6. INFORMATION ON THE NATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM

6.1. Organisation of study programme

The study period in Slovakia is the academic year, which is divided into winter and summer semesters. Theacademic year starts on September lst and ends on August 3lst of the following year. At the beginning, there isa preparatory period, which is connected with the enrolment of students, introductory Iectures, and otherorganisational questions. The insfruction periods in winter and summer terms are followed by examinationsessions.

The teaching process includes various forms of instruction such as lectures, seminars, exercises, laboratory work, proj ects, practical train ing, consu ltations, etc.

The rules on organisation of the course of study are laid down in the Study and Examinalion Order of facultyapproved by academic senate of faculty. The study is rather examination-oriented, i.e., the exams prescribed bythe study programme, which is shown in his Student Book, have to be completed within the academic year. Inthis system, only students who have passed all examinations in the given year can proceed to the next year ofstudy.

ln recent period (from OCT 2002), the faculty use the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

6.2. Completion of study

Higher education study is completed in lniinier's study by passing State examination. The State examinationalso includes the defence of a thesis. The diploma thesis and State examination should examine the student'sability to work creatively in the field of study he has pursued.

6.3, Grading system

The grading system for examinations successfillly passed at that time represent the following scale of grades (till28OCT 2AAl:

Grade ln English ln Slovak

1 excellent (v!bome)

2 very good (velmi dobre)

3 good (dobre)

For a credit (zdpoiet) without the examination prescribed in some subjects, the term "credited" (zapoCitand) isused.

The grading system for examinations successfirlly passed at that time represent the following scale of grades(after 28 OCT 2002):

Grade ln English ln Slovak

A 1 excellent (vf borne)

B 1,5 very good (vetmi dobre)

C 2 good (dobre)

D 2,5 satisfactory (uspokojivo)

E 3 sufficient (dostato6ne)

For a credit (zapoiet) without the examination prescribed in some subjects, the term "credited" (zapoiitand) isused.

6.4. Qualifications giving access to faculty study programmes

The general prerequisite for admission to higher education study is a secondary school-leaving certificate anddemonstration of skills required for the appropriate study in the higher education institution to be verified, as a

rule, through admission examinations.

The criteria for determining the necessary aptitudes and the manner of their verification are approved by theacademic senate of the faculty upon the proposal of the dean. The entranceexaminations are justwritten (tests). As a rule, they are organised in two subject areas, mathematics and general knowledge of given branch of study.

A decision about admission is usually made on the basis of thlprevious achievements (average marks fiom thesecondary school cenificates and secondary school-leaving cenificate) and the results of the enrranceexaminations. The dean decides the admission of an applicant to higher education study.

6.5. Final quali{ication in certifnd education

According to the Higher Education Act, our education institution awards the academic degree:

Bakaldr. abbr. Bc., which is a degree awarded in lechnical and economical fields of study afrer 3 years of study.

Inlinier, abbr. lng., which is a degree awarded in technical and economical fields of study after 5 yean of study.
