QUESTION 4: HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND
RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?
A variety of different media products played important roles in my understanding of how to make a successful piece of coursework. I have developed my skills over the past year using the different softwares of
Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Premiere. These skills have developed massively since I created my music magazine during AS and I feel that
this is evident in my work. Becoming more familiar with these programmes has made my work much more of a success and means that
my work looks real and professional. I have paid particular attention to certain media products and there are various reasons as to why these
have had more of an influence upon my work. The media products that I have looked at have not all had a massive influence upon my work due to their difference in theme and genre although some aspects I have
been inspired by when creating my own music video, which is what I am going to discuss in more detail throughout this evaluation.
Digital technology is used massively throughout the media industry today and my product research has shown evidence of this. It is
something that has developed very much in the past 20 years as it is now possible to create a successful and substantial piece of work using
just one single device and one programme, for example PhotoShop where I was able to create all of my ancillary work, along with my actual music video. For my product research I mainly used the YouTube website
where I was able to look up different music videos. I found a range of different genre of video on this website which I was able to watch and analyse all from the same device. I used Microsoft Word to analyse my chosen music videos, where I was able to upload photographs and add
text to discuss certain aspects of the media products.
From the help of YouTube I was able to research any song and a high quality music video would appear for me to
watch. Analysing the different music videos has allowed me to gain a greater understanding of what is expected to
be seen in a music video and the conventions which stereotypically appear within a particular genre. I have
also used Google a large amount throughout my research as this website displays a large range of information that
is helpful to me.
On Google I was able to search for album posters and digipacks that have been put together for artists using similar programmes as me. After researching these and choosing the
ones that interested me I was then able to copy them to a word document and begin to analyse them. This was helpful to me as I could pretty much find any digipack and poster I
searched for using this website and helped me to understand how to make them successful and much more professional.
As part of my market research I created a survey using the website of SurveyMonkey. Here I was able to think of my own questions that I wanted
to ask my target audience. I created 10 questions in this survey which I then uploaded to Facebook where I gained a number of responses. With the
information that I got back from my target audience I was able to take what they said into consideration when making my own music video. Link to my
survey on SurveyMonkey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SYPZH6L
To film my actual footage for my music video I used a Nikon camera. This has allowed me to become familiar with a
technology that I am not perhaps very familiar with as it has many different functions that I may not have understood before. Using this device has allowed me to make my own decisions on
a number of different things such as camera angles and the overall cinematography within my music video. Before shooting
actual footage for my video, I went out with the camera and took some test shots so make sure I knew exactly how the camera worked. I also did this to help me decide which type of setting
will be most appropriate for my music video.
I then used Adobe Premiere to edit the footage that I shot, adding
various different effects such as fades and black and white colour
palette. I have also used PhotoShop for my ancillaries where I have been able to create a CD digipack and an
album poster. Using this programme I have also been able to
do a vast amount of editing manipulating the contrast and
brightness, I have also been able to add text to my work. The same was
applied on my CD digipack and music poster.
