Congratulations to Region 3 quartet champion, By Request, and chorus champion, Melodeers! Further congratulations to Melodeers Chorus for raising the bar for high score, yet again, with a 759! Best of luck to By Request, River City Sound and Midwest Crossroad Chorus as they take the competition stage in Vegas as representatives of Region 3 this fall. We’ll all be cheering for you! WOW !!!!! IT’S SO EXCITING !!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT ??????

There is no other way to describe the feelings we have becoming Midwest Harmony Region 3’s new Champion

Quartet. We’re still floating around up on “Cloud 9” (and 10 and 11 and ….)! We are so honored and

humbled to represent all of you at International Competition in October. It’s already back to the grindstone,

rehearsing to improve our performance, and scheduling coaching and retreats this summer with our “Dream

Team”. We are blessed with the most amazing group of coaches. Each one brings a special gift, helping us build

on our strengths and discover parts of ourselves we never knew before. Lynda Keever, Jim Arns, Renée Porzel,

Joan Boutilier and Bonnie Fedyski - Thank you does not begin to express what we owe you for guiding us on

our journey. And the exciting part is – there’s still more to come !!!!! To our family, friends, groupies and

beloved Yahara River Chorus – we feel your love and support behind us every time we sing. Thank you all for

letting us share our love of music with the world.

WJQ rises from the "ashes"... ...after being DQ'd in the Regional Open Class Division Quartet

competition in Appleton this past May. Mooooooooo.!! (OK maybe you had to be there to understand! )

How ironic that it has been our bass's joke for the past 14 years that she hoped WJQ would either win a gold medal or get disqualified. Be careful what you wish for!

And may we offer another important piece of advice .... READ the judging book very, very carefully! :)))

Elly Palmer our lead for all 14 years has moved to Phoenix, AZ, so we had been searching for her replacement for several months when something amazing happened. A former member of the original WJQ, Sue Nuels, is rejoining the quartet.

We were actually shocked and so excited that she wanted to come back to the quartet. Guess being at competi-tion in Appleton with all her singing friends helped her to realize how much joy singing can bring to a person.

Now we have a bit of a lovely problem as three members of the quartet turned out to be "bi-sectional"! So we are not really sure what part anyone is singing.. Except for the bass. It appears that she is the "straight" member of WJQ.

Choral-Aires Chorus congratulates our sisters in harmony, the Melodeers Chorus, on an extraordinary Midwest Harmony Region 3 performance. We're proud to have you represent us as our Regional Champions at Vegas III. Congratulations, as well, to Quartet Champion By Request.

We are delighted to have the opportunity to represent Region 3 as a qualifying Wild Card chorus.

In the past few months we've been fortunate to work with wonderful coaches, including Jim Arns, Joan Boutilier and Betty Clipman. They all helped in ways too numerous to mention. .

We're excited to be singing the national anthem for several regional sports teams and, for the first time, at beautiful Arlington Park racecourse. We all look forward to a day with the ponies. Plan to join the Choral-Aires Chorus for a holiday season kick-off as we join the Chorus of DuPage for a show that combines the best of our repertoires with wonderful holiday favorites. .

Finally, the chorus is working hard on plans and promotions for our first ever golf outing, set for August 13. We're looking for golfers and sponsors to make this a fantastic event. The lucky golfer who hits a hole-in-one will win a fabulous prize!

The Danville Chapter would like to thank the entire Region for their wonderful reception to our performance at contest. The audience was very generous with their applause which was good for our minds and souls. We feel that we did our best under the circumstances. Many do not know that our director became ill and was hospitalized just before the competition. We want to thank Becky McDuffee, who had coached us a couple of times prior to contest, with offering to direct us on stage so that we would have the minimum number to compete. We did increase our points considerably from the last time we competed, so it was a good experience.

We are having an "a cappella" party with very special invitations in hopes of increasing our numbers for next year. It will be a fun Sunday afternoon with tag singing, a little history, and learning a new song for everyone. Also refreshments, since we Sweet Adelines do like to snack at a party. I will share the results in our next communique.

