What is a stabling facility?A stabling facility is a secure area where trains are parked when they are not in operation. Typically, trains return to the stabling facility at the end of service and remain until they are required again. At night, stabled trains are cleaned and prepared for the next day’s service.

Why does Queensland Rail need more stabling facilities?Additional stabling facilities are required to accommodate the introduction of 75 new trains in South East Queensland.

What hours will the facility operate? The Elimbah stabling facility will create low-level rail activity throughout the day. Most activity will occur following the afternoon peak and before the morning peak to prepare trains for the fi st morning services.

When will the facility start to stable trains? The fi st of the new trains is anticipated to be in service by the end of 2017.Queensland Rail is currently working with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Bombardier Transportation Australia to determinewhen trains will arrive at Elimbah to be stabled.

The Elimbah stabling facility has been built to accommodate eight six-car New Generation Rollingstock units. Depending on operational requirements, older trains may be stabled there on occasion.

When will train horns be used at the stabling facility? Each train will be required to sound its klaxon (horn) once upon arrival and departure at the Elimbah stabling facility. As part of the train’s safetytesting, the klaxon in both cabs (at each end of the train) will also be tested before entering service. This will be a short sounding of the horn.

What sort of noise will the facility generate? The type of activities which may be audible to people living near the Elimbah stabling facility include staff vehicles arriving and departing at the beginning and end of a shift, the trains entering and exiting thefacility (including the sounding of train klaxons), cleaning (similar to typical household/domestic cleaning activities) and the train air-conditioning units. A concrete security fence has been built alongside the facility and may help to reduce some noise.

Will the stabled trains make any noise? For workplace health and safety reasons, air-conditioning units must continue to operate while parked trains are being cleaned and prepared for the next journey. However, the new trains will have a stabling mode function that is activated when there has been no activity on the train for 60 minutes. It is anticipated that this will reduce noise compared to the noise generated by older trains at other stabling facilities.

What type of vehicle movements can be expected?Private vehicles will be used within the facility as crews arrive and depart for their shift. Vehicle movements will be limited and sound like any normal residential traffi such as a neighbour departing or returning home in a car. There will be occasional traffi from services such as rubbish collection and maintenance crews to work on the track infrastructure, buildings and utilities.

What activities will occur at the facility each day?Trains will be cleaned daily which will involve rubbish collection, surface cleaning (using standard household cleaning products) and emptying toilets as well as rectifying

Lighting

How will the facility lights be managed? The Elimbah stabling facility will feature modern directional LED lighting. This type of lighting differs significantly from high intensity discharge lamps such as pole- mounted lights used at sports grounds, where the light sourceis clearly visible. Beams can be concentrated to highlight movement areas, such as walkways, while minimising lighting in areas which are used less frequently.Unlike lights at a soccer field or stadium, for example, these LED lights produce less obtrusive glare and light spill.

How will lights be managed during periods of no activity? The Elimbah stabling facility’s LED lights will be dimmed by 50 per cent after one hour of inactivity.Lighting is also broken into three zones so that sections of the facility are lit at an operational level of 100 per cent only when required. On arrival of a train, or as movement is detected in designated areas, lighting will be activated in that zone, rather than the entire facility.

When will the

minor faults such as changing light bulbs and small component replacements inside the driver cab and passenger carriages. Minor inspections and repairs may be performed at anytime during the day. Major maintenance and cleaning activities will be undertaken at the Wulkuraka stabling facility.
