Questions Words

Nearly all question words in English start with the same two letters – WH. That's why questions with question words are also called WH-questions.

Use

We use the question words when we want to get specific or more information.

They are different than Yes/No questions.

We have the next question words.

Who…?

We use WHO when we want to ask about people.

Q: Who is that?

A: My Friend, Kim.

What…?

We use WHAT when we want to ask about things, animals and actions.

Q: What is your favorite sport?

A: It’s basketball.

Where…?

We use WHERE when we want to ask about places.

Q: Where are you from?

A: I’m from Madrid.

When…?

We use WHEN when we want to ask about time, occasion or moment.

Q: When do you relax?

A: At the weekend.

What time…?

We use WHAT TIME when we want to ask about time/hour.

Q: What time do you finish work?

A: At 5:30

Which…?

We use WHICH when we want to ask about choices or preferences.

Q: Which is your apple?

A: The red one.

Why…?

We use WHY when we want to ask about reason.

Q: Why are you late?

A: Because* I missed the bus.

*When we answer a question with WHY we always begin with BECAUSE

Whose…?

We use WHOSE when we want to ask about ownership or possession.

Q: Whose are these keys?

A: They’re mine.

How…?

We use HOW when we want to ask about the way in which something happens.

Q: How are thing at work?

A: Boring, as usual.

With HOW there are a number of other expressions that are used in questions.

We use HOW OLD when we want to ask about ages.

Q: How old are they?

A: Twenty-four

How much/many…?

We use HOW MUCH/MANY when we want to ask about number, quantity or price.

Q: How much milk do you drink?

A:I drink only one glass.

* We use MUCH with uncountable nouns and MANY with countable nouns.

How often…?

We use HOW OFTEN when we want to ask about frequency.

Q: How often does she study?

A: She studies everyday.

How far…?

We use HOW FAR when we want to ask about distance.

Q: How far is it to Madrid?

A: It’s 500 km to Madrid .

How long…?

We use HOW FAR when we want to ask about duration or length.

Q: How long is the movie?

A: The movie is 90 minutes long.