Congratulations to the winners. It was really fun to see almost all of the competitors. We decided that we only need to add a "0" to our numbers to be close the the Melodeers. They are a really grand and wonderful chorus. Thanks for the entertainment.

Heart of Illinois Chorus

The Heart of Illinois is back home in Peoria rested and refreshed after a great competition. We are proud of our

small chorus medals and also proud of AnaKaZants’ third place quartet medal (our members Krista Chmiel and

Anneka Carlson made up half of that quartet.) Also congratulations to the Melodeers for their record high score.

Earlier this spring we were fortunate to celebrate the birthday of Margie Hochstrasser, our oldest member. In mid

-March Margie came to a rehearsal to celebrate her 101st birthday with us. She doesn’t sing with us regularly any

more, but still definitely considers herself a member and comes to visit us multiple times a year. Refreshments,

ringing chords, and many, many cards highlighted her celebration.

We had even more excitement the following week. About 45 minutes into a regular rehearsal the tornado sirens

went off. Since nearby Washington, IL, had a severe tornado 18 months ago damaging many homes (including

member Terry Neiukirk’s), we didn’t waste any time going down to the basement of the ICC Performing Arts

Building (where we rehearse) for shelter. We started to rehearse down there, but were soon joined by the Jazz

Band, (who had been giving a concert elsewhere in the building) and their entire audience. Too many people

crammed into a hot and stuffy hall! That night several tornados did touch down in the area, but thankfully none

of us had major home damage and there was no loss of life in the area.

It is with great sadness that we must report the death of longtime Heart member, Karan Bradley. Karan was a 50

year member of Sweet Adelines, who sang in a number of quartets during our tenure in Region 5. She always sang

with a great deal of energy and put her heart and soul into the message of the song. She also had a talent for

writing alternative words (usually humorous!) to songs we already knew in four part harmony. That contributed

greatly to our Crazy Quartet festivities. In April Vickie Cox organized a lovely Celebration of Life for Karan at

which many of Karan’s friends spoke and our chorus sang several songs.

With the month of June looming on the horizon, we are now busy rehearsing our “Sing-Out”repertoire. We will

be singing several times at the Elmwood Strawberry Festival the first Saturday in June. My taste buds are already

watering anticipating that strawberry Pie!

What a wonderful time we had at the Region 3 competition in Appleton, Wisconsin. The venue was perfect. We loved performing there!

We were thrilled with your response to our Muppet set. Thank you so much for that encouragement as we head to Las Vegas in October. We felt like rock stars when people asked to have their picture taken with us; a novel experience for us. Miss Piggy, as is always her expectation, was the star of the show! We are so grateful to all of our Muppet characters for sharing their theatrical talents.

We also appreciate Jim Arns, Renee Porzel and Darlene Rogers who helped us to sharpen, polish and brighten our skills.

Our summer will be a busy one. We have a couple of guest nights, an annual outdoor performance at Joliet Bicentennial Park’s Concert on the Hill series, more coaching with Jim and Renee (how lucky we all are to have them right here in Region 3!), and two preview shows with River City Sound. We’ll be at home for the October 1 performance and in Rockford on October 9. We hope you’ll be able to join us for whichever venue is closer to you. Watch www.midwestcrossroad.org for more details when we get closer to October.

We have 14 members who have not competed at International with us before. It is such a joy to see this experience through the eyes of a “newbie”! But even for veteran members, this is going to be the most inspirational, celebrational, muppetational experience for us all. We can’t wait to get the show started!

Congratulations to the Melodeers and By Request! What a competition! All the choruses and quartets within Region 3 can be proud of their performances. The Racine Chorus is excited to hold the title of Audience Choice. We were “ Hoboes in Harmony”…friends supporting one another in song.

It was truly a night for celebration. Our own Jarmela Speta was honored for her 65 years as a Sweet Adeline. We, in the Racine Chorus, have always treasured her energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to all of us, as well as to the Sweet Adeline organization. We are grateful to have Jarmela in our lives as she continues to inspire us!

