  • Manhattanville Quick Facts:• 22 Varsity Sports• Over 325 Student-Athletes• 8 Sports Added Since 2007• 25 All-Americans (21 since 1999)• Over 1,000 Service Hours Per Year• Cumulative Department GPA over 3.200

A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation.

More than 325 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2010-11 school year, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With the announcement that the department will begin sponsoring women’s golf starting in 2012-13, the program has expanded to 22 intercollegiate teams – including eight new sports that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone.

And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Four teams earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2010-11 and three Valiant squads (women’s soccer, women’s hockey and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. 13 of 21 Valiant squads earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including the eighth title in 12 seasons for the women’s hockey team and the second straight title for men’s golf. In addition, a pair of Manhattanville squads (men’s hockey and women’s hockey) spent much of the year nationally ranked while two more programs (men’s basketball and men’s golf) topped the list of teams receiving votes nationally in their respective polls over the course of the year.

On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2010-11 as well, including a pair of Freedom Conference Players of the Year and two Freedom Rookies of the Year to go with 32 combined All-Conference honorees. In the last 10 years, at least 35 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas as well.

But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well-rounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, as evidenced by the 3.20 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2011 semester and the fact that all but four Valiant teams recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. In addition, the department boasted its first CoSIDA Academic All-American in 27 years and a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-District representatives, while the department also shattered its previous best with 114 student-athletes named Academic All-Conference honorees.

Community service also continues to play a vital role in the student-athlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds of community service hours each year. In addition to active involvement with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s basketball “Pink Zone” night and the women’s hockey “Think Pink” event to promote cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2009, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive two awards. The service aspect of the Valiant student-athlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfill the college’s mission of educating students to be ethically and socially responsible leaders in a global community.

Athletic AdministrationDirector of Athletics Keith LevinthalNinth Year • Hobart ’95

Keith Levinthal begins his ninth full year as Director of Athletics at Manhattanville College in 2011-12 and continues to establish the school as a regional and national leader in athletic success, academic achievement and community involvement. The architect and head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program before stepping aside in October 2011, Levinthal will now concentrate full time on keeping Manhattanville in the local, regional and national spotlight.

Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 52

conference championships – 26 regular-season championships and 26 tournament titles – in the last eight seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 27 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year.

As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year

honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of fi rst-place fi nishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings.

Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville as a whole continued its recent string of very successful seasons in 2010-11, as 15 teams participated in conference postseason play and four squads won a conference regular-season or tournament title. The Valiant women’s soccer, women’s hockey and men’s golf teams won conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during the season, while the men’s basketball team achieved the fi rst D3Hoops.com national ranking in program history and the men’s golf team received votes in multiple national coaches polls for the fi rst time. Off the fi eld, a program-record 114 Valiant student-athletes were named to their respective conference Academic Honor Rolls as well, while the program also earned its fi rst CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American selection in 27 years and a pair of CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honorees.

In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced

volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history.

Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record fi ve teams qualifi ed

for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team.

Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst full year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason

play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to the ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2004, Levinthal also received the honor of beginning a four-year term on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee, serving as one of 13 overall members and one of just four from Division III institutions.

But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level in all areas: academically, socially and athletically.

A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included:

Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student-athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies.

Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni.

Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye.

Coaching StaffHead Coach Kevin WarnockFirst Season • Springfield ’05

Looking to return Manhattanville to a position of prominence in the competitive Mid-Atlantic Region, Kevin Warnock was named the head coach of the Valiant men’s lacrosse team in August and begins his first season with the program in 2012.

In his first season at the helm of the Manhattanville program, Warnock will also be charged with leading the team into a new conference structure, as the Middle Atlantic Conferences split into Freedom and Commonwealth Conferences before the start of the year.

Warnock has been coaching at the collegiate level for seven years since graduating from the cradle of college men’s lacrosse coaches, Springfield College, in 2005. His last position came at Bates College in the ultra-competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), where he served as the first assistant coach for three

seasons (2009-11). On the field, he served as offensive coordinator and was the team’s substitution coach and faceoff and goalie specialist. Off the field, he served as the recruiting coordinator at the highly selective academic institution and also was heavily involved in strength & conditioning activities and academic monitoring.

