RIDGE VENT

OverviewQuarrix Ridge Vent is the most versatile attic ventilation product on the market. It works with all roofing materials and installs on the hip and ridge for a clean appearance. Quarrix Ridge Vent helps keep attics cool and allows hot, moist air to release at the highest point, which is essential to achieving a balanced ventilation system. The StormStop® Membrane allows air to flow while preventing all forms of weather from entering the attic space. Quarrix Ridge Vent is available in 20’ Rolls and 4’ Sections.

Using ridge vents is always the best option for exhaust, however homes with large center beams are not compatible with their design. Multi-Use Vent can be installed just off the peak on both sides of the ridge to provide the same needed exhaust.

The amount of ventilation is controlled by the length of slot cut along the roof ridge. For the most attractive roofline, it is recommended that Quarrix Ridge Vent be installed along the entire ridge of the roof.

1. Ridge Ventilation Slot Preparation The slot may be pre-cut on a new roof before or after shingle installation or in a retrofit, the slot can be cut from the pre-shingled roof using a circular saw with a carbide tip blade (protective eye goggles should be worn during this process). For Quarrix Ridge Vent with 5⁄8” profile, cut a 2” slot (1” on each side of ridge) along the ridge(s). For a roof with a center beam, a 31⁄2” slot should be cut (13⁄4” on each side of ridge). For Quarrix Ridge Vents with 1” profile, cut a 21⁄2” slot (11⁄4” on each side ridge). For center beam applications a 4” slot should be cut (2” on each side of ridge). A minimum of 6” must be left uncut on each end of the ridge. Once the slot is cut and any overlapping shingles covering the ridge are trimmed and removed, the ridge is ready for vent installation.

2. End Cap Installation Pull apart a pre-cut section of the foam end cap found with the vent. Using a utility knife, make a cut in the StormStop® material 1⁄2” on each side, back from the end of the section. Using construction adhesive or sealant caulk, coat both sides of the StormStop material where it has been cut back at the end of the vent. Insert the foam end cap with the cut-back StormStop material between the foam end cap and the underside of the vent to assure a weather-tight seal. Sealant must be applied to roof shingles before installing vent. See Step 3 for approved sealants.

3. Vent Placement on RidgeAttach vent to the roof deck by driving a nail in each of the two corners on both ends of the vent. Also, drive two nails through the vent and foam end cap to hold foam in place on the ends of the ridge only. Nails should penetrate the wood roof deck at least 3⁄4”. It is not recommended to nail vent to ridge prior to cap shingle installation.

Because of the popularity of dimensional roofing material such as the newer 40/50 year and lifetime laminated shingles, we require that a bead of sealant be applied to the roof shingles before installing the vent on the ridge. This sealant should fill any voids between the bottom of the vent and the surface of the shingle. Use either butyl sealant conforming to ASTM C1085, latex sealant conforming to ASTM C834, silicone sealant complying with ASTM C920 or asphalt roofing cement complying with ASTM D4586. Roll out or place Quarrix Ridge

Vent along the entire length of slot also covering the 6” minimum uncut ridge on both ends. Bend vent into a “V” Shape. Secure at the lead edge after inserting

the end cap. Nail should penetrate roof deck a minimum of 3⁄4”. Pull the vent tight and secure at about 10’. Pull the rest of the vent tight and secure, inserting the end cap. Multiple lengths of vent can be joined by butting the sections tightly together. End caps should be inserted at the beginning and end of each section. Do not pre-fasten ridge vent along the entire vent; with Quarrix Ridge Vent’s One-Pass™ Installation, it is not necessary to pre-fasten the vent every 2’ to 3’ prior to cap shingle installation.

Plusieurs longueurs d’évent peuvent être reliées en emboutant les sections fermement ensemble. Insérez un capuchon d’extrémité au début et à la fin de chaque rouleau. Ne fixez pas préalablement l’évent de faîtage sur toute la longueur de l’évent; avec l’installation One-Pass™ de l’évent de faîtage Quarrix, il n’est pas nécessaire de préalablement fixer l’évent tous les 60 à 90 cm avant l’installation du bardeau du capuchon.