Our chorus also celebrates Hazal Tabar’s 60 years as a Sweet Adeline. She always played an important role within our chorus, wearing many hats throughout the years. At one point in time, she served as International Vice President. Hazel always said, “It’s amazing what women can do when they put their minds to it”…and, she has been a true testimony to these words. Thank you, Hazel, for your encouragement, good judgement, and vision throughout the years.

We were saddened by the recent loss of Kaye Jensen – a long-time member of the Racine Chorus, and most re-cently, the Melodeers. Kaye was truly the “Spirit of Sweet Adelines”! Kaye’s vivacious personality, quick wit and humor brought joy to all who were lucky to have her in their lives. On a personal note, upon moving to Wisconsin and discovering the Racine Chorus 25 years ago, it was Kaye and her daughters, Sue and Mary, who made me realize I was right at home. Kaye would want to be remembered by the memories that made us all smile….and they are countless!

“Road trip to Regional” was a great experience for River City Sound this past May. It is always a thrill to perform for our Region 3 family and friends. We hope that your experience on stage and in the town of Appleton was a memorable one. It felt like going home for us and it was an honor to be your competition hostesses along with Midwest Crossroad Chorus. Hearty congratulations to our champions, By Request and the Melodeers Chorus. Region 3 continues to be well represented by its talented singers.

It’s hard to believe River City Sound’s journey to Vegas is almost complete. We just shared a wonderful coaching weekend with Spritzer. In addition to getting to know them better, the quartet worked with each section to solidify our unit sound and what a sound it is! We are most definitely a new Spritzer fan club! We’re looking forward to working with two of our other favorite coaches, Renee Porzel and Carole Persinger next month at our retreat. It will be a great weekend of hard work, singing, dancing, bonding with our chorus friends and did I mention, more singing?! We are so lucky to have such caring coaches and of course, an outstanding director to guide us along this musical journey.

We are gearing up for several sing outs in our community this summer. Brat Days and River City Sound is one that we always look forward to. Our payment is entertaining our audience, a brat, a bag of chips and a drink. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

Our summer wouldn’t be complete without getting our fusil trailer on the road to sell our cream puffs. We will be at some local festivals and of course, the Walworth County Fair. Come visit us!

Have a safe, happy and healthy summer. Enjoy family and friends and the time you share together. And, of

course, SING!

What a fabulous weekend in Appleton, Wisconsin. Congratulations to the Midwest Region 3 Champions! And congrats to all the competitors – you are all winners. We are so proud to be part of this fantastic Region. As Eleanor Roosevelt said “With the new day comes New Strength and New Thoughts” and so it goes. It is a new day for Riverport Chorus - New Director, New Music, New Ideas, New Challenges … we are so excited to start on this leg of our journey. Riverport is keeping very busy this summer – several local performances, Honor Flight performance, Guest nights, coaching sessions, our annual rummage sale and of course preparing for our upcoming annual Cabaret and Diva Quest. Happy Summertime – Region 3!

We are having a “Lucky Day”! We’ve made it through the challenges of a new director search, have gone through

contest with our new director, Tessa August, and now we’re starting down a new road of building our chorus.

Not only are we continually looking for new members but we are also outstretching our arms to embrace new

ideas of fundraising, sing outs and letting Southern Wisconsin know who we are!

Prior to contest we were involved with a Women’s Resource fair featuring 60 vendors that offered all women a central, credible source for finding enrichment for their lives. We based our display on the health benefits of singing and also sang a short repertoire during the event. Spirit of the Lakes also enriched the lives of others by singing at three church services at Pell Lake Lutheran Church. Regional contest came with anxiety, excitement and nerves. For having our new director for less than 9 months (yes, kind of like having a new baby), we fearlessly came to contest and enjoyed every minute. Spirit of the Lakes Chorus would like to thank each and everyone in the Region for embracing Tessa and showing her the “ropes” of directorship. She commented how all of you were giving her words of encouragement and uplifted her experiences for a “newbie”. We had encouraged Tessa to attend the recent Directors Retreat with Dale Syverson which was just the ticket to jump start this year’s enthusiasm, craziness and a floor full of sticky notes! The excitement rolled over to the new management team as elections were held just prior to this retreat. Fundraising is always on the chorus’s mind as we fulfill our summer with a PotBelly’s fundraiser, Piggly Wiggly Brat and Hotdog sale, and a new event- Ice Cream social with singing “Music for a Sundae Afternoon” which will also feature Lake Geneva music talents from the House of Music. We hope that we will see you at one of our events. Enjoy your summer and hope you have a bunch of “Time after Time” with friends and sisters in song!

