In 2007, the Queen Amélia baths became the first in Portugal

to provide hot springs treatment services with the Integrated

Management System of Quality and the Environment,

certified in accordance with European standards

NP EN ISO 9001:2000 and NP EN ISO 14001:2004,

in a process recognised by the SGS ICS–International

Certification Services.

The scope of the certification relates to the “Provision of

Services of Hot Springs Treatment” of these renovated baths,

covering various areas – service and hospitality, hot springs

services, as well as maintenance and feedback to the guest,

which includes all of the treatments and the respective

structure, from the time the guest leaves the doctor’s office.

Im Jahr 2006 wurde das Kurbad “Rainha Dª Amélia”

zum ersten in Portugal, das über ein Angebot von

Thermalbehandlungen mit Integriertem Qualitäts- und

Umweltmanagementsystem verfügt. Die Zertifizierung erfolgte in

The advantages this certification provides to guests are the

guarantees that the treatments will be carried out according

to regulations pre-established by the organisation, such as,

for example, the temperature of the baths and their duration

as well as the compulsory processing of any eventual

complaints.

The certification also focuses on the prevention of pollution

and the management of waste from the baths, with

regulations for the separation of waste and conservation

of natural resources. In this area, the Queen Amélia has

voluntarily adopted the EMAS, Eco-Management and Audit

Scheme, regulations, which are more demanding than

the ISO 14001 standard in terms of improvement

in environmental performance, including the disclosure

of the environmental behaviour of the baths.

In order to maintain its excellence, particularly in environ-

mental terms, the Queen Amélia baths can count on the

inestimable cooperation and environmental awareness of its

guests for the preservation of its own hot springs resources

and all of the surrounding natural heritage.

die EMAS-Vorschrift, das Gemeinschaftssystem für das

Umweltmanagement und die Umweltbetriebsprüfung, freiwillig

unterzeichnet. Diese Vorschrift schließt die Verbreitung der

umweltbezogenen Leistungen des Kurbades ein und ist noch

strenger als die Norm ISO 14001, was die Forderungen einer

Verbesserung der Umweltverträglichkeit anbetrifft.

Damit die Exzellenz des Bades, insbesondere in Umweltaspekten,

erhalten bleibt, zählt das Kurbad “Balneário Rainha Dª Amélia“

zum Schutz der eigenen Thermalressourcen und des gesamten

betroffenen Naturerbes auf die unschätzbare Unterstützung und

das Umweltbewusstsein seiner Gäste.

The waters of these hot springs have properties which are unique in Europe. The slightly mineralised freshwater springs up at a temperature of 68.7ºC. It has a pH of 8.89 (at 18ºC), with a very alkaline reaction.

and rheumatoid arthritis), problems of the respiratory system

(sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, chronic pharyngitis and

chronic bronchitis) and in the areas of rehabilitation and

physical medicine (problems of the nervous system and

in the orthopaedic area).

People have lived in São Pedro do Sul town since

prehistoric times. But it was the Roman presence that

brought it fame as a hot springs resort of the first order,

becoming a spa destination for nobles and commoners

alike, which tradition has continued up to the present

day. Various constructions and reconstructions were

undertaken on the area of the Roman baths up to the

building of the present magnificent Queen Amélia baths

in 1884. This construction took the place of the former

“Hospital Real de Caldas Lafões”, built in the

16th century by order of King Manuel I.

The successive baths at the São Pedro do Sul spa resort,

the best traditions of which have been justly inherited by

the Queen Amélia, have played host to representatives

of the Portuguese monarchy for almost a millennium,

beginning with King Afonso Henriques (1169), the first

king of Portugal, up to Queen Amélia, and including King

Dinis, King João I and King Manuel I, all attracted

by the curative powers of its waters, particularly for the

treatment of rheumatism and the respiratory system,

on a pilgrimage that made the spa resort town an area

Altertum zurück. Aber erst unter den Römern gewinnt der

Ort als erstklassiges Thermalzentrum an Bedeutung und

wird zum Badeziel für den Adel und das gemeine Volk.

Dies ist es ohne Unterbrechung bis zur heutigen Zeit

geblieben. An der Stelle des römischen Bades wurde gebaut

und wiederaufgebaut bis schließlich das prächtige Gebäude

des heutigen Kurbades “Balneário Rainha Dª Amélia”,

erbaut im Jahre 1884, den Ort des ehemaligen, im

16. Jahrhundert unter dem König D. Manuel I. erbauten

“Hospital Real de Caldas Lafões” einnahm.

Sul, dessen beste Tradition das Bad “Rainha Dª Amélia”

Museum centreThe Queen Amélia baths have a magnificent museum

centre. A visit here will allow you to discover the history

of the São Pedro do Sul spa resort, exhibiting treasures

which include a profuse illustration of life at the resort

and the visits and stays of Portuguese royalty, as well

as the magnificently preserved equipment used in the baths

in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
