Bell work

Draw these axes and plot the points (3,4), (1,2), (-1,0) and join them up. What can you say about the line?

Page 2: Quadratic Graphs

Connect the Learning

You have learned a large number of ways to solve

quadratic equations.

Today we’re going to learn the fourth way

Page 3: Quadratic Graphs

Learning objectives

To be able to draw a quadratic graph

To be able to solve quadratic equations from the graph

Page 4: Quadratic Graphs

Input

y = x² + 3x - 5

When x is 0, what is y?

When x is 1, what is y?

When x is -1, what is y?

How else could we organise this?

Page 5: Quadratic Graphs

y = x² + 3x - 5

Draw a table for x and y

Use x from 3 to -6.

Fill in values for y.

Plot the points on your graph and join up to make a smooth curve.

What is the minimum point?

Estimate the solution to x² + 3x – 5 = 0

Input

Activity

Exercise 23A,

page 382

Page 7: Quadratic Graphs

Demonstrate

Here is the graph of y = 2x² + x -3

Write down an estimate of it’s minimum point

Write down an estimate of the solution to 2x² + x -3 = 3

Review/ Plenary

Write in your book three things you need to remember about today’s lesson

Write down one thing you are not clear about and would like to go over again

Finally, write down a number from 1-5 suggesting how well you met the learning objective.
