head height of 150mm, allowing printing onto an almost limitless range of products.

Mimaki’s desktop LED UV printers have pioneered their way in the personalisation and gift market with their capacity to print high quality images direct to rigid substrates and their cost-effectiveness on short to medium run lengths. Since the launch of the original model in 2010, the upgraded UJF-3042FX was released in October last year and sports additional features such as an automatic primer function and flexible ink option.

The UJF-3042HG not only provides the increased functionality of the greater head height, but is able to utilise six colour printing plus white and clear capability alongside a newly developed white ink circulation system that prevents pigment sedimentation as well as increasing the yield of white ink for more efficient consumption and reduced waste.

Receiving the award from Trophy & Engraving News Magazine’s editor, Kylie Gould, Hybrid’s Industrial Products Manager, Mike Lewis, commented “Recognition for the Mimaki UJF-3042HG as a pioneering solution from such an important industry for the product is very satisfying. We’re seeing the companies who invest in technology like this machine benefitting immensely from the revenue opportunities it can deliver.”for further information about the uJf-3042hG, or any other mimaki product, please call hybrid services ltd, on 01270 501900 or visit www.hybridservices.co.uk.

Mondi brings haute couture to the modern officeTHe launch of Mondi’s 2013 Color Copy campaign showcases haute couture made from Color Copy and offers a chance to win trips to the world’s fashion capitals

Paper manufacturer Mondi launched its new haute couture Color Copy campaign with the slogan, “Only the original makes you look so good”. Color Copy has led the way as an original on the market since its launch in 1989 as the world’s first paper specially developed for digital colour laser systems and more recently as the first CO2 neutral digital colour laser paper.

Mondi’s new campaign features six haute couture designs made from Color Copy through a collaboration with design students from the University of Art and Design in Linz together with the Hetzendorf fashion school in Vienna, Austria. From these six designs, two will be used in the Color Copy advertisements throughout 2013. The campaign kicks off with an online game (www.colorcopy.com) that will run until 30 June 2013, which features all six designs and gives participants a chance to win one of 100 iTunes vouchers and one of three trips to the world’s fashion capitals: Milan, Paris and New York.

“Our new Color Copy campaign is about making a good impression with high quality print outs, whether for an important office presentation, a photo book or marketing collateral. In short, when your printed material looks good, you look good,” explains Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, Europe and International.

The students selected various grammages from the entire Color Copy portfolio, experimenting with the potential offered by using different

weights and textures. Over the last 21 years, the Color Copy portfolio has grown to include a broad range of shades and textures with Color Copy, Color Copy style, Color Copy coated glossy, Color Copy coated silk and Color Copy indigo, an HP 3-star certified paper for HP Indigo digital presses. Using Color Copy papers as the base material for their designs, the students explored the medium’s potential and versatility by washing, ironing and using papier mache, for example, to achieve their sartorial concepts. In the end Mondi selected six final designs for a high end fashion photo shoot with renowned

photographer Mark Glassner. “Color Copy’s optimum smooth surface is key for delivering outstanding

print quality. Furthermore, the even toner adhesion, brilliant colour reproduction and natural contrasts achieved make it an ideal medium for our haute couture marketing material,” Klumpp adds.

The Color Copy advertisements for 2013 feature designs by Miriam Kohlhofer and Moritz Gottschalk. All haute couture designs created for the campaign are featured in the online game (www.colorcopy.com) and the behind the scenes video showing the making of the campaign(www.youtube.com/TheGreenrange). www.mondigroup.com/colorcopy

DigiTal Print Zone, Camberley, Surrey, has announced details of a hat-trick of post-press products purchased from and installed by Morgana Systems Ltd, Milton Keynes, the manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing. The package consists of an AutoFold Pro, AutoCreaser Pro 33, and DocuMaster Pro.

Commenting on the purchase decision, Ali Buckman, director of Digital Print Zone, said: “This investment has replaced several ageing items of finishing equipment and brought us right up to date with our post print capabilities. Digital print production has changed the way that customers want to buy printed products. Purchases are now more often made in quantities of 250 or 500 printed items, not 1000s. This is ideal for digital printing equipment, but the finishing end of production needs to be right for the job as well. Good finishing equipment is critical for a high quality job. Morgana provides good finishing equipment, and it’s British built too, so we like to think that we are

“Flying the Flag” here at Digital Print Zone.”Of the three items purchased, the DocuMaster Pro has extended the

finishing options at Digital Print Zone the most: “This unit has provided an increase in our ability to produce great saddle stitched work. The square back capability of the DocuMaster Pro solution is one example of the quality features provided by the Morgana equipment. Customers’ might not even realise that such a solution exists – therefore they can’t ask for it initially. Once they do know about the ability to produce a square back on stitched work, and once they have seen it on their publication, they want it every time, simply because it looks better. We are now retaining and winning work because we can produce such a quality finish. Digital printers with other binding solutions can’t provide anything quite like it!”for further information on digital Print Zone see www.digitalprintzone.co.uk, call them on 01276 26699, or email [email protected], www.morgana.co.uk

Favini launch Crush at Paperworld

Digital Print Zone Scores Morgana Hat-Trick

Favini, the innovative Italian specialist paper manufacturer, exhibited at Paperworld in Frankfurt last month. With over 1,800 exhibitors from 71 countries, Paperworld proved the leading event in the world, for stationery, school and office products.

Favini presented its wide offer of papers, showcasing CRUSH, the first and only range of paper made with by-products from organic products replacing as much as 15% of traditional wood pulps.

After hundreds of hours of research and fine tuning, Favini has managed to transform process residues from corn, citrus and kiwi fruits, olives, almonds, hazelnuts and coffee beans into extraordinary paper in high fashion colours inspired by nature – and each with a distinct touch created by the differences between the types of material.

CRUSH brings new life to residues from organic products that would normally be processed as fillers in animal food and fertilisers or simply dumped in landfill.

Using Favini’s unique patented capabilities these by-products are reborn as a new raw material for making high quality paper.

As well as CRUSH, Favini showed their famous brands, Twill, Twist, Softy, Bindakote, Burano, exclusive black papers and news of the latest trends in Majestic and The Tube. In particular, attention was paid to Majestic, a fabulous range of paper, with shimmering surfaces and rich vibrant colours. In addition to the classic colours, the range includes the soft reflective Satins, making the collection even more attractive with their refined satin sheen

and magically beautiful colours. They also presented the new visual book of Majestic Satins, inspired by the extraordinary computer-generated images of the Higgs boson at Cern.

The Tube, an innovative paper by Favini that is both soft and sensual to the touch, now comes in three new colours that are all the rage in the world of creative design: a sophisticated tone of “Sage”; an intriguing full-matt “Graphite”; and the warm, deep, elegant cocoa brown “Marrone”.www.favini.com

Coldest Journey for Hampshire FlagsTHe Hampshire Flag Company has provided flags and banners for The Coldest Journey project - the first ever attempt to cross the Antarctic continent during the polar winter, an expedition led by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

The Coldest Journey is attempting to raise US $10 million for Seeing is Believing, a charitable initiative that raises money to prevent and treat avoidable blindness. Expedition members and equipment sailed from the Thames to South Africa last month, and are now en route to Crown Bay in Antarctica

Graham Wilkinson, Hampshire Flag’s Managing Director said, “Our flags not only get to clock up some miles but they often help raise awareness of some great causes - and the flags and banners we donated to The Coldest Journey are no exception.”

