Queering Ireland Special Issue

The decision to host a conference at Saint Marys University on the topic, "Queering Ireland" was made rather quickly in 2009. My colleague Goran Stanivukovic had recently returned from a visit to University College, Dublin, and told me he felt that some of the most interesting work in the field of Queer studies was coming out of Ireland, and we decided to explore that. The success of the first conference, due in no small degree to the extraordinary professionalism and generosity of our two plenary speakers, Joseph Valente and Éibhear Walshe, led to the decision to host a conference every two years, at a different location, that would be co-organised in association with Saint Marys. The selection of

essays presented here is a small (and not necessarily representative) selection of the papers from the first conference in Halifax (September 18-19, 2009), whilst the Intersects Roundtable is drawn from the second Queering Ireland conference,

"Coming Out in Contemporary Ireland," held in Cork (July 25-26, 2011). In Cork, we had another highly successful experience, and again our plenary speakers, Emma Donoghue and Margot Gayle Backus, provided an intellectual and ethical focus around which the occasion moved. A third queering Ireland conference, "Queer Irish Diasporas," is already planned for 2013, at SUNY Buffalo.

As of July, the Queering Ireland committee consists of three members,

myself, Ed Madden and Anne Mulhall, and we would like to express our thanks to Rhona Richman Kenneally for agreeing to publish this special issue. As well as this, we would like to thank everyone involved with the conference events to

date, and, in particular, the peer- reviewers who did such a magnificent job in

helping to prepare the essays for publication. A personal note of thanks must

go to Nicole Luttrell for helping with the transcription of the roundtable. The

participants on that roundtable were extremely generous in allowing us to

reprint their presentations here. To them, much thanks.

Queering Ireland is an academic initiative, but we are also anxious to

bridge the gap between the academy and society. To that end, we invite anyone interested in the initiative to contact the Queering Ireland committee, and ask

you to spread the word within the academy and beyond. 5

En 2009, la décision d'organiser à l'Université St. Mary un colloque sur le thème Queering Ireland (« Queeriser l'Irlande ») s'est prise assez rapidement. De fait, mon collègue Goran Stanivukovic, qui revenait d'une visite au University College Dublin, m'a alors expliqué qu'à son avis, l'Irlande produisait certains des travaux les plus intéressants dans le domaine des études queer. Nous a donc résolu d'explorer plus cette hypothèse dans le cadre d'un colloque. Son succès - qui repose dans une large mesure sur le professionnalisme remarquable et la générosité extraordinaire de nos deux conférenciers de séance plénière :

Joseph Valente et Éibhear Walshe - nous a décidés à répéter l'expérience, toujours en association avec l'Université St. Mary, mais tous les deux ans et dans un lieu différent chaque fois. Les exposés reproduits dans nos pages ne forment qu'une petite sélection (qui n'est pas nécessairement représentative) des communications données au premier colloque, qui s'est déroulé les 18 et

19 septembre 2009 à Halifax. Quant à la table ronde Intersects (« Intersections »), elle a eu lieu lors du deuxième colloque de Queering Ireland, intitulé Corning Out in Contemporary Ireland (« Afficher son homosexualité en Irlande ») et tenu à Cork les 25 et 26 juillet 2011. Nous avons du reste vécu là une autre expérience extrêmement réussie. Cette fois, nos conférencières en séance plénière, Emma

Donoghue et Margot Gayle Backus, ont donné à la rencontre une orientation intellectuelle et éthique autour de laquelle se sont articulées les discussions.

Déjà prévu pour 2013, le troisième colloque de Queering Ireland , Queer Irish

Diasporas (« Diasporas irlandaises queer »), sera organisé à l'Université de l'État de New York à Buffalo.

Depuis le mois de juillet, le comité Queering Ireland se compose de trois membres : Ed Madden, Anne Mulhall et moi-même. Nous souhaitons re- mercier Rhona Richman Kenneally, qui a bien voulu publier ce numéro spécial. Par ailleurs, nous voulons exprimer notre gratitude à tous ceux et celles qui ont

participé à des activités de Queering Ireland jusqu'à présent. Nous pensons tout

particulièrement aux lecteurs critiques; en effet, ils ont magnifiquement collabo- ré à la préparation des communications en vue de leur publication. Nous aime- rions aussi adresser un mot de remerciement à Nicole Luttrell, qui a contribué à

. la transcription des échanges de la table ronde. D'ailleurs, en nous permettant de diffuser leurs présentations par l'intermédiaire de notre revue, les panélistes se sont montrés extrêmement généreux. À eux aussi, donc, mille mercis.
