2. Sustainability Community Initiatives Community Encourages Girls/Women Education The village Karachi Paro is located in District Badin. People here associated with agricultural farming some of them are farmer and tenants but rest of the people in village do labors. A man named Vershi also belongs to this village he passed matriculation from Tando Muhammad Khan he wished to study further but could not continue because there is no institute located near his village. Due to distance most of the community children did not go to the school and it was impossible for the girls to get education. Vershi realized that there should be a school in village for the community children; he discussed with the village members and initiated a community self supportive school. In year 2005 PCDP adopted this school and named it as “Jeevan Joth Parkari School” which was initiated by the community self help. PCDP introduced multilingual education method in this school and provided books and teaching material here. The continue community meetings and visits scale up people’s awareness regarding importance and need of education for an individual. These community sittings have encouraged and motivate them especially regarding the girls education in the result of these meetings and motivation at 45 girls getting education in this community school, this number of girls’ enrollment is unusual than average enrollment as compare to other schools.

Vershi is employee in PCDP and working as school supervisor, so he is no more teaching in this school. But the community here took all the responsibilities for the school even making efforts for stability of the school. The school village committee is keeping check on school progress and feels responsibility school related issues. 145 boys and 45 girls are studying in this school.

Community values the PCDP support for providing books, teaching aids and capacity building and salaries of the teachers. Community is well aware that this school will be supported by PCDP for some certain time and after that community has to run the school on their own.

Besides PCDP conducted a survey for village adult literacy project; while survey the adult married girls and women express that due to cultural barriers and no access to educational institutes they never had chance for schooling but as they see young girls going school getting education and progressing they desire to be literate. Keeping in view the survey analysis PCDP started adult literacy centers for men and women. The adult literacy course duration is of six months which participated by 15- 20 men and women in each center. 22 community women and men have completed adult literacy course successfully. The people of village Karachi Paro are thankful to PCDP for all the support regarding educating community here.

3. Challenges

Challenges Impact on Project Results Solutions

Due to drought situation in the desert area since last few years community is facing many problems specially lack of water. The community who had been migrated with their livestock could not able to return.

Keeping in view the situation it is very difficult to intervene in the desert area specially organizing any training or event.

PCDP has continued activities in the villages where community is available. PCDP is more focused on the Barrage area and intervening activities in this area.

Community engaged in cotton and rice crops harvesting (Barrage Area)

As communities are engaged in cotton picking and rice crop harvesting due to this reason the planned target could not be achieved timely.

PCDP has postponed some of the activities and these will be executing in future quarter.