The traverse will take place between the two seasonal equinoxes, 21 March 2013 - 21 September 2013, with the ice team travelling from Novolazarevskaya (Novo) to the Ross Sea in the Antarctic winter. During this six month period, the expedition team will have travelled 2,000 miles, mostly in complete darkness in temperatures close to minus 90 degrees.

“We wish all the team the very best for their amazing and worthwhile fundraising expedition,” said Graham.

Throughout the traverse, the expedition team on the ice and the ship will undertake a number of scientific tasks to provide unique data on glaciology, marine life, oceanography and meteorology.www.hampshireflag.co.uk

PanTone LLC, an X-Rite company — the global authority on colour and provider of professional colour standards for the design industries, has announced PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, a lively, radiant, lush green as the colour of the year for 2013.

The 2012 colour of the year, PANTONE 17-1463 Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, provided the energy boost we needed to recharge and move forward. Emerald, a vivid verdant green, enhances our sense of well being further by inspiring insight, as well as promoting balance and harmony

Most often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones, the perception of Emerald is sophisticated and luxurious. Since antiquity, this luminous, magnificent hue has been the colour of beauty and new life in many cultures and religions. Also the colour of growth, renewal a nd prosperity, no other colour conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.

“The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other colour in the spectrum,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. “As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors”

Emerald for Fashion. The prevalence of green has been steadily rising for several seasons now, especially in the fashion and couture markets, and even on the red carpet. Appropriate for every occasion, Emerald’s classic

elegance makes for striking and irresistible women’s formal, everyday wear and accessories. Emerald also makes a strong statement in men’s sportswear, knitwear and ties. Fashion designers featured in the PANTONE Fashion Colour Report Spring 2013, including Tracy Reese, Nanette

Lepore, Barbara Tfank, NAHM and Marimekko, are incorporating

Emerald into their spring collections. Balanced, yet sophisticated, Emerald enlivens all colours

in the spectrum and will continue to make a

statement beyond spring and summer into fall and

winter. Emerald for Beauty. Equally harmonious on

the cosmetic colour wheel, Emerald dramatises all eye colours as it beautifully enhances green

eyes, is compatible to blue eyes, emphasises the green undertone in hazel eyes and intensifies brown eyes to make them appear deeper. Emerald is also a perfect complement to peaches, pinks, roses, ruby reds and aubergines – offering a variety of lipstick and blush options. For those who want to sparkle and stand out, Emerald is the perfect punctuation point in nail colour because of its complementary nature.

Emerald for Interiors.Enhance your sense of well being at home by rejuvenating the interior with Emerald paint, accents and accessories. This jewel like hue will create a luxurious feel in an entryway, powder room, dining room or study, and can bring life to a living room as an accent wall. Enliven your home with bedding, pillows, bath towels and accessories in Emerald. Add a splash of colour to the kitchen and dining room areas with Emerald dinnerware, stemware and appliances.

For more than a decade, Pantone’s Colour of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design. Past colours include:

THe Printing Charity has made an increased, one-off, cold weather payment of £75 to the almost 300 people it helps annually with regular financial assistance. In response to the Met Office’s warning of cold weather across England and Wales recently, the payment was authorised by trustees and dispatched under the charity’s emergency procedures.

Stephen Gilbert, The Printing Charity’s Chief Executive, says: “Keeping the heating on is a real cause for concern for the people on low incomes we help financially. To help with soaring energy

bills, we have increased the one-off payment of £50 paid for the last three years to £75 this year. The money can be used to pay any bills, including food and heating.”

THe latest additions to Ricoh’s digital colour production system line-up are the Ricoh Pro C901 Graphics Arts + and Ricoh Pro C901S Graphics Arts +. They join Ricoh’s growing portfolio which offers commercial and corporate printers enhanced productivity, flexibility, quality and profitability. The new systems include a number of enhancements aimed at ensuring that customers remain at the forefront of the fast paced developments in the production printing industry.

Peter Williams, Ricoh’s Executive Vice President, Head of Production Printing Business Group, Ricoh Europe says, “Our launch follows the news from InfoSource that Ricoh was the best selling brand for production devices/colour presses during the first three quarters of 2012. Our new systems will ensure we continue to provide commercial and corporate printers with the leading system of choice and in turn ensure they continue to provide their clients with cost effective, short-run, fast turnaround print services.”

The Ricoh Pro C901 and Pro C901S Graphics Arts + digital presses also incorporate the new EFI E42 or E82 print servers. New features to speed up job preparation and enable more work per shift include a HyperRIP which improves performance by processing multiple job pages simultaneously, Xobjects caching to enable PDF files that include Xobjects, to print at speeds previously associated only with VDP jobs. In addition there is inline job editing, ideal for tasks such as the application of additional job options directly from the job list without opening Job Properties. There is also a Job Preset Quick Select that applies the same predefined settings used in virtual printers and hot folders to jobs in the job list.

Productivity is further addressed with an uprated duty cycle of up to 700,000 – 20% more than previously. Uptime is also improved with larger sized toner bottles that require fewer changes per shift. Depending on toner coverage they deliver on average 67,000 clicks, up from 63,000, to

reduce costs per page and improve profitability margins.

Substrates up to 350gsm are now included as a part of the standard settings on both models with the media library continually updated to reflect broader grade choices.

Ricoh’s PxP chemical toners and oil-less fusing technology ensures the systems deliver near offset results, and offer a production speed of up to 90 pages per minute for multiple paper types thanks to built in Air-Assist technology. Consistent image quality is also assured with

advanced image stabilisation, single direction development, mechanical paper registration, enhanced fusing technologies and automatic calibration adjustments.

ideal big machine features in new compact guillotine THe official distributors for IDEAL print finishing products in the UK, Duplo International, has announced the launch of the new IDEAL 4860-ET guillotine. Debuted at drupa, the machine is now available in the UK following a hot reception at Duplo’s recent London Calling Rocks event at the O2 in early November.

IDEAL has long been the market leader in the small format guillotine market and this latest model looks sure to cement that position for the foreseeable future. Despite a footprint of less than a square metre, the 4860-ET guillotine has a 475mm cutting length, is fully programmable with 99 programmes and features an IR safety curtain – a feature normally only found on much larger models.

The machine is targeted squarely at the copy shop / mid-low volume SRA3 digital printer market and is designed with short-run fast turnaround work in mind. Marc Legge, UK Marketing Manager

at Duplo explained, “At this end of the market most guillotines feature a transparent safety guard that has to be lifted and closed between each cut which can be a real drag on production. Replacing the plastic guard with an infra- red system means a typical job can completed in half the time.”

Both the blade and clamp are controlled electro-mechanically whilst the backgauge is adjustable in 1/10mm increments for high precision cutting. The 4860-ET features a patented safety system and like all IDEAL guillotines, it is designed and manufactured in Germany so users can be certain of excellent build quality and accuracy.

IDEAL guillotines are available from Duplo’s approved dealer network. for more information regarding duplo international, Please contact: marc legge, marketing manager (uK), 01932 263 905, [email protected]

drop size, the MFP easily replicates fine lines and intricate detail. In addition, the ‘hot swap’ ink tank technology enables the ink to be changed without interrupting the print job.

