The Titles and Opening Features of a New Fictional Film- Question One

'In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions

of real media products?'

To begin our research for our Film Opening, we began, by looking at various film openings that related to our genre. For example, as we planned to create a 'Post-Apocalyptic' style opening; I looked at films; such as, 'I Am Legend', '28 Weeks Later' and 'The Terminator'. All of the films I explored, varied in their use of devices, typically used for this genre. For instance, different films used different techniques to illustrate their story.

As we wanted to closely replicate the Post-Apocalyptic genre in our own opening, we studied

all the elements involved in a film of this type. Post-Apocalyptic films always form a sense of

intensity, suspense and apprehension. Therefore, as a group, when we were producing our film

opening, we wanted these three elements to be evident.

In terms of challenging the genre for our film opening, in some ways, I felt we did; in other elements, I felt it was successful keeping along the lines of a stereo-

typical Post-Apocalyptic opening. For example, our opening storyline centres around a male protagonist who is the last, or so he thinks, remaining man on

earth. The reason for this is because he genetically possess something civilisation did not have. However, he is then caught by two insane humans, who are slowly dying from the virus. They take him hostage and take a sample of the

genetics from him.

We felt the idea of the two insane characters taking the protagonist hostage was an element that had rarely been touched on before in the Post-Apocalyptic

genre, therefore this was an original idea that would hopefully catch our intended (16 years and up) audience's attention. This gave our opening a new, alternative view of a Post-Apocalyptic film opening; being a refreshing storyline

for our audience to watch.

Below, are the nine key elements of my Post-Apocalyptic film opening.