Prior to his time in Lewiston, Warnock was the top assistant coach at Saint Leo University in 2007-08. While in Florida with the young Division II program, the coach implemented strategies and adjustments on the offensive end and also played a role in recruiting and academic monitoring.

Warnock got his first coaching job right out of college with Western New England College in Springfield, Mass., serving as an assistant with the nationally recognized program until 2007. He was charged with the development of faceoff personnel (over 60 percent success rate each season) and wing play, while also maintaining the substitution box throughout the game. In his final season of 2007, the Golden Bears posted a 17-1 record, won the Pilgrim League championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before finishing the year ranked third in Division III.

In addition to his collegiate work, Warnock also served as director of the New England Developmental Lacrosse Elite Travel Team between 2005 and 2007, recruiting and coaching prospective scholastic-level athletes and helping them in the search for post-secondary education.

Warnock graduated from Springfield College in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in American Studies. A four-year letterwinner in the midfield with the Pride, he netted 62 goals with 15 assists for 77 points in 60 career games, played in three NCAA Tournaments and was selected to play in the 2005 NEILA East-West Game.

A native of Somers, Conn., he currently resides in Somers.

Assistant Coach Nick CoppolaFirst Season • Western New England ’08

Nick Coppola enters in his first season as an assistant coach with the Manhattanville men’s lacrosse team in 2012.

As the top assistant coach for new head coach Kevin Warnock, Coppola will assist in the day-to-day operation of the men’s lacrosse program, including on- and off-campus recruiting, fundraising and alumni affairs, and game and practice preparation and instruction.

Coppola comes to Manhattanville from Western New England University (formerly College), where he served two stints as an assistant coach at his

alma mater. During the 2011 season, he served as defensive coordinator and assisted the head coach with practice planning, recruiting, game-day preparation and scouting.

Prior to that, he was an assistant at Division I Colgate University, where he worked primarily with the face-off specialists and assisted with the defense on the field while also organizing all logistics for Raider road games.

Coppola graduated from Western New England in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

A native of Massapequa, N.Y., Coppola currently resides in Purchase.

With the exception of men’s and women’s hockey, all 22 Manhattanville varsity sports have competed under the umbrella of the Middle Atlantic Conferences since joining the conference prior to the 2007-08 school year.

Founded in 1912, the MAC is an umbrella organization of three conferences – Commonwealth, Freedom and Middle Atlantic – and sponsors 22 Division III sports among its 16 current member schools. With the split of men’s and women’s lacrosse into two separate conferences this year, all Manhattanville teams except cross country and indoor/outdoor track compete alongside seven other schools in the competitive Freedom Conference. As a result, all Valiant

programs receive the chance to compete for the conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Kevin Warnock, the 2012 Manhattanville men’s lacrosse team will look to erase recent memories of seasons past and lead the pro-gram in a new direction. The change in head coach also comes with a change in conference this season, as the Middle Atlantic Conference will now sponsor two separate leagues with the Valiants joining most other Valiant sports in the Freedom Conference.

Warnock comes to Purchase with a deco-rated lacrosse past that began with his colle-giate playing career at Springfield. After stops at Western New England College and Saint Leo University, Warnock returned to New England and took a position at Bates College for three seasons prior to taking the M’Ville position.

The program Warnock will lead this season returns several key members from last year’s squad, including the second leading scorer from last season, senior Joe Daly, who had 16 goals and five assists in 2011. Also back with 21 points is sophomore Brian D’Iorio, who had 10 goals and 11 assists. On the defensive side of the ball the Valiants return senior captain Phil Honovich, who started in all 16 games last season while collecting a team-high 51 ground balls while causing 20 turnovers.

After a season that saw the Valiants go 3-10 (1-10 MAC), Manhattanville was seleceted the finish tied for fourth with Misericordia with 10 points each. FDU-Florham was selected as the top team in the conference with all six first-place votes for 24 points.

ATTACKThe front line of Manhattanville is headlined

by four returners, who will need to play a larger part in the offense after the departure of Mike Strauss ’11. The attack will be led by D’Iorio and three other returners who all saw time in the starting lineup last season.