Operated by the SmartWorks MFP software via the large 22” intuitive touch screen, the imagePROGRAF MFP M40 is capable of batch

scanning for improved efficiency. With a built-in 250GB Hard Disk Drive, support for various file types such as PDF, JPEG and TIFF and the multiple configurations available, users can customise the

solution to their exact needs and specifications. The solution is compatible with five large format

printers from the Canon imagePROGRAF range – the iPF750, iPF815, iPF825 and the recently launched iPF760 and iPF765.www.canoneurope.com/for_work/products/large_format_printers/index.aspx

CreaZy products are pre-creased and perforated sheets which are designed to run on digital printers. When printed the SRA3 sheets convert easily in to products such as A4/A5 folders, tent cards, CD wallets and corporate gift packaging. The wide range of products available give the Creazy offering mass appeal. Ideally suited to short print runs, Creazy can be personalised for many business sectors to enhance brand awareness and self promotion.

There are two great new products available from Creazy. The first is the Printed Display Set (Product code: CSK-001). This product consists of 17 fully printed and finished Creazy products. The diverse range includes document folders, tent cards, CD wallets, packaging and the new photo box canvas. These visually appealing printed examples can be used by digital printers and print buyers to quickly and cost effectively demonstrate the extensive uses and benefits of the Creazy products to their clients.

The second new product from Creazy is the Photo Box Canvas (Product code: XPH-027). The Photo Box Canvas creates the look of a box canvas for a fraction of the cost. Once printed the SRA3 sheet simply folds and tabs in to a 285 x 199 x 24 mm photo canvas. This product has huge profit per click potential as the canvas is ideally suited to very short

runs and requires very little design time. Due to the light weight properties the canvas can be displayed easily using the integral hanging holes, or simply attached to a wall. The Creazy Photo Canvas is ideal for home décor, exhibitions and corporate displays.for more information visit www.creazy.co.uk

THe Lumejet S200 will be seen at Digital Print UK which runs from November 5th to 7th at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre.

It will be the first public appearance in this country for the new ultra-high resolution printer from the Coventry based technology innovator. Featuring its “revolutionary photonic printing technology”, the LumeJet S200 makes it possible, for the first time, to combine true photographic images with legible text and line art to create compelling output for marketing literature, photobooks and book jackets.

The Lumejet head uses an LED light display to print onto photo sensitive media rather than conventional inks making it both accurate and environmentally friendly.

“By November, LumeJet printers will have been in the market for almost nine months”, said Miles Bentley, Commercial Director, “moving from beta

sites to full production systems. Digital Print UK is an ideal showcase for them and future developments we already have in the pipeline.”

Rudi Blackett, Show Director, said “We’re seeing a growing confidence in the UK marketplace and continual demand for UK-specific print shows. The feedback we are getting is that exhibitors, both large and small, are now looking to niche events such as Digital Print UK as a key target market for sales opportunities and networking.”www.lumejet.com

THe Portucel Soporcel group, a manufacturer of UWF paper, has launched a new product in its Explorer office paper range – Explorer iLight 75g/m2. Being 5 grammes lighter, it requires fewer raw materials to produce the same number of sheets. Comparable in printing quality and runnability to other premium 80 g/m2 papers on the market, Explorer iLight is available in A4, A3 and letter size.

The extra whiteness makes for improved printing contrast and brighter colours. Made from Eucalyptus globulus fibre, this is a premium product guaranteeing better performance and less jams.

With the slogan “Enjoy outdoor living. Dare to be different!”, Explorer iLight 75g/m2 exemplifies the Explorer brand concept, associated with adventure and outdoor sports, designed with young, active and dynamic consumers in mind.

This is the sixth product in the Explorer office paper range, joining the well-established iPerformance (80g/m2), iQuality (90g/m2), iDefinition (100g/m2), iColour (110g/m2), and iCare (80g/m2 with 30% recycled fibres).

In recognition of the Explorer brand’s growing distribution base (with sales up over 15% in 2012), the Portucel Soporcel group has invested in revamping the brand’s website, at www.explorer-paper-com.

As well as including the new Explorer iLight 75g/m2, the website now features a specific separator for the brand’s printing range: Explorer Premium Pre-print and Explorer Premium Offset.

Explorer Premium Pre-print was especially designed for both stationery pre-printing on offset machines (invoices, letterheads, bank statements, fax headers, delivery notes) where later customisation by laser, inkjet printing or photocopying is a requirement and digital printing. Presenting an extra

whiteness and unique shade, it provides superb print contrast and vibrant colour reproduction.

Explorer Premium Offset is a high quality, bright white offset paper with excellent opacity, bulk and surface smoothness engineered to provide consistently high levels of press performance and superb print quality makes it the ideal choice for advertising literature, books (text and cover), brochures, calendars, diaries, manuals, leaflets, notebooks etc.

Both are available in a comprehensive range of grammages and sizes.A special highlight has also been included in the website linking to a page

dedicated to digital printing, explaining the process involved in this type of printing and the potential of the entire Explorer range in this type of application.

Original and inventive, the Explorer Digital page has already received two “Site of the Day” nominations from the CSS Design Awards and CSS Winner galleries, two platforms showcasing the best in web design from around the world.

Now more functional, attractive and informative, the revamped Explorer website can now be viewed not just from computers, but also in a mobile version for tablets and smartphones. The mobile version, already available for the office range, will soon be extended to include all areas of the site.www.portucelsoporcel.com

DSales launches Develop mono production system

DSaleS, the UK distributor for the Develop range of production print systems imaging systems, has launched the ineo1052 to meet the needs of central reprographic departments, in-plant print centres and commercial printers.

With a maximum A4 output of 6,300 impressions an hour, the ineo 1052 is an excellent choice for average monthly print volumes of between 300,000 and 500,000 printouts and peak volumes up to two million prints per month. The ineo 1052 offers high media flexibility including the option to print on paper weights from 40 to 350 gsm in single sided printing and on paper of up to 300gsm for duplex prints. Develop’s production print systems are designed to meet the print industry’s preferred bleed size for media of SRA3, allowing full size A3 documents with trim marks and A4 booklets to be trimmed to size.

The high performance RIP embedded with the new ineo 1052 delivers the kind of capabilities which help commercial printers and print providers keep up with continuous production demands and satisfy customer specifications. The controller is fitted out with the very latest Intel platform and provides advanced screening technology with a tone curve utility for customised adjustment of tone curves and screening. JDF-JMF compliance ensures full and easy integration into any working environment.

To provide high quality print output the ineo 1052 has a print resolution of

1,200 by 1,200dpi and benefits from using Develop’s HD polymerised toner with smaller, smoother, more uniform toner particles for fusing at lower temperatures and producing high quality images.

For online finishing the ineo 1052 offers a comprehensive range of modular options with combinations of folding, punching, booklet making, perfect binding and staple finishing all supported. Large capacity trolley stacking units are available for off-line finishing.

Commenting on the launch Jonathan Whitworth, Managing Director of DSales stated, “This innovative new mono production system is the result of Develop’s policy of continual product improvement based on research into customer needs. Instead of producing a ‘one size fits all’ device, the modular concept behind the ineo 1052 makes a great many configuration options possible, ensuring every order can be customised to the user’s needs. One of the system’s strengths is the wide range of inline finishing units that can be integrated to create an all round production printing solution. As a result, users can choose from a wide range of first class finishing functions. With a wide range of outstanding features and economical performance, the ineo 1052 is a sound investment for in-house print rooms, digital print shops or commercial printers.”www.dsales.eu

HaliFaX based Fresco has introduced Curvorama, using anti-curl pop-up banner material coupled with a flexible header and base units with magnetic ends, to avoid intrusive frames. This allows what looks to be a standard roller banner display, to morph into a multi-drop, curvy and gapless graphics backdrop. “A seamless picture

was always my goal”, says managing director Miles Harris “and we’ve always tried to design products for customers that ‘do more’”.

