The Municipality of Samal derived its name from the Isamals who were its first inhabitants. The Isamals were brought by the first and second waves of migration from the Malay Region of Southeast Asia, dynastically ruled by a Datu up to the early part of the American Regime.

The latest ruling tribal Chieftain was Datu Taganiog who died on January 28, 1948. Discovery revealed that the latter lived at “Malibasa” (now known as Penaplata, the poblacion) where he exercised his general supervision. The word “Malibasa” meant honorable. The Isamals lived in perfect harmony as peace-loving people.

Pronouns and Antecedents

Since you first learned to speak, you have been using words such as I, you, he, she, it , we, and they.

These words are called pronouns.

Read the two pairs of sentences on the next slide and note the changes in the second sentence of each pair.

Example A, number 1 uses three nouns. Sentence 2 replaces two of them with pronouns. He stands for Anton; and her stands for Via. Both pronouns refer to other person.

In example B, number 2 also replaces the nouns with pronouns. Me replaces the noun – John who is the speaker himself; and you replaces the noun –Via who is the person spoken to.

Thus, a pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun – person speaking, someone spoken to, and other persons, places or things.

The noun for which a pronoun stands is its antecedent.

As shown in the table, personal pronouns have three different forms such as subject form, object form, and possessive form.

The Subject Forms

The subject forms of personal pronouns are used as subjects of the verb. They are also used as predicate pronouns. A predicate pronoun is a pronoun that follows a linking verb and is linked by the verb to the subject.

Here are some points to remember about predicate pronouns:

1.Predicate pronouns follow linking verbs such as is, was, were, and will be.

2.The predicate pronoun usually means the same thing as the subject .

3.A sentence with a predicate pronoun will usually make sense if the subject and the predicate pronoun are reversed.

The object forms of personal pronouns are used as the direct or indirect object or as the object of a preposition.

A compound object (either direct or indirect) may consist of two or more pronouns, or a noun and a pronoun, connected by and, or, or nor. The object form of pronouns is used in all compound objects.

The possessive form

The possessive form of personal pronouns is used as signal for ownership. They maybe adjectives that modify nouns, and as subjects, predicates, or objects of the prepositions or verbs.

There are some personal pronouns that are combined for emphasis such as: myself, ourselves, herself, themselves, yourself, yourselves, itself. These are called compound pronouns.
