Concept of Sustainable Development

"Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”- definition of UN World Commission on Environment and Development

My city: Kiev

Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, is the country’s largest city and an important industrial city with a population of some 2.7 million

Growing economic prosperity in recent years did not lead to the spread of the concepts of sustainable development among Kiev’s inhabitants

Lifestyle of Kiev’s inhabitants (1)

Hectic construction planning practices have led to the disappearances of many of the city’s green areas

Regulatory authorities do not pay enough attention to illegal dumping of waste and drain sewage

Highly inefficient and intense energy consumption among inhabitants due to subsidized energy resources for households

Economic development has contributed to strong growth in car ownership, with a related increase in congestion and emissions

Kiev’s inhabitants consume 2.5 times more water per head than on average among European capitals

Kiev is one of the largest producers of waste per inhabitant among European capitals – 600 kg of municipal waste (as of 2007)

Kiev was ranked last in the “waste and land use” category of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2010 European Green City Index

Lifestyle of Kiev’s inhabitants (2) 3

1 Negligence towards land use and waste • Sorting of waste is a rare practice

• High tolerance to the pollutants, as a result of a total negligence

2

Highly inefficient energy consumption • Energy intensity is more than 3 times higher than on average in Europe

• There has been a construction boom in Kiev in recent years but with no particular focus on energy efficiency

Waste of water resources • Illegal drain sewage is a common practice among SMEs and individuals

• One of the highest ratios of the water consumption per head in Europe 3

4 High congestion and carbon dioxide emissions • Rising car ownership contributed to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions

• No specific target for reducing CO2

There are many features of the Kiev inhabitants’ lifestyle that contradict with the concept of sustainable development

Key features:

7

Page 8: Question G: IE Business School Application

Lifestyle of Kiev’s inhabitants has to change dramatically in order to be in line with the concept of sustainable development

What should be improved 4

Actions needed in order to move closer towards concept of sustainable development

Decrease CO2 emissions

• Inhabitants have to increase the use of non-car transport

• Car share practice needs to be implemented

Waste and land use

• Inhabitants have to start separating food waste from hard waste and move towards

deeper waste separation

Energy efficiency

• Support and implementation of green technologies is needed on the level of communities resulting in political pressure on elected representatives

• Authorities should develop public transport network inherited from Soviet times

• If authorities are unable or unwilling to control the illegal dumping of waste, inhabitants have to do it by themselves, starting from their own behavior

• Hopefully major price increases for natural gas will encourage inhabitants to pay more attention to the energy efficiency of their dwellings

Environmental education

• Large attention has to be paid to the environmental education of the younger generation