The Curvorama product evolved from evaluating traditional pop-up displays and seeing how to make them better. With a carriage weight and packed size a fraction of that of a usual pop-up, it’s easier to manoeuvre and can even be shipped as hand baggage on some aircraft. So innovative is the product that it currently has three patents.

The system uses Soyang SoFlat material printed on a Mimaki JV33, thus ensuring perfect registration and panel matching tolerance.further details on the curvorama product can be found by visiting www.curvorama.com, the street feet and other interactive kits from the fresco range are showcased at www.

roland Dg to exhibit at Packaging innovations 2013

rolanD DG has announced its participation at the upcoming Packaging Innovations exhibition being held at the NEC in Birmingham on 27th and 28th February 2013 where the wide-format digital printer manufacturer will be sharing a stand with packaging partners, ESKO, and CGS Publishing Technologies. Visitors to stand D4 in the Print Innovations section of the show, will be able to experience first-hand the versatility of Roland DG’s LEC- printer/cutter as well as the ORIS

Flex Pack // Web contract proofing solution which Roland believes will revolutionise packaging prototyping and proofing.

Roland’s LEC-540 printer/cutter will be demonstrating the ease with which visually stunning packaging prototypes can be designed and printed. Unlike traditional prototyping and proofing systems which are slow and expensive, the LEC series allows users to create realistic samples quickly and using virtually any material, including final production stock. The option to print mock-ups with white and gloss ink, and embossed effects on-demand offers real versatility to the packaging sector and gives printers and design agencies the freedom to produce creative prototypes without escalating costs.

CGS Publishing Technologies new ORIS Flex Pack // Web Solution, which includes ORIS software and Roland’s VersaCAMM VS-series of printer/cutters, was exclusively developed by CGS as an on-demand alternative to legacy

systems for packaging proofing. The package is a turnkey solution for flexible packaging proofing and mock-up production which delivers huge savings on consumables with no compromise on the quality of the final product. Roland’s VS printer/cutter will be printing a range of prototypes on various materials using white and metallic inks live on the stand.

Steve Chappell, Packaging, Proofing & Industrial Labelling Business Manager at Roland DG commented: “We are delighted to be exhibiting at Packaging Innovations again this year with CGS and ESKO. At Roland, we believe wide-format print has an increasing role to play in the packaging sector and we are proud to be the printer manufacturer pioneering this change. We’ve had a brilliant response to the versatility of our LEC and VS series of printer/cutters so far, and we look forward to introducing the benefits to a new audience in Birmingham.”

Roland will also be running an exclusive competition for visitors to the stand with a grand prize for the eventual winner. Digital Print UK unveils new website

FirST details of the Digital Print UK show have been unveiled by organiser Faversham House as a new website goes live for the inaugural cross industry event at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from 5-7 November 2013.

Digital Print UK, the new annual dedicated digital printing exhibition spanning three days at the UK’s premier exhibition venue, will be split into four focused areas — production, applications and output, wide format and digital labels — so visitors can efficiently spend their time navigating the event.

Live demonstrations that include production printing and wide format

technologies will be showcased by suppliers who are involved in the print supply chain from substrates, pre-press / media, press, post press, mailing and distribution.

Digital label production is becoming of increasing interest to

commercial printers as a new revenue opportunity. Faversham House says that, in addition to its general commercial print audience, it will be working with key media partners to deliver an additional footfall of converters and label printers from a variety of backgrounds such as flexographic or gravure.

Another important area will be a section for “applications and output” driven by digital printing technology. Commercial printers, brand owners and print specifiers keen on finding ways to take their business forward will have the chance to see the latest developments in digital print technology and discover how they can deliver increased return on investment.

Details of the show are now available on the up-dated website — www.digitalprintuk.net — launched to act as a valuable source of information for both exhibitors and visitors including the latest news on the new show.

Faversham House will be making a series of other announcements in the run-up to the big event that will follow on from their other show successes. These have included Sign and Digital UK, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in March.

Show director Rudi Blackett said: “The launch of our dedicated website for Digital Print UK will provide a rich source of vital information for show-goers. And, as a trusted show partner, both exhibitors and visitors in this important digital marketplace know it’s another vehicle to help us deliver another first-class event that’s not just about the latest products and software. This is a real opportunity for visitor to network, experience a mix of advice, demos and working applications of real value to their business.” digital Print uK 5-7 november, 2013, nec, Birmingham

incorporate multi-touch finger swipe control.

DeSigneD to raise productivity, they feature an intuitive control interface which will be instantly familiar to anyone who has used a smartphone, tablet PC or Windows 8 device.

Three machines are available: the 36 pages per minute (ppm) MX-3640N, the 31ppm MX-3140N and the 26ppm MX-2640N. Each features a fast, bright 10.1” colour touchscreen and can connect to the Cloud to run 3rd party applications to automate routine office tasks.

“People are busier than ever, which makes them reluctant to study instruction manuals or learn new ways of working. That’s why we made ease of use a key design priority,” said Tom Primett, Group Product Manager, Sharp UK. “We’ve combined Cloud connectivity and multi-touch finger-swipe control to deliver industry-leading capabilities whilst hiding the underlying technology.”

working how people want – Just like smartphones, the MFPs are controlled by touch. Users simply reach out to the control panel and tap, flick, slide, pinch or spread their fingers for total control of documents, features and settings.

For extra convenience, an optional web browsing kit lets people search the internet, download content and print web pages without needing to be at their desks.

Other standard specifications include Wi-Fi access, mobile wireless connectivity, a 320GB hard drive with Network Attached Storage (NAS) capability, dual USB ports and a Remote Access Control Panel for desk-side technical support.

“These MFPs have everything for the busy office and they support the way that people prefer to work,” said Tom Primett. “The result is an MFP that

has made the transition from being an end of process document creation system to an essential workflow hub and information portal.”

versatile configurations – Each model can be customised by adding various optional upgrades. These include a space saving inner finisher with electronic sorting and offset stacking, a saddle stitch finisher, a retractable data entry keyboard, a Mirroring Kit to back up the hard drive, extra security and fax functionality.

The paper supply can be expanded to hold a total of 6,600 sheets (a Large Capacity Tandem Tray adds 2,500 sheets without taking up valuable office space) and a long paper feeding tray is available for people who want to create banners.

Regardless of which options are chosen, everything can be controlled from the multi-point touchscreen. Users can work rapidly and confidently from single-page, 3D and thumbnail previews of their documents, with the ability to rotate, reorder, delete and insert pages simply by sliding their fingers around.

advanced office technology – The MX-3640N, MX-3140N and MX-2640N make it easy to share the information that’s held in hard copy documents with the people who need it most. A 100-sheet document feeder scans single sided originals at speeds of up to 50 pages per minute (or double sided at 20 per minute) directly to desktop, email, network locations and USB memory.

wHo wanTS To Be a Millionaire host, Chris

Tarrant joined Directors of Balreed and representatives of The Lord’s Taverners in Bromley to present a new wheelchair accessible minibus to Phoenix Pre-School.

