Q1 How old are you?

My first question was answered by 19 people. The range of ages was 14-23 with a 40 year old too. This question was a useful because it meant I was able to reflect on the results knowingly that they were my suitable and planned audience age. The result were more usable and valid to my research because I can see most of my results are by young people.

I chose to make this an open answer as opposed to categorized as this is more detailed and means I don’t have to create bands of ages.

Q2 What type of music do you listen to?

The results from this question were useful. The categories showed me that people listened to pop, acoustic and hip hop most. My idea of a genre to follow is based around alternative pop which is good because this is what the majority of my respondents listen to. The results showed me that people don’t tend to listen to folk, jazz, metal, country, reggae or classic very much and this pushed me away from following them. This is because it would make presenting my outcome harder as people wouldn’t know the genre or be interested in it.

Q3 How important are these:

This question taught me that based on results: I should try and include a form of narrative in my video. I should try to use forms of special effects – for example slow-motion. My actor/actress needs to be suitable and like a ‘star’. These were the most important things flagged from my survey. However the result show that lip syncing and the opening sequence need to be professional and interesting for one to continue watching.

Q4 What do you like to gain from watching music videos?

The results from this question showed me that I must make my video entertaining. They also showed me that very few people like to gain information from music videos and a selection would search for self identity within a music video.

Q5 Is there anything you do not like to see in a music video?

I asked this question as an open one to allow people to type any result. The results showed that people did not like to see irrelevant videos to audio

and irrelevant actors. Nudity was also mentioned several times. There was also a few comments about poor miming and racism.

The answers to this question have given me good insight to what I shouldn’t include. To ensure of this I will not have any nudity and I will make my video and character as conventional as I can. Furthermore I will ensure my lip syncing is in sync with the lyrics and audio.

I asked this question to give me some examples to look at. I got 15 answers out of 24 which was sufficient. Sia was mentioned on several comments, particularly for her new song “The Greatest”. Below is a screenshot from this video.

Q9 Which locations/settings do you like to see in music videos?

This is good because I had thought about using outdoor locations with sunsets anyway which were the two highest selected options in these results.

Q10 Do you like the idea of editing within a video? - e.g. using flashing/strobe style; slow motion; cross fading; double exposure

etc.

The answers to this question suggest that I could stretch my editing techniques to be more skilled as people like this idea.