1. Hip and Ridge Ventilation Slot Preparation Determine how long of a hip and ridge ventilation slot will be required according to 1:300 rule. The ridge and hip ventilation slot may be pre-cut on a new roof before or after shingle installation or in a retrofit, the slot can be cut from the pre-shingled roof using a circular saw with a carbide tip blade (protective eye goggles should be worn during this process). Start ridge ventilation slot 6” from point where hip and ridge meet. For 5⁄8” profile vents, cut a 2” slot (1” on each side of ridge) along the ridge(s). For a roof with a center beam, a 31⁄2” slot should be cut (13⁄4” on each side of ridge). For 1” profile vents, cut a 21⁄2” slot (11⁄4” on each side of ridge). For center beam applications a 4” slot should be cut (2” on each side of ridge). If entire ridge requires ventilation, stop ventilation slot 6” from point where hip and ridge meet. To maintain structural integrity, one continuous slot is not recommended on hip applications. Start ventilation preparation by leaving 6” of hip uncut from where the ridge and hip meet. Cut a 31⁄2” wide slot for ventilation. Hip slot should be 18” in length, spaced with a 12” uncut area between each 18” opening. The slot for ventilation should not be cut any lower than the top 1⁄3 of the roof to maintain a balanced ventilation system.

2. End Cap Installation Pull apart a pre-cut section of the foam end cap found with the vent. Using a utility knife, make a cut in the StormStop® material 1⁄2” on each side, back from the end of the section. Using construction adhesive or sealant caulk, coat both sides of the StormStop material where it has been cut back at the end of the vent. Insert the foam end cap with the cut-back StormStop material between the foam end cap and the underside of the vent to assure a weather-tight seal. Because of the popularity of dimensional roofing material such as 40/50 year and lifetime laminated shingles,

we require that a bead of sealant be applied to the roof shingles before installing the vent on the ridge. This sealant should fill any voids between the bottom of the vent and the surface of the shingle. Use either butyl sealant conforming to ASTM C1085, latex sealant conforming to ASTM C834, silicon sealant complying with ASTM C 920 or asphalt roofing cement complying with ASTM D4586.

3. Vent Placement on Ridge Attach vent to the roof deck by driving a nail in each of the two corners on both ends of the vent. Also, drive two nails through the vent and foam end cap to hold foam in place on the ends of the ridge only. Nails should penetrate the wood roof deck at least 3⁄4”. It is not recommended to nail vent to ridge prior to cap shingle installation. Because of the popularity of dimensional roofing material such as the newer 40/50 year and lifetime laminated shingles we require that a bead of sealant be applied to the roof shingles, before installing the vent on the ridge. See step 2 for recommended sealants.

5. Hip and Ridge Vent Transition Using a utility knife, trim the end of the vent from the hip to the ridge. This creates the most attractive ridge and hip line. Insert the foam end cap under the ridge vent where it is at full width. Fasten vent for hip at point where it meets ridge. Roll out or place the vent all of the way down the hip, covering 2 pre-laid cap shingles at the bottom of the hip. Go back over hip vents and fasten at 4” intervals. If the vent is not being run the entire length of the hip, use the cap shingles to create a transition. Use sealant to fill any void left between the shingles and the remaining top layer of the vent. Be sure to apply roofing sealant to any spaces left by cap shingle used for transition. If 2 or more sections of ridge vent are being joined together, an end cap MUST be installed into each end of the joining sections. Repeat on all hips.

6. Cap Shingle InstallationApply the cap shingles to the hip and then to the ridge. Nail hip and ridge caps with roofing nails in a common overlapping pattern. Nails should penetrate the wood roof deck at least 3⁄4”. For fastest installation, a coil nail gun can be used as long as the minimum 3⁄4” penetration into the deck is maintained. It is important when installing this vent that you maintain the pitch of the roof. The vent has been installed properly if the bottom of the vent is flat on the roof and the peak is slightly rounded.