The minibus was made possible thanks to fundraising efforts of staff from Balreed, a leading independent provider of print technology and managed print services. During the summer, 34 of Balreed’s staff came together and conquered the tallest mountains in England (Scafell Pike), Wales (Snowdon) and Scotland (Ben Nevis). The group’s mammoth ascent, which equalled 16 canary wharf towers in altitude, saw them battle thick fog and gusting winds of over 50mph as they encouraged and helped each other on in order to raise the £20,000 Balreed had pledged to The Lord’s Taverners children’s charity.

Former Lord’s Taverners president Tarrant is also a patron of Phoenix Pre-School, a specialist centre that caters for 70 children with physical and learning disabilities. In addition to transporting pupils to school, the new 13 seat Lord’s Taverners minibus will enable the Bromley youngsters to attend school trips that will further enhance their development.

Managing Director Robin Stanton-Gleaves helped lead his team to the top and was delighted to present the minibus to the school alongside TV legend Chris Tarrant. “Each and every colleague at Balreed contributed to us achieving our goal of raising £20,000 for the minibus and I am delighted to be here in person to hand the keys over to the Phoenix school. I’m very grateful to

everyone who sponsored Balreed and their generosity will make a major difference to the staff, parents and young people of Phoenix Pre-School”.

Head of the Phoenix Pre-School, Annabel Dixon was delighted to receive the new minibus. “The Phoenix Pre-School supports children with a wide range of severe and complex needs, who attend for a period of multi-agency assessments from both education and health services. Children from across the borough attend the Pre- School and this new minibus will make a real difference to the children and families who can access the centre, in particular those with significant physical difficulties.”

“Our current project is to raise funds to refurbish our sensory room. The room provides children with opportunities to develop their sensory awareness and communication skills and to relax in a safe, calm and supportive environment. To find out more please contact The Friends Of The Phoenix who are helping us to raise funds for this exciting project. Having SliPPeD inTo the editor’s chair while he was on a well earned rest, one of my main duties was filtering through the many daily press releases and newsletters

to find those little gems of real news, and even real facts among the many adjectives showered upon products and services related to the industry.

The next task is to make them relevant to our readership, and present them in a concise form for people who won’t have time to read through thousands of words to search for a couple of dozen that might be significant.

I suppose it’s inevitable that those employed specifically to say nice things about something will be somewhat single minded about their chosen subject in placing it centre of attention rather than putting in the perspective of the wider world. That’s just not what they are hired to do.

So pruning excessive superlatives that would make Murray Walker blush is essential, especially when they are attached to yet another machine that folds paper.

One of the things that continually surprises some people in the industry is that the publishers of QPP, nee Copy Shop News, are also a busy working print shop with a wide customer base — and that gives us a particularly sharp focus on the here and now.

The big news for the on-demand centre in the last few months has come not from the industry, but from the high street. The fall of once giant retail chains started as a trickle and now seems to be an avalanche like some row of dominoes. Comet, Jessops, HMV, the list goes on.

Each has specific circumstances, but all share a similar cause of demise — an apparent failure to evolve to a changing environment and therefore, like ancient dinosaurs, crumble into extinction.

The national pundits talk glibly on news channels about them not adapting to the internet, but it is not as simple as that. The internet is hardly an overnight sensation, it has been around for some time. What has happened is that internet based trading is able to adapt faster than one with roots in bricks and mortar, and the muscle of large buying power that gave big retail chains its advantage has been undermined.

Of course, on the internet even a small company can look like a big chain, and in reaching far more people than could ever be the footfall of a high street outlet, could easily become one.

Initially many customers were wary of buying on line through several issues — security of payment with credit card details, and certainty of delivery and quality. Perhaps that’s why the established stores thought they could depend on their real presence to keep them ahead of the opposition. But with the likes of eBay, Paypal, and the rest making it easy and assured the tide rapidly turned, and virtual trading became a normal exchange.

The final death blow to some of the high street giants was the iPhone and iPad which released internet browsing and purchasing from the constraints of the desktop computer and laptop. Now anything you wanted could literally be at your fingertips, at any time, any place.

The face of the High Street has been changed by the digital economy for a decade.

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | February 2013

Adapt and surviveMartin Christie jumps into the editor’s hot seat to scan the latest news…only to realise you may need to look at your business to serve business and keep adapting in an ever changing market.

In this column, which nominally highlights digital imaging, we have remarked on the disappearance of the mini lab film printers which once were everywhere, and even some of the surviving retail chains that had a sales booth in store have wound the service down. Once upon a time, hard copy prints were the only way images — even digital ones — could be shared. So everyone bought a digital camera, and the traditional suppliers of film and processing, like Kodak and Ilford, were the first to suffer in their core business. Now sales of digital cameras have fallen by 29% because of the cameras in smart phones people no longer need them.

But that was a slice out of a boom market that just transferred to another product. It still leaves a healthy £600 million spent on cameras alone not to mention a similar amount on accessories in the UK. Digital photography has created as much aftermarket product in software and hardware as conventional film and darkroom ever did.

While internet sales can service a good portion of cost conscious shoppers who prefer a bargain above a best buy, this still leaves a decent margin for the specialist who gives professional advice, a range of alternatives, hands on examples and also trade in terms. All the things you can’t do in cyber space.

Jessops stores always used to have a window full of quality second hand gear, traded in against new items. In the early days of digital this was soon full of good quality 35mm film cameras at a snip of real value — a great bonus for student photographers wanting to learn from the beginning. When things got tough this asset was the first to be scrapped, then came the reduction of models range, accessories choice etc.

In the final restructure, Jessops shot themselves in the tripod doing exactly what the internet needed. The new look store with no counters, few staff and a Comet (whatever happened to them?) style walk round and check the goods, meant customers could have a good look at a camera, decide whether they liked it and then pop home and get on the line to Amazon.

So faced with a shrinking, but still huge, market, and competition based on price, they did worse than nothing. They did exactly the wrong thing. My experience at Jessops in recent years was mirrored by other regular customers in comments on photographers blogs — that new staff were poorly trained, had little knowledge of what was in the shop. Older, more experienced staff seemed to have disappeared. You could put some of that down to low morale in difficult conditions, but when times are tough, if you look like you want to roll over and die, that’s exactly what will happen.

As one photographer put it. “Aside from technical competence, I really want to see a company that is hungry to please me as a consumer and keen to offer something extra on delivery, and perhaps even bail me out when I need urgent help.”

Does that have a familiar ring? That’s exactly why I have given a big chunk of this month’s column to the issue because it is so relevant to the situation we find ourselves in with on-demand printing. Sure, we can’t take second hand print as a trade in against new, and the range of accessories may be more limited, but with an open mind the opportunities are still there.

There is no point trying to compete against internet print sales

on business and greetings cards, for example, where the service is too good and the price too keen. You have to concentrate on what the boys in the clouds can’t do when the customer gets into the messy stuff and needs the service today not tomorrow. It might even be when the so-called guaranteed delivery can’t be delivered because of adverse weather conditions, as we have all just enjoyed. It’s an ill cold wind, as they say. And if you gain a customer, it’s down to you to keep them, or lose them.

The beauty of the old style Jessops, like many camera shops, was that you might go in to buy something simple, like a roll of film, but your eye would be caught, like a magpie’s, by something that twinkled, and you decided you really needed. It’s that add-on purchase that makes the real profit, and the repeat custom.

If you search the internet, you only look for what you know you want, for the moment at least.

