5: How did you attract/address the audience? Plot The attraction of my film is largely discussed in Q 4. The whole opening is an enigma, with the fact that we don’t know who the man is, but according to feedback we could tell that the man is the killer. The fact that the children are so young gives the shock factor which would also draw people in. Generally audiences are attracted by shocking stories. You would get a big audience range because the youngest character is nine and the oldest is 50+, although clearly the certification would prevent the under 12s watching. When I got feedback from the audience they said that they could tell that he is the killer and that ‘he is clearly has a problem in the OCD department’. Link to feedback

GenreThe genre of this film is ‘thriller’ and thrillers currently are very popular with audiences, as the box office ratings of ‘Inception’ show: worldwide grosses for it were $832 576 195. The enigma set up in the opening indicate this film is a thriller and enigmatic narratives are what the audience likes, it is a pleasure; not knowing what is going to happen next and the twist and turns of the plotline. Child murder films have a long history , starting with Fritz Lang’s ’M’ (1931), through ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ to the recent ‘The Lovely Bones’, so clearly my film could attract an audience.

Thrillers also appeal because they play with the audience’s emotions. The fact that I shot it during the day and took the photos during the day would have been unsuspected, because people feel safer in the day.

In the opening itself none of the characters actually show emotion - the children are dead which has an immediate shock value. This is underlined further by the apparent lack of emotion on the central male character’s face.

Creative editingThe use of the white dissolve between each still gives the illusion of when a camera goes off.

The title of the film was created in final cut and each letter was done as a different shot so that they kind of clicked on like a camera shot.

Quite often the special effects of films often draw people in more than the story, like avatar which had a weak storyline but ground-braking special effects. My film will be using special effects later on in the storyline in some of the murders in the manner of ’Sweeney Todd’.