Remember, for the most attractive roofline, it is recommended that Quarrix ridge vents be installed along the entire ridge of the roof. For 5/8” profile vents, a 31⁄2” slot should be cut (13⁄4” on each side of ridge). For 1” profile vents a 4” slot should be cut (2” on each side of the ridge). the slot is cut and the battens are installed, it is time to install the field and trim tiles per the tile manufacturer’s installation instructions. After field tile installation, the ridge now is ready for vent installation.

4. Multi-Use Vent InstallationNail lead edge of vent into roof deck. Nail foam end cap in place. All nails must penetrate the roof deck at least ¾”. Roll out Multi-Use Vent and pull tight, nail at 10 feetand again at the end of the roll. Tack the vent along the wall, making sure nails penetrate plastic and StormStop membrane. Nail every 6”.

5. FinishingInstall metal flashing as counter flashing on top of vent. Install siding over the vent piece on wall. When finished, siding should cover the wall and overlap the metal flashing.

Wildland Urban Interface Compliant Vents for roof ventilation are often found in the soffit. Placing vents in these locations creates a perfect path for fire to enter the roof structure. If the vent must be in this location it is better to place it farther from the wall and closer to the fascia. The vent can also be placed in the fascia or near the lower edge of the roof.

Nail down the bottom lead edge of vent and in the

middle through the end cap. Roll out vent and pull tight; nail at 10 feet and again at the end of the roll.

4. Finishing Shingle InstallationInstall felt and shingles on top of vent, treating the thick edge of the vent as a starter course. Install shingles per manufacturer’s instructions.

Eave Intake for Tile Roof Application Follow Eave Intake steps 1-3 as noted above, then install Quarrix Tile Battens on up to three courses leading up to Quarrix Multi-Use Vent. Metal flashing should be installed on top of Multi-Use Vent. Use mastics at top edge and sides of Multi-Use

Vent. Then install peel and seal underlayment, starting at the 3” air intake and run all the way back to next course of battens. According to the APA-The Engineered Wood Association, continuous ridge vents, like Quarrix Ridge Vent, can be used in conjunction with a roof diaphragm and meet the requirements to withstand lateral loads in seismic and high wind designs. Quarrix Ridge Vent can be used in unblocked as well as blocked roof diaphragms.

According to the APA with an unblocked diaphragm, there is no requirement for a connection to be made between unsupported edges of adjacent panels. With an unblocked diaphragm-type construction Quarrix Ridge Vent can be installed with no modification to the published installation instructions. In an unblocked diaphragm, only the 4-foot wide panel ends occur over and are nailed to common framing. This is the most common type of diaphragm used in standard residential construction.

According to the APA with a blocked diaphragm, the use of a continuous ridge vent is slightly more challenging because all edges of all adjacent panels must occur over and be attached to common framing. This additional nailing provides a greater number of fasteners available to transfer shear from one panel to another, thus increasing the overall shear capacity and rigidity or stiffness of the diaphragm. This is as true for the ridge as it is for other panels occurring in a common plane. This can be done by placing blocking in alternating spaces between the rafters or joists. At the location where there is not blocking, the slot at the ridge that is cut for venting, is increased in width to the required opening for proper ventilation. At the location where there is blocking, the required nail spacing shall be halved, so that twice as many nails are present to make this connection in every other space.

How is proper attic ventilation achieved with alternating blocking in a blocked diaphragm application?

With alternating blocking the determining factor for NFA (Net Free Area) is the width of the slot cut at the ridge of the roof. Since the length of the allowable venting area along the ridge is cut in half. The width of the slot is increased to 2.5” to insure proper ventilation.

When venting with a blocked diaphragm, warm air travels through the unblocked sections of the ridge, flowing over the blocked sections of the ridge and exiting along the entire length of the ridge vent. The warm air from the attic space will be properly vented using this application. 5⁄8” profile Quarrix Ridge Vent will provide 12.7 square inches of NFA per lineal foot of the roof in this application. Quarrix Ridge vent, when properly installed, meet or exceed the requirements of all nationally recognized building codes for ventilation.