The internet is, however, getting smarter. We already get pop up ads and recommendations based on what a machine’s intelligence thinks we might want. Facebook is well advanced on a more sophisticated — some would claim potentially sinister — user graph profile which will trawl all likes, shares and topics viewed by any registered individual.

But a linear computer logic, however sophisticated, can still not yet make the lateral jumps of intuition developed by intelligent human experience. Anyone who has spent any time at the shop counter will know that you need to anticipate what the customer really wants long before they realise it themselves. And understanding the logic of the individual, leads to further appropriate sales suggestions.

Never discount the importance of advice. There are times it is wiser in the long run to persuade against one item in preference to another even if it is less profitable in the short term. A customer dissatisfied bears a grudge that can go a long way, especially when they can now turn social networking against you. If you really upset them, they don’t need to march up and down outside your window with a placard anymore, they can campaign at a distance with the convenience of a key stroke.

By the same route you can of course turn social and business networking to your advantage and the last year has seen a veritable barrage of advice from all manner of newly converted experts. Just be aware that it can apportion praise and shame in equal measure, so use it thoughtfully.

The internet has not only created opportunities, but accelerated the potential of existing ones.

The latest buzz word, as they love their acronyms, is B2B marketing, or business to business selling, something I thought we already did, now dressed up in a fine new coat to make it sound exciting.

Ultimately the challenge is the one we have always faced — providing what the customer wants and making a profit out of it. This means running the operation efficiently, and being aware that the average customer is now armed with so much more information, even if a good portion of it may be wrong or just misguided. That’s where the expertise of qualified and helpful sales staff is even more vital.

The demise of Jessops here in Brighton has come as very good news to two independent camera retailers, which without the

baggage of a major chain, can adapt quickly to demand on the street. But nationwide the disappearance of nearly two hundred print outlets must present an opportunity to service a demand for photographic printing that is still there.

You no longer need to have a fully plumbed in chemical lab, or even a Fuji Frontera, but small, affordable dye-sublimation printers that have been around for some years can easily service a digital print shop. They have a tiny footprint, and can rattle out fully laminated 6x4 inch prints in minutes.

We have reviewed the Mitsubishi range of printers before, and highly recommended them, as they also do large, 8x12 inch printers of the same quality. These machines are clean and efficient and produce the kind of result customers expect from photographs rather than prints produced by toner or even quality inkjet.

Many print shops will already have these models or similar, but if not there is no reason to shy away from embracing photography fully under the digital imaging studio, and every reason to explore the potential in the new environment.

Conveniently, the photographic industry has its annual exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham, at the beginning of March. Focus on Imaging will have a whole range of printers, as well as cameras and all manner of gadgets and gizmos on display and for sale. And as it mixes trade and public it’s a very good guide to the demand on the street.

Definitely worth a visit, you are even more likely to see familiar faces there this year.focus on imaging runs from sunday march 3 to wednesday 6th. for more information visit: www.focus-on-imaging.co.uk

environMenTal considerations are firmly back on the agenda, with 46% of European SMBs citing energy usage as a major concern around printing according to the recent IDC White Paper, SMB Buying Considerations for Smarter Business Printing, October 2012, sponsored by OKI Europe.

The report highlights the findings of IDC’s latest SMB Hardcopy Survey, which revealed that energy consumption topped the list of environmental issues for smaller businesses. Other concerns which feature strongly include the demand for recycling programmes for hardware and consumables, the use of recycled paper and the need to reduce packaging.

“Even though cost considerations remain strong in a tough economic environment, there is no doubt that SMBs are pushing hard to print greener as they look to improve their corporate environmental performance as well as reducing costs,” says Terry Laidlaw, managing director, OKI Europe. This pressure will increase further as the European Union Energy-using Products (EuP) Directive will require all print devices sold after this

date to include an ‘auto off’ mode, designed to shut down the device when it has not been in use for a certain period of time.

“Lower energy usage also has positive financial implications for the business,” Laidlaw adds. “OKI, like many manufacturers has been working hard to reduce the environmental impact of printing and IDC in-depth interviews among IT decision makers confirm that newer products typically use 30 per cent less energy and consume 20 per cent less toner than legacy devices. The result is that investing in new equipment can pay for itself longer term as it cuts the cost of printing.”

green iT PoliCyEuropean SMBs already have ‘green’ features at the top of their list of ‘must haves’ when purchasing IT hardware, with 61% confirming that features such as duplex and reduced energy consumption form part of the corporate green IT policy. SMBs also cite cartridge recycling, employee behaviour and the reputation of brands purchased as important, confirmation that they are taking a serious and all embracing approach

to improving their environmental performance.

Space constraints in many SMB offices can also impact on the purchasing decision. “In responding to this problem, well designed A3 devices, such as the models developed by OKI, have only a marginally larger footprint than their A4 counterparts, with the result that products offering broader A3 functionality can offer a realistic upgrade path, even in environments where space is at a premium,” advises Laidlaw.

SeCUre PrinTingA 2012 IDC study of European businesses found that data protection ranked highest in a list of 10 IT-related initiatives on their agenda for the coming 12 months.

A large number of SMBs already have in place a number of different software options to help manage their print devices, including digital document capture and storage, device usage and reporting. Almost one quarter of businesses (23%) have also implemented document security software and Ids, according to IDC’s 2011 SMB Study.

Advanced security software packages ensure stringent authentication and restriction of access functionality, as well as PIN protection so that sensitive documents can only be printed when the PIN is entered or the ID card swiped. Document encryption also ensures that documents sent across the network are kept secure until they are printed.

“The issue of print security has become even more important with the increase in remote working supported by wireless printing and follow me printing,” says Laidlaw. “The growth in printer sales reflects the continuing importance of quality print delivery to maintaining business competitiveness.

“New products which benefit the environment through lower energy usage will also benefit the business through lower costs. At the same time, in order to make the most of any print investment, devices should be connected to the network, supported by usage and security software which safeguards the business from uncontrolled costs and loss of sensitive information.” The white paper is available at: www.oki.co.uk/idc-white-Paper

inTernaTional Paper has announced that its PRO-DESIGN range, International Paper’s flagship colour laser paper from its Saillat Mill, has attained Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation across the entire range.

The announcement provides a further environmental credential and endorsement of the product’s high sustainability standards and follows the introduction of an FSC certified 350gsm heavy weight paper to its PRO-DESIGN range in August last year.

The FSC accreditation covers the PRO-DESIGN grade’s full range of A4, A3, SRA3 and Xeikon Reels paper grades.

The PRO-DESIGN range already carries the EU-Ecolabel which certifies its high environmental performance.

PRO-DESIGN is produced at International Paper’s Saillat mill in France, which is one of the world’s best performing sites in terms of CO2 emissions. Since 1990, Saillat has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 78%.

The Saillat mill uses thinning from certified forests or those that are in the process of becoming certified, with its main forestry supplies located within just 150km of the mill, reducing any transport related environmental impacts such as CO2 emissions.

Saillat also recovers by-products from the furniture and framing industries

which represents 27% of its wood supply. In terms of energy efficiencies and performance, some 88% of Saillat’s energy requirements are met by the on-site production of green energy (biomass).

Commenting on the attainment of FSC accreditation for the entire PRO-DESIGN range, Mike Robertson, International Paper’s Country Manager UK stated, “We are delighted to be able to announce this certification, which addresses our customers’ requirement for FSC certified papers and adds to our product’s high environmental credentials.”