Vermillion Valley Show Chorus

It was so great to see Region 3 friends in May. We are proud to belong to such a talented region. Congratulations to all of the winners, and really everyone who ventured on to the stage in Appleton was a winner. How about that Melodeers score!? Wow! And we are especially proud of our comediennes Debbie, Charity, Kathy and Ginger, FLIP SIDE, as they brought us the lighter side of competition and won the audience choice award. They won our hearts long ago as MAIN STREET USA, and are keeping up the tradition of great comedy as well as great singing.

The chorus was able to attend a Jamboree in East Peoria and had the opportunity to be coached by Dave Calland and Jeremy Conover. It was a wonderful learning experience with new coaches.

We continue to work hard and look forward to the chance to perform in various communities throughout Central Illinois, including Chatsworth and Pontiac. The chorus has also been asked to perform at Mercy Creek, an Assisted Living facility, in Normal.

Stay cool and stay safe, and keep on singing. Those preparing for Las Vegas, the best of luck.

Westosha Lakes Chorus

Westosha Lakes Chorus has been busy as ever as the summer season gets into full swing. We

recently sang for the Antioch Women’s Club at the Antioch Country Club. Our performance was well

received..

Although the chorus didn’t compete this year many of us attended competition to cheer on our

sisters in harmony. We have big plans for next year though, and are already ramping up for a

spectacular package.

The chorus also sang for some older folks at an ice cream social at a retirement center called

Leisure Village. Doesn’t that sound like a fun place to retire?

In July, Westosha Lakes Chorus will be singing at the Taste of Antioch celebration. Come cheer us

on and sample some of Antioch’s fine cuisine.

Calling all golfers! Plans are underway for a fall golf outing at Twin Lakes Country Club. Refreshments and entertainment will follow. This will be one of Westosha’s major fund raisers. More information will be made available on our website. Hopefully we will see some of you there. After that, it will be hard work and practice on a package for the next competition. . See you all in Springfield!

Yahara River Chorus had a busy spring getting ready for contest, with several coaching sessions and our annual retreat. All that practice helped us achieve our highest score at contest and first place in Division AA. We also had a great time performing the National Anthem at the Madison Capitols hockey game. . We were very saddened by the loss of one of our longtime members, Gail Friedl, and were honored to perform at her visitation. Although we miss her dearly, we know Gail's sunny spirit will always be with us in our hearts and our songs. . We are pleased to welcome three new members this spring: · Joy Hellenberger was invited to the chorus by one of our members and had such a good time singing with us she joined our wonderful Bari section. Joy jumped in with both feet, auditioning, learning our contest numbers, and singing with us at Regional contest in May. · Kari Jordahl is another great addition to our Bari section. She heard about our chorus through a calendar item in the local newspaper. Kari came from a musical family. Her mom was a music teacher and she had an aunt in Sweet Adelines, but she hadn't been singing regularly as an adult. She's enjoying her new hobby, and pitched in right away to help with MC work for our "Sneak Peek" before contest · Linda Kelly has joined our lovely Lead section. Linda was familiar with Sweet Adelines, so she found us by looking online once her schedule had sufficient available time. She also comes from a musical family. Her mother sang with a big band, and the whole family would sing in parts on car trips. The positive energy from singing in a group and the joyful sound of the songs kept her coming back. She also stepped up to play a key MC role at our sneak peak. . We are looking forward to a busy summer season performing and learning some new songs along the way.
