R&B

The genre, pop, was the most popular genre meaning it has a large target audience. This supports our decision to chose a pop song for our music video as we want to gain a large audience. People across all ages chose pop as their favourite genre meaning the age demographic will be large so our music video will appeal to a wide range of people.People expected to see a story (love story), dancing, a club atmosphere and bright colours in a pop music video. In a rock video they would associate a strong focus on the band with the video. This is also true with the indie genre as they want to be able to see the artist as well as there being a narrative. People who chose R&B as the genre that they listen to would expect there to be dancing and both slow and fast paced shots in the music video.

Question 3- Do you feel it would be

a good idea to have a narrative/

storyline in our music video to

convey the meaning of the song?• All apart from one of the respondents said yes it would be a good idea to

have a narrative in our music video. A few of our respondents said:

“Yes- makes the song easier to understand”“Yes as long as there is a clear ending even if it is a “cliff-hanger”“Yes narrative linking to lyrics”“It could have a moral”

• This results means we will show a narrative through in the music video so that the audience can understand the lyrics and their meaning. As well as that we want to use symbolism and produce a “moral” as on respondent suggested through the storyline.

Question 4- We were thinking about

choosing pop as the genre for our music

video. What props and setting would you

expect to find in a music video for this

genre?• There were many props and settings suggested, for example, people from the

age bracket ‘10-15yrs’ said a storyline where someone has “lost a friend”; “bright lighting, fashionable clothing and the countryside” and “a stage with artist performing.” Respondents between 16 and 20 years said the would expect to see “a light, bright, open area”, more than one character singing”, “young people having fun/ facing problems and “illegal activities” . As well as that they suggested there would be a “crowd and dancing”. Answers from 21-30yrs included “ dancing and a narrative”. Most 31- 50 year olds said settings and props would include “ the countryside/ a studio, trendy clothes”, “ on the beach or at a music festival”. Finally someone from the 51-60yrs age bracket said they would expect to see “big wigs” in a pop music video. This has not been mentioned in the other age categories however it could link to music from the 70s and 80s.

• Due to the results, we will chose a bright setting and use high key lighting to reflect the tone of the song. We may also use a countryside side setting and the characters in our music video will also wear fashionable clothes.

Question 5- Who is you favorite artist and why?• There was a wide variety of artists suggested by the respondents of our questionnaire. The artists

chosen differed in each age range.• 51-60 years- Rose Royce, Earth, wind and fire.• 41-50 years- Simply red, Tom Jones, Bruno Mars, James Bay- they were chosen because of “their

voices”.• 21-30 years- Calvin Harris because his music is “upbeat” and The script as their songs are

“meaningful”.• 16-20 years- Ed Sheeran and Lady Gaga because they “like their sons”; Clean Bandit because they

are “different”, Example because they are “upbeat”, Mumford and sons, imagine dragons and Bastille, Taylor Swift, 5 seconds of summer because “they have good music and are hot”, James Bay and George Ezra because their songs are “meaningful” and One direction and The vamps.

• As there was a wide range of artists suggested as the respondents favorite we have chosen to use the genre, pop as it will appeal to a wide target audience. This is because we want our music video to be watched and liked by people of different ages and genders.

• YouTube was the most popular method of viewing music videos. This could reflect the younger age range that we asked as we gathered results from mostly people aged between 16 and 20 years. This is also useful as YouTube makes it easier to publish our music video and we can also reach larger audiences for free. It is also easier to promote our video because we would be able to embed YouTube videos on Facebook which is also a cost free way to market our music video.

Question 7- What are the best/ most memorable music

videos you have seen?• Taylor Swift, ‘Bad Blood’ was the most popular video as there people suggested it. This could be

because it quite new and also because there is a lot of editing and also other celebrities in the video meaning it appeals to a wide audience.

• Michael Jackson, ‘Thriller’ was also memorable. Someone said they remember it because of the “dancing”.

• Another popular music video was One direction’s ‘ Night Changes’ as the viewer feels like a participant in the music video due to the use of subjective treatment.

• Meghan Trainor’s ‘Lips are moving’ was mentioned as one respondents favorite video because it was “colourful” and “people moving”.

• Due to the video being “unique”, someone said that Sia’s “Elastic Heart” as their most memorable.

• After looking at these results we want to ensure our music video stands out as for being unique. We found that dancing was also a popular feature in music videos so we will incorporate this into our product.