PRO-DESIGN is International Paper’s colour laser range for professional laser printing, used by graphic reproduction houses, digital printers and copy centres. Its significant features include improved high whiteness 168 CIE quality. This provides sharper contrasts for excellent reproduction, whilst other features include better sheet formation, smooth surface, optimal stiffness for jam-free runnability and ISO 9706 providing an anti-ageing guarantee.

The PRO-DESIGN range is available in the UK from The Paper Company (PaperCo) and Premier Paper and Coral8. Customers within the Republic of Ireland can also obtain the range through merchant Realt Paper, Premier Paper Ireland, Glenvalley Paper and Swiftbrook Paper.for more information and samples of Pro-desiGn, please contact mike robertson, international Paper’s uK & ireland country manager at [email protected]

Ceo Shiro Kondo has announced that Ricoh is honoured to be rated as one of Global 100 most sustainable corporations in the world for the ninth year. The news was unveiled at the Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland. It recognises companies that are best positioned to thrive in a ‘clean capitalism’ economy. Clean capitalism incorporates social, economic, ecological benefits and costs. It also indicates that organisations know the full impacts of their actions.

Mariko Azuma, General Manager of CSR Division, said, “Ricoh has been named in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations list since its inception in 2005. Such recognition is a great affirmation to Ricoh and our employees that our focus on sustainable business operations is making a real impact. In particular the awarding body recognised our achievements in three areas: First in resource management, where we continue to be committed to carbon reduction in all our activities, second in financial management where our innovative approach was highlighted and finally for employee management with an emphasis on safety and diversity.

Ricoh is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions by 87.5 per cent by 2050, compared to 2000 levels and is also helping its clients reduce their environmental impacts. Ricoh does this through its Total Green Office Solutions, which includes a range of products and services for large and small

businesses. Ricoh’s collaboration with its clients embodies the spirit of the Ricoh brand - imagine.change. - and ensures it delivers efficient, cost effective document management services which lead to better knowledge sharing, customer responsiveness and business agility.

The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World is the most extensive corporate sustainability assessment in existence, with 4000 companies evaluated and inclusion limited to a select group of the top 100 large-cap companies in the world. The prestigious recognition tops another year of accolades for Ricoh’s commitment to sustainability in its own business, and for its customers around the world.

These include being recognised by the FTSE4Good Index Series for the ninth consecutive year and the global consulting firm Deloitte rated Ricoh as one of the top global organisations ready for a ‘green and inclusive economy’. In addition in Europe, Ricoh won the Eco-Enterprise Innovation Award at the Oracle Excellence Awards for the efficient and sustainable way Ricoh has built a new IT infrastructure to support its operations in EMEA. THeMagiCToUCH, founded in 1992, and is a specialist supplier of surface transfer paper across the UK and Ireland. Based in Bedfordshire, the company sells a wide range of products including textile, hard surface, professional and water slide transfer papers.

As a print reseller, TheMagicTouch also sells A3 and A4 printers to its valued customers and provides the first line of support. The specialist paper company previously sold ‘out of the box’ printers to customers and worked with a range of print manufacturers. However, these print solutions never fully suited the requirements of specialist transfer printing as often the device would not smoothly handle the film coated paper.

wHy oKi – iT’S no MagiC TriCK Seven years ago, TheMagicTouch was introduced to OKI’s print solutions. The firm was so impressed by the printers’ ability to handle transfer paper ‘out of the box’ that it instantly chose OKI as its preferred supplier. Since then, TheMagicTouch team has never looked back, they have now partnered with OKI to design specifically equipped printers. Currently, the firm is selling the OKI A4 C610 and the A3 821 Colour LED Printers.

“Whether it’s for temporary tattoo, printing with white toner or dark colour textile transfer printing, OKI’s solutions handle the specialist paper perfectly without any professional support,” says Carl Newbury, General Manager, TheMagicTouch. “We now have 1,500 customers using OKI’s solutions and they are working with the devices to develop print transfers for everything from t-shirts to flip flops.”

TheMagicTouch has continued to work directly with OKI to ensure upgraded printers have the full technical capabilities needed to handle transfer paper. “We are always looking for new devices and OKI has supported our interest in the technical design of its products – it is a pleasure to share ideas with the expert team,” says Carl. “OKI understand that printers need to do a lot more than simply print on plain paper.”

Developing new ideas with OKI, TheMagicTouch has made the whole transfer printing process as easy as possible for the customer. The OKI print menu now contains a list of all TheMagicTouch’s transfer paper options so that any user can simply click their option and the printer will automatically adjust to work in the most efficient and effective way to handle the chosen media in addition to every day printing needs.

TheMagicTouch also found that one of the most beneficial features of the printers is that OKI toner provides the best garment wash-ability in comparison to other well known brands. In addition, OKI’s paper pass system has minimal corners, which helps users avoid any paper feed issues.

Since working with OKI, the company has seen visible sales benefits. It now sells 20-30 A4 printers and 10-20 A3 printers a month. “We have always sold printers to our customers but whereas we used to sell them simply because they worked, we can now say we are selling the ultimate solution,” says Newbury. “Our paper

works with many other brands of printer, but OKI’s devices are the only printers that we sell and offer with a five star rating.”

For TheMagicTouch, it is critical that customers have reliable printers in place that work efficiently with the specialist transfer paper. “If customers are using OKI printers we know that they will experience minimal downtime and will be working as effectively as possible,” says Newbury. “Working with high quality products that are easy to use, we also save on resource costs as the printers work so well there is often no need to support the customer.”

After receiving a consistently positive customer experience with OKI, TheMagicTouch intend to continue recommending, developing and selling OKI printers. “It has been a pleasure to work directly with OKI over the last few years, they are easy to do business with and always provide quality and reliable products,” says Newbury. “OKI really are first class print solution providers, they will certainly continue to be our brand of choice.” www.themagictouch.co.uk

Profit in some rare positive vibesBCC PoSiTive JoB FigUreS will DaMPen FearS oF a new UK reCeSSion CoMMenTing on the UK labour market statistics published 24th January by the ONS, David Kern, Chief Economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:

“Once again, unemployment is down, employment is up, and there is a modest decline in the number of economically inactive people. The new figures reinforce favourable trends that have been apparent over the past year, and raise continued questions over the accuracy of the much more pessimistic GDP figures.

“Some commentators expect the ONS to announce a negative growth figure for the fourth quarter this Friday. This will raise fears that the UK may be facing a new recession. Although it is clear that the economy has been stagnant for too long, talk of a “triple-dip” recession is unnecessarily downbeat and damages business confidence across the nation. The positive labour market figures provide a better reflection of the true state of the economy and are more consistent with the relatively robust level of business confidence shown by the BCC’s Quarterly Economic Survey.

“British businesses are able and willing to drive the recovery and create jobs at a time when the government’s deficit reduction plan will inevitably cause the public sector to shrink. We support deficit reduction, but a more effective growth strategy is needed to enable private business to create new jobs. This requires further de-regulation, more forceful measures to support export and investment, and the creation of a business bank to improve access to finance for viable firms.

Yet again he rings the bell for the driver to go when people are still getting on. A man falls under the wheels and is killed. The bloke is sent down for murder again and sent to the electric chair.

The executioner is determined to do it right this time so rigs the chair up to the electric supply for the whole of Texas. The bloke is again sat in the chair.

‘What is your final wish?’ asks the executioner.

‘Can I have that green banana in your packed lunch?’ says the condemned man.

The executioner sighs and reluctantly gives up his banana.

The bloke eats the banana all up and the executioner flips the switch.

