Using forms of conventions

For the title of our soap ‘THE EDGE’- we decided to take the idea of using the place in which it is based within the title as we were located in ‘Alderly Edge’. We took this idea from TOWIE.

Alderly Edge is the rich, higher class place for the north. Where as the likes of ‘Made in Chelsea’ and ‘TOWIE’ for Southern part of the country

Page 10: Question 1

When watching TOWIE we found out that they used restaurants that were high established showing wealth. As people in Essex think they are really wealthy they dress up nice and go to these restaurants.

To show realism to our soap we chose a middle class restaurant for middle class people and to make it reach the conventions we included medium shots. So we decided to use a nice restaurant as a main part as we thought it would be appropriate

Trailer To follow conventions we use various shots such as:•Over the shoulder•Long shots •Close ups •Medium shots

We used medium shots to develop both the facial expressions and the body posture of the character. Whereas the long shots enable the audience to see the mise en scene telling them where they are situated

The chosen locations are used so the demographic and target audience can relate to it, e.g. Nice restaurant and domestic locations such as bedroom and car

When the sound of the rises and fluctuates relates to both tension but also so you can hear the dialogue from characters

The use of costumes and props highlights the characters ideology and feeling with stereotypical styles. (I created a character slide on ideologies)

Storylines We included several story lines in our trailer.

This doesn’t just make our trailer meet conventions but makes it interesting and unknowable meaning you won’t know what happens next.

Page 13: Question 1

Lighting/SoundWe use natural lighting throughout the trailer

On location this creates realism as there is no change in light on from outside in which the majority is shot

We used both digetic and non-digetic sound. Digetic sound is a soundtrack and non-digetic is dialogue

The song in which we used is ‘Secrets’ by The Zutons. I find that this works well as the lyrics within the song relate to the whole storyline creating an association.

Page 14: Question 1

Similarities •Over the shoulder shots•Shows what the character in the forefront in looking at•Gives the audience a feeling as if they are there

Differences •There is dialogue between two character•No soundtrack in the background showing so unknown of emotion or storyline•‘The Edge’ consists of a long shot in it as well

Subvert•The Edge creates a mise en scene due to more in the background•We understand what is going on in The Edge

SIMALARITIES, DIFFERENCES AND SUBVERTING media in our trailer compared to other existing products

Page 15: Question 1

Other uses of camera shots in my trailer

Over the shoulder of character watching someone leave her house

There is cut when we see the character listening to someone speaking to them

I found this shot easy yet affective in my piece of work yet very conventional when looking at existing soaps

Page 16: Question 1

Differences •Hollyoaks focuses on character with blurred background •Mise en scene on The Edge shows were in restaurant due to wine glasses

Subvert •Colour is more dominant on Hollyoaks, bland colours on The Edge