Junior Will Sahakian started in 14 games a season ago and contributed to the offense with 10 goals and added six assists as he fin-ished fourth on the team in points in 2011. Also returning this season are sophomores

Jeb Miller and Brendan Kuntz: Miller also reached double-figures in goals with 10 as a freshman, while Kuntz added five goals as well during his first season while getting the starting nod in seven contests.

Joining the three letterwinners are four freshmen. Tom Tarczali comes to Manhattan-ville after a successful high school career that ended last season with a Connecticut State Championship. Travis Quinones also joins the team after a high school sectional champion-ship last season. Four-year high school starters Conor Reeves and Corey Steimel will also look to break into the Manhattanville starting unit this season as well.

MIDFIELDThe midfield will also have a mixture of

veterans and youth this year, with their return-ing unit led by Daly, who brings back his team-leading 21 points back from a season ago.

Also in the midfield mix are a quartet of juniors headlined by Bill Motherway, who brings his faceoff skills in addition to his 13 points back to the unit. Motherway led the team last season in faceoffs, going 23-for-42 for a 54.8 winning percentage, and the Long Island native also tallied 11 goals and a pair of assists in 15 games last year.

Returning his third season is junior Jordan Kolb, who has seen limited action his first two years with the crimson and white. He’ll be joined by classmate Justin Figureroa, who scored one goal in his first season on the team.

Manhattanville also returns a pair of sopho-mores to the midfield unit. Mike Arena who started in 13 games of the 15 he played in last season while recording 21 ground balls. Eric Brown also comes back for his second year after recording four shots and going 29-for-79 on faceoffs as well.

Joining the Valiants for their first seasons this year are Connor Castleman, Mike Caldwell, Jack Polak, Antonio Ramos, George Scales, Garrett Namian, and Cory Balog. All the newcomers will battle for playing time this spring.

DEFENSEThe defensive line has four upperclass-

men with lacrosse experience at the collegiate level, The leader of the defense is Honovich, who has started every game over the first three seasons of his Manhattanville career. Over his three-year campaign, Honovich has posted 51 caused turnovers and collected 87 ground balls and even collected his first collegiate shot last season at Alvernia.

Juniors Drew Newgaard and Austin Daigh both saw time off the bench last season and will hope to play larger roles this season as well. Also joining the fold is junior Peter Callahan, who comes to Manhattanville after spending the past two seasons at Lynchburg College where he was a starter in all 16 games as a freshman for the Hornets and played in 15 games last season as well.

The lone freshman joining the defensive line is Nick Alfano, who comes to Purchase after playing three seasons at Marlboro High School in New Jersey and was named his

team’s defensive MVP for his efforts during his senior season.

GOALIESAfter playing every minute in goal last sea-

son for Manhattanville, junior Dom Poletto returns for his third season after posting a 3-13 record in 2011. Poletto had a .562 save per-centage while posting an 11.36 goals against average in his first full season as a starter.

Poletto will have some competition this sea-son in goal as he will be challenged by three freshmen who will look to take away the start-ing gig. Jeff Melnik, Paddy McClernon and Ray Zimlin will all vie for playing time after successful high school careers.

ScheduleThis season Manhattanville will have more

room for non-conference games than in previ-ous season due to the separation of the MAC Conference into the Freedom and Common-weatlh Conferences. The Valiants will open up the season with non-conference foe Mount Saint Vincent on February 25 on GoValiants.com Field at 1:00 p.m.

The Valiants will also play three games over spring break which begins and ends on Long Is-land. First they will take on Plattsburgh State at in Levittown, N.Y., before traveling to Delaware for a neutral site game against Wheaton. They round out the three-game trip with a trip to Huntington, N.Y., for a matchup against Mont-clair State on March 17.

The season will come to an end at home as well when they host the Monarchs of King’s College on April 28.

The playoff scenario is also different than previous seasons as three of the top six teams in the Freedom Conference will make the MAC Championship. The No. 3 seed will travel to the No. 2 seed on May 1 before the winner takes on the top seed on May 3. The winner of the Freedom Championship will take on the Com-monwealth Champion for the MAC’s automatic qualifier on May 5.