These charts represent the minimum length of Quarrix Ridge Vent, in combination with soffit ventilation, required to properly ventilate your attic space. Determine the square footage of attic space by multiplying length x width of the house. Find your approximate square footage on the chart and read across.

The chart will tell you how much NFA is required at the ridge, the recommended footage of Quarrix Ridge Vent, and the minimum square inches NFA of soffit ventilation required. These charts utilize the F.H.A. Standard for Static Ventilation as found in H.U.D. Requirements for Proper Ventilation - Ref: M.P.S. 403.3. They use the 1:300 ratio (1 sq. ft. of ventilation for every 300 sq. ft. of attic space). Quarrix numbers are rounded up to the nearest foot.

The numbers in these charts reflect the minimum lineal footage of slot that should be cut into the ridge. For the most attractive roofline possible, it’s recommended that the ridge vent be installed along the entire ridge and hips of the roof. See page 30 for metric conversions of the charts.

Step 1

Once house wrap has been applied, install a 3⁄4” (19 mm) Quarrix Furring Strip horizontally just below the soffit at the very top of the house wall. Also install a 3⁄4” (19 mm) Furring Strip horizontally at the bottom of the wood on the house wall.

Step 2

Install 3⁄8” (10 mm) Furring Strip every 16” on center using fasteners that penetrate plywood 1⁄2”.

Step 4

Attach siding according to building codes using fasteners long enough to sufficiently penetrate into framing.

Step 3

If fasteners are used to secure the tile to the roof, the penetration of the fastener must be into the roof deck for structural hold* according to the manufacturer’s specification.

*Quarrix Tile Batten cannot be used for structural support of the tile.

Step 1

Unfold Quarrix Tile Batten to full 8-foot length and align along pre-chalked line. Nail or staple 2” in from the starting edge. Move over to the hinge of the Tile Batten and nail or staple 2” from hinge of the fold. Note: Power nail or staple tools can be used to place fasteners.

Step 2

Place a nail or staple 10” in from each of the fasteners that have already been placed. Place an additional nail or staple in the middle of the section for a total of 5 fasteners per 4-foot section of batten.

Repeat on other side of 4-foot section of the batten. Use this nail or staple pattern when fastening the remaining battens to the roof deck. Fasteners should penetrate the roof deck a minimum of 1⁄2”. See manufacturer’s specifications. Note: Use a utility knife when cutting the tile batten to desired length.

Step 3

Furring Strips should be installed approximately 1” from the edge of the wall. Furring Strips should also be used under trim, in corners and around windows. The furring strips should be installed to support the width of the trim.

QUARRIX BUILDING PRODUCTS LIFETIME MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY

Limited Warranty. Quarrix products are warranted to you, the original purchaser, against defects in materials and workmanship in manufacture under normal use and service, provided the vent has been installed in strict accordance with the Quarrix installation instructions, and under normal use and service, subject to the conditions set forth below, to be free of defects in materials and workmanship in manufacture for lifetime from the date of purchase.

This Warranty is NOT transferable under any circumstances and applies only to the original purchaser of the Quarrix products. The warranty period starts on the date of purchase by the original purchaser and terminates on the earlier of the date of the sale of the property or date of removal from the property on which the Quarrix Products were first installed.

Remedies. During this Limited Warranty period, should any defect in materials and workmanship in manufacture occur that directly results in damage or loss to the Quarrix Products, Quarrix will supply new replacement Quarrix Products without charge to you, for up to the lifetime of the product following the date of purchase.

Limitations of Coverage. Quarrix will NOT be liable for, and this Warranty does NOT apply to:1. Failure, defect, damage or loss resulting from misuse, abuse, neglect or improper installation not in strict adherence to the manufacturer’s written instructions.2. Damages to your ridge vent beyond normal use including, but not limited to:a. Fire, flood, hail, lightning, windstorm, tornado, earthquake, hurricane, other violent storms or natural disasters, and Acts of God.b. Improper storage or handling of the ridge vent.c. Defect in or misapplication of materials used to install ridge vent.d. Alteration, unreasonable use, accident or negligence.e. Settlement, movement or damage to the interior or exterior of the building, foundation or any property contained therein.f. Any cause other than manufacturing defects.g. Labor costs.h. Damages resulting from the removal or reinstallation.

