Mission Statement

Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition

The Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition was founded

with the intent to support the visual arts and

artists of Oklahoma.  This core mission is

supported by the belief that art is essential.

Visual art and artists can enrich the lives of the

communities in which they live.  Supporting

these artists and their work is a worthwhile

endeavor.  We believe that Oklahoma artists can

have a vital and fulfilling career.  It is our duty to

help artists gain the tools to sustain themselves

in their chosen career.  It is our goal to connect

Oklahoma artists with each other and with the

communities in which they live.  Artists and

audiences can flourish if given the opportunities

to learn from one another. 

About OVACOklahoma Visual Arts Coalition

The Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition (OVAC) is a non­profit

organization that has helped artists in Oklahoma realize their

potential for the past 28 years.  OVAC promotes public interest in

the arts by helping people of all ages understand the visual arts.  

Annually OVAC serves more than 1,700 artists throughout the state

through funding, education, and exposure. We expose 24.000

people every year to arts and artists in their community.  Our

publications and public events help more than 3,500 young

Oklahomans.  This is all made possible with the help of our more

than 275 volunteers.

2016 Momentum

ExhibitionsOklahoma Visual Arts Coalition

OVAC has four major art exhibitions that

showcase the works of Oklahoma artists. These

include: 24 Works on Paper, Art 365, Concept,

and Momentum

24 Works on PaperThis is a traveling exhibition that tours galleries around

Oklahoma. The biennial tour showcases the art of living

Oklahoman's.  Entries for 2016 start in June and the Exhibition

tours August 2016­January 2018.

Art 365Art 365 is an exhibition that selects five Oklahoma artists and gives

them a year to create groundbreaking new art.  These artists are

also given a grant of $12,000 and are paired with a nationally

recognized curator to help them with this project.

Exhibitions Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition

ConceptConcept is a triennial exhibition that promotes outstanding artists in

Oklahoma and pairs them with fellow artists from the region.  The

goal of this exhibit is to increase exposure for artists and create

connections in the art community. Concept 2016 paired 4 artists

from Oklahoma with 4 artists from partner city St. Louis.  Their work

was exhibited at Hardesty Arts Center in Tulsa, and The Luminary

art gallery in St. Louis.

MomentumMomentum is an annual art exhibition for artists under 30. This

exhibit is geared to help young artists gain experience as well as

introduce their work to the community. The event is held in both

Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

OVAC is proud to offer five different types of grants for eligible

Oklahoma artists.  These grants help individual artists create new

works of art, hone their professional craft through continued

learning, and lead the way to developing community art projects.  

Professional Basics GrantA grant for up to $500 dollars of matched funds to help an artist

get supplies to help them get started in their career.

Education GrantThis grant offers up to $500 of matched funds for an artist to

attend workshops and conferences.  

Creative projects GrantA grant of up to $1,500 for an artist to create new work for a

public event type showing.

Community/Artist Partnership(CAP) GrantThis is a $1,200 grant of community partner matched fund that

will culminate in a community based art creation.

Oklahoma Visual Arts Fellowships &Student Awards of ExcellenceEvery year OVAC gives out four awards to deserving Oklahoma

artists.  The Oklahoma Visual Arts Fellowship gives $5,000 to two

recipients each year.  The Student Awards of Excellence awards

two young artists with $500 each.  The Awards are chosen each

year from submission judged by a guest curator.

EducationOklahoma Visual Arts Coalition

ARTiculateA series of presentations and speakers for artists to learn more

about the business of art.  OVAC brings in speakers to talk with

artists on a variety of subjects.

Artist Survival Kit WorkshopsThis is a series of professional development workshops for

artists to gain the skills they need to succeed in their careers

as artists.  This workshop offers an opportunity to meet other

artists from around the state and share experiences about the

business of art.

Resources for High school ArtistsOVAC has made a guide for young artists to explore the

opportunities available to them in Oklahoma through education

and grants.

Oklahoma Art Writing & CuratorialFellowshipThis program awards 12 fellows the opportunity to cultivate

their skills by offering access to regional and national curators,

critics, organizers, and academics. The program includes

private lectures and hands­on workshops.

Tulsa Art Studio TourThe Tulsa Art Studio tour is a program designed to introduce the

works of local Tulsa artists to the community.  The tour offers the

public the rare opportunity to watch an artist work.  There is also an

opportunity for the artists and public to meet and discuss art.

FundraisingOklahoma Visual Arts Coalition

12 x 12 Art Fundraiser

What better way for an organization devoted to the visual arts to

raise money than an art show? The 12x12 Art fundraiser raises

funds for all of OVAC's programs.  The yearly event event hosts

175 of Oklahoma's finest artists with food, music and fun. The

name 12x12 comes from the perameters set for each piece of

art. Each work must be 12x12 inches in order to be considered

for the showing.  The artworks then go into a silent auction with

each piece starting $175.

Executive Director Holly Moye Holly comes to OVAC from Boston

where she graduated with Honors from

Boston University with a  BA and MA in

Art History.  She was Director for Boston

based ArtsBridge. An organization

devoted to connecting students with

educational and growth opportunities in

visual and performing arts. Moye

previously worked for a political

campaign consulting firm.

Associate Director Lauren ScarpelloLauren comes to OVAC from New

Orleans where she graduated with a MA

in Arts Administration from New Orleans

University. Lauren is the editor of

OVAC's Publication Art Focus Oklahoma.

She has a depth of experience in working

with non­profit art organizations.  She

manages all of OVAC's marketing and

Accounts Supervisor Jarica WalshJarica came to OVAC as an intern from

the University of Oklahoma. Her

passion and dedication to the visual

arts in Oklahoma assured her a place

with OVAC after she completed her

studies.  She is an active artist working

with ceramics and fiber. She is an Artist

INC OKC 2015 Fellow.

Artist Repels Down Grain Silo with OVAC Grant

Oklahoma City, OKlahoma­­­ Artist Rick Sinnett needed

climbing gear to finish his massive public art piece on the side

of an old grain silo near the heart of Oklahoma City.  The silo

has been converted into an urban rock climbing facility.  Sinnett

in partnership with a Grant from the Oklahoma Visual Artist

Coalition was able to complete the 100 ft by 128ft mural.  When

asked for comment Mr. Sinnett said, "A project like this would

not have been possible without the partnership of an

organization like OVAC." You can see Rick Sinnetts mural from

both directions driving down I­40 coming into Oklahoma City.

The project was covered by public television station OETA. The

program is viewable from the OETA website oeta.tv.
