1st Sunday of Lent

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The annual observance of Lent is a special season for the Church, the people of God, as we ascend to the holy mountain of Easter. It is a season that reminds us of repentance and baptism. It disposes the Catechumen, those becoming members of the Church, through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.), and also the Faithful, the baptized, to celebrate the Paschal Mystery (or the passion, death and resurrection of the Lord). During Lent, the Catechumens are led to the Sacraments of Initiation by means of the Rite of Election, the Scrutinies, and catechesis. While we the Baptized, continue to listen to the Word of God and devote our-selves to prayer and preparation through a spirit of repentance as we look forward to renewing our baptismal promises on Easter. As we enter this holy season, let us also begin to prepare as a parish community for our upcoming celebration of the 60th anniversary. I am grateful to the work of the Parish Pastoral Council for the activities lined up for the year. Please save the dates and plan to join us in giving thanks to God through prayer and fellowship for the gift of our parish community of Queen of Apostles. 60th Anniversary Opening Mass of Thanksgiving with Most Rev. Oscar Cantú, Bishop of San Jose 22 August 2020, Saturday 10:00 AM Parish Dinner Dance with the theme: Decades 24 October 2020, Saturday 7:00 PM Parish Spiritual Renewal: A Day of Recollection for Couples 6 February 2021, Saturday 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM Parish Festival 23-25 April 2021, Friday to Sunday 60th Anniversary Closing Thanksgiving Mass 20 June 2021, Sunday 11:00 AM With all these activities, manpower is needed. Therefore, I would like to ask for your help. We need volun-teers to lead and create a team that will plan, execute, and at the same time have the excitement to serve and to minister to the people of God at Queen of Apostles. If you can help and wish to volunteer, please let me know. May we enter this holy season with pious devotion and lovingly prepare to celebrate in thanksgiving and honor Mary, Queen of Apostles, in whose care we rest. To God be the glory!

Family Faith Formation Faith formation is more than just “Sunday School.” It is a life-long pro-cess. At Queen of Apostles, our Fami-ly Faith Formation ministry presents opportunities for both children and

adults to grow in knowledge and understanding of their faith. In addition to our weekly classes we offer preparation for the sacraments, encourage active partici-pation in Sunday liturgies, and provide resources to pro-mote strong Catholic families. For more information, con-tact Kristie Manning at 408-253-7560 ext. 104, or email [email protected].

School News The Morgan Autism Center’s mis-sion is to help children and adults with autism, or other developmental disabilities, and our students contin-ue to volunteer there for their com-

munity service. The fifth graders have helped at the Mor-gan Center recently. Three of our fifth-grade girls said that they helped with weeding the garden and then assist-ed in planting seeds that had started sprouting in cups. They also sat with residents and completed a ques-tion and answer sheet in order to learn more about each other. If you are interested in attending our school, then you are invited to our Mini Open House this Sunday, March 1, 2020, from 10:00am to 12:30pm.

Social Justice Corner How will this Lent draw us closer to Christ?

Today we hear of the serpent’s temptations to Adam and Eve and the devil’s temptations to Jesus. We, too, battle with our own temptations. Lent means a trusting willing-ness to put our hand in the Lord’s, to ask for courage and God’s grace to be forgiven and to forgive. Lent asks us to examine our lives and invite God to help us become our best selves so that each day, and each choice we make, draws us closer to Christ. How do we do this? Consider: Fasting from a personal pleasure (food, drink, TV, ‘screen time’) and substitute a positive action: time in prayer or spiritual reading. Do you know a person(s) who would benefit from your help? Be on the alert and go the extra mile. Attend the March 18th REBOOT evening with Chris Stefanick; participate in Friday Soup Suppers and Stations of the Cross, reach out in almsgiving to the hun-gry and homeless through CRS RICE BOWL and our Survival Sack Drive. Attending daily Mass can be a sacri-fice of your time, yet the blessings to pray with our com-munity, reflect on the Word of God and be fed by Eucha-rist will be a source of strength! Consider seeking the Sac-rament of Reconciliation and attending Adoration on Thursdays. Lastly, Google Dynamic Catholic: The Best Lent Ever 2020. So many of our parishioners have lis-tened to this wonderful daily Lenten video message of 2-3 minutes sent to your email. How will this Lent draw you closer to Christ…to responding to Him in others…to be-coming your best self? 40 days…one day at a time…with our eyes on Easter.

T-shirt Sales Queen of Apostles is celebrating it's 60th Anniversary this year! To help com-memorate the event, we have designed a 60th Anniversary T-Shirt, which is comprised of three elements. The first is a diamond, which represents the 60 years that we have been a parish. The second is two banners which call out our home parish, and pay homage to the saying we all know and love, "Never Give Up!" The final element is a golden cross with a golden crown, repre-senting the connection that we have with our school. T-shirts will be available to order on February 8th and 9th, and also on March 7th & 8th. Don't miss your opportunity to celebrate Queen of Apostles! JS T-Shirts will be provid-ing a 50% profit share with the church, so each order placed, will also be a donation to our community.