Millions of volts course through the chair blacking out Texas. When the smoke clears the man is still sat there smiling in the chair. The executioner can’t believe it and lets the man go.

The bloke gets his job back on the buses. Once again he rings the bell whilst passengers are still getting on, this time killing three of them. He is sent to the electric chair again. The executioner rigs up all the world’s electricity to the chair, determined to get his man this time. The man sits down in the chair smiling.

‘What’s your final wish?’ asks the executioner.

‘Well’ says the man, ‘can I have that green banana out of your packed lunch.’

The executioner hands over his

banana and the man eats it all, skin included.

The executioner pulls the handle and a zillion million trillion volts go through the chair. When the smoke rises the man is still sat there alive without even a burn mark.

‘I give up’ says the executioner; ‘I don’t understand how you can still be alive after all that.’ He stroked his chin. ‘Its something to do with that green banana isn’t it?’ he asked.

‘Nahh’ said the bloke, ‘I’m just a bad conductor.

HaRe tOday…A man was driving along the highway, and saw a rabbit hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the rabbit, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of the car and was hit. The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road and got out to see what had become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit was dead.

The driver felt so awful, he began to cry. A woman driving down the highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong. “I feel terrible,” he explained. “I accidentally hit this rabbit and killed it.”

The woman told the man not to worry. She knew what to do. She went to her car trunk, and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead rabbit, and sprayed the contents of the can on to the rabbit.

Miraculously, the rabbit came to life, jumped up, waved it’s paw at the two humans and hopped down the road. 50 metres away the rabbit stopped, turned around, waved at the two again, hopped down the road another 50 metres, turned, waved and hopped another 50 metres.

The man was astonished. He couldn’t figure out what substance could be in the woman’s spray can!! He ran over to the woman and demanded, “What was in your spray can? What did you spray on that rabbit?”

The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label.

It said:“’Hair spray restores life to dead

hair. Adds permanent wave.”

R.i.p.There was a great loss recently in the entertainment world: Larry LaPrise, the Detroit native who wrote the song Hokey Kokey, died last week at 83. It was especially difficult for the family to get him in the coffin. They’d put his left leg in and....well, things just started going downhill from there.

A guy, a pig, and a dog were the survivors of a terrible shipwreck, stranded on a desert island. After some time, they got into the habit of going to the beach every evening to watch the sun go down. One particular evening, the sky was red with beautiful cirrus clouds, and the breeze was warm and gentle. What a perfect night for romance! As they sat there, the pig started looking better and better to the guy. Soon, he leaned over to the pig and put his arm around it. But, the dog became jealous, growling fiercely until the guy removed his arm. From then on, the three of them continued to enjoy the sunsets together, but there was no more cuddling. A few weeks passed by, and low and behold, there was another shipwreck. The only survivor was a beautiful, young woman.

When the young maiden was well enough, they all introduced her to their evening beach ritual. It was another beautiful evening – red sky, cirrus clouds, a warm and gentle breeze. What a perfect for a night for romance! The guy started to get ‘those feelings’ again. He fought them off as long as he could, but he finally leaned over to the young woman and whispered in her ear, ‘Would you mind taking the dog for a walk?

A man went to the doctor complaining of insomnia. The doctor gave him an exam and found nothing physically wrong with him. “Listen,” the doctor said, “if you ever expect to cure your insomnia, you need to stop taking your troubles to bed with you.”

“It’s true,” said the patient, “but my wife refuses to sleep alone.”

Blokes right to rant

I married Miss Right. I just didn’t know her first name was Always.

Marriage is a 3-ring circus: Engagement ring, wedding ring, and suffering.

The last fight was my fault. My wife asked, ‘What’s on the TV?’ I said, ‘Dust!’

In the beginning, God created earth and rested. Then God created man and rested. Then God created woman. Since then, neither God nor man has rested.

Why do men die before their wives? They want to.

What is the difference between a dog and a fox? About 5 drinks.

Do you know the punishment for bigamy? Two mothers-in-law.

Young Son: Is it true, Dad, I heard that in some parts of Africa a man doesn’t know his wife until he marries her? Dad: That happens in every country, son.

A man inserted an advert in the classifieds: ‘Wife Wanted’. Next day he received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing: ‘You can have mine.’

The most effective way to remember your wife’s birthday is to forget it once.

First guy (proudly): ‘My wife’s an angel! Second guy: ‘You’re lucky, mine’s still alive.’

How do most men define marriage? An expensive way to get laundry done for free.

Then there was a man who said, ‘I never knew what real happiness was until I got married; and then it was too late.’

A little boy asked his father, ‘Daddy, how much does it cost to get married?’ The father replied, ‘I don’t know son, I’m still paying!

Whooah!A copier saleslady decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons or prior experience. She mounts the horse unassisted and the horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady rhythmic pace, but the saleswoman begins to slip from the saddle. In terror, she grabs for the horse’s mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw her arms around the horse’s neck, but she slides down the side of the horse anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly oblivious to its slipping rider. Finally, giving up her frail grip, she leaps away from the horse to try and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot has become entangled in the stirrup and she is now at the mercy of the horse’s pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground again and again. As her head is battered against the ground, she is mere moments away from unconsciousness when...Stan the Asda manager runs out to shut the horse off.

u.s. flight frighteners

All too rarely, airline attendants make an effort to make the in-flight “safety lecture”, and their other announcements a bit more entertaining.

Here are some real examples that have been heard or reported:1. On a Continental Flight with

a very ‘senior’ flight attendant crew, the pilot said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve reached cruising altitude and will be turning down the cabin lights. This is for your comfort, and to enhance the appearance of your flight attendants.”

2. On landing the stewardess said, “There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only four ways out off this airplane.”

3. As the plane landed and was coming to a stop at Washington

National, a lone voice came over the loudspeaker: “Whoa, big fella. WHOA!”

4. After a particularly rough landing during thunderstorms in Memphis, a flight attendant on a Northwest flight announced, “Please take care when opening the overhead compartments because, after a landing like that, sure as hell everything has shifted.”

5. “In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child traveling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are traveling with more than one small child, pick your favourite.”

Printer sexA language instructor was explaining to her class that French nouns, unlike their English counterparts, are grammatically designated as masculine or feminine. Things like ‘chalk’ or ‘pencil,’ she described, would have a gender association, although in English these words were neutral. Puzzled, one student raised his hand and asked, ‘What gender is a printer?’

The teacher wasn’t certain which it was, and so divided the class into two groups and asked them to decide if a printer should be masculine or feminine. One group was comprised of the women in the class, and the other, of men. Both groups were asked to give four reasons for their recommendation.

The group of women concluded that printers should be referred to in masculine gender because: 1. In order to get their attention,

you have to turn them on. 2. They have a lot of clever software

but are still clueless. 3. They are supposed to help you

solve your problems, but half the time they ARE the problem.

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realise that, if you had waited a little longer, you could have had a better model.

The men, on the other hand, decided that printers should definitely be referred to in the feminine gender because: 1. No one but their creator

understands their internal logic. 2. The native language they use to

communicate with computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.

3. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory and repeated at random.

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your salary on accessories.

three indian squaWsThere were three Indian squaws. One slept on a deerskin, one slept on an elk skin and the third slept on a hippopotamus skin. All three became pregnant and the first two each had a baby boy. The one who slept on the hippopotamus skin had twin boys. This goes to prove that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.
