OverviewRedstart Hybrid Brassica combines the rapid growth characteristics of forage rape with the dry matter yield and winter hardiness of kale. As such, it offers a highly valuable and versatile forage option for summer and autumn grazing, or out-wintering, for cattle and sheep.

Product Info Sheet
Drill early as a break crop before reseeding
• May/June sowing offers the potential for high yields of quality forage in 10-12 weeks
• Grown to full potential, Redstart can deliver up to 10t DM/ha
• Feed quality can exceed 30% protein and 13MJ/kg ME
• Resistance to bolting helps maintain quality
• Ideal break crop within grassland reseeding programme
Drill early and utilise the regrowth potential
• Redstart has the capacity for regrowth to allow repeat grazings
• Management including control of stocking rate and back fencing maximises regrowth potential
• Second grazings can yield up to 4t DM/ha
• Quality of late season regrowth remains high
Drill later for autumn grazing and out-wintering
• Crops sown mid-July to August offer valuable late season grazing
• Ideal for out-wintering systems due to winter hardiness
• Supplementation with in-situ fibre (big bale silage / haylage) creates complete out-wintering ration for youngstock or in-calf heifers

Trial Results UK trials carried out by Germinal’s product development team have demonstrated the potential for Redstart Hybrid Brassica to perform in a range of situations, delivering livestock performance as a result of its dry matter yield, nutritional quality and exceptional utilisation.
Hybrid brassicas are relatively new crops, having been developed by crossing kale with forage rape. As with kale and forage rape, leaf-to-stem ratio and stem quality are key factors in overall nutritional value of hybrid brassicas, and subsequent livestock performance achieved.