Notification of Claims. In order to recover under this Limited Warranty, you must submit any claim under this Warranty in writing explaining the nature of the alleged defect, a description of the product, the purchase date and any applicable serial numbers, and send with proof of purchase (to establish that you are the original purchaser) to: Quarrix Building Products, 705 Pennsylvania Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55426, within thirty (30) days of discovery of the alleged defect.

Quarrix Building Products reserves the right of inspection of the Quarrix Products by an authorized representative before having any obligation under this Limited Warranty and prior to any settlement of a claim. Purchaser must allow reasonable investigation of the claim. Quarrix Building Products will evaluate the claim and resolve it in accordance with the terms of this Warranty.

Other Conditions. This Limited Warranty is exclusive. Q. How does StormStop® work? A. The membrane material used in Quarrix Ridge Vent and Quarrix Multi-Use Vent is a spun-bound non-absorbent plastic. Twenty nine percent of our membrane is fiber. The other seventy-one percent is open. This lightweight membrane makeup allows air to pass through but stops water. Water pools on the surface of the membrane but is not allowed to penetrate it.

Q. Will StormStop reduce airflow? A. The airflow of a ventilation system is determined by the Net Free Area of the vent, the slot width and the ventilation at the eave or soffit (a balanced system). The recommended slot width for installation of Quarrix Ridge Vent, when used with a balanced system, provides adequate airflow for efficient ventilation.

Q. What is the NFA of the product? A. The Net Free Area of the product is 12.7 inches per lineal foot for the 5⁄8” profile product and 19 inches per lineal foot for the 1” profile product.

Q. Will the StormStop filter clog? A. The material is not a filter, but is a special membrane. Unlike products with a filter, the material is non-porous and will not allow matter such as dirt or loose insulation to lodge within it. Products that actually use a filter material are susceptible to clogging.

Q. You do not have baffles, so will this product perform as well as baffled products? A. The most crucial element to the performance of a ventilation system is that it is in balance. If an attic has a properly balanced system, the airflow will move from the eaves and the bottom of the attic to the top, pushing out heat and moisture in a natural flow using air pressure, thermal effect and diffusion. If the system were to be unbalanced, and the NFA at the ridge is higher than at the eave, a reverse airflow can occur causing an opposite effect to what is desired. Baffles have no effect on achieving a balanced system. For a system to be in balance there must be an equal or greater amount of intake at the eaves than what is being exhausted at the ridge.

Q. What other reasons is a non-baffled product better than a baffled product? A. Baffles are unattractive and easily seen on the roof. In addition, plastic baffles can break off or deteriorate over time. Baffles also are susceptible to clogging from leaves and other debris.

Q. What about the Bernoulli effect? A. The Bernoulli effect has to do with wind passing over an object. When venting, a baffle is only as effective as the environment in which it operates. A baffled venting system

only operates at its optimum efficiency when the wind passes perpendicularly over the baffle at a precise angle. If there is no wind over the baffle it does not aid in venting of the roof. In addition, your ridgeline has to be facing the way the wind blows for the baffle to perform. A baffle alone will not provide adequate continuous ridge ventilation; it must be a part of a balanced system.

Q. How easy is installation of Ridge Vent? A. Our product easily rolls out and is quick and easy to install using a coil nail gun. There is one simple additional step when inserting end-caps. A small cut in the membrane must be made to assure a proper seal at the end of the vent. See page 14.

Q. Has the product been tested? A. Yes! The product has been put through rigorous research and development testing at Architectural Testing Institute in York Pennsylvania. The results:> It withstood tests similar to DADE County protocol of 8.8 inches of rain per hour with 110-MPH winds and easily passed.> It also passed the ICC snow simulation test at 35 MPH and

70 MPH with no infiltration. Quarrix Ridge Vents meet the conditions of acceptance of the Dust Exposure Test with no reduction in airflow.
