Be a Teacher Moments and Partner Work with Mrs.Sammons and Mr. Raymond11/12YO English Literatureand Writing In all of my English Literature and Writing classrooms,we focus on building both writing and reading skillscontinuously throughout the year. While students buildthese skills independently, occasionally, they get to workwith a partner. Research has shown, that in manysettings, partner work or small group work supportsstudents struggling with literacy and English languagedevelopments (Promoting the Educational Success ofChildren and Youth Learning English). Additionally, byincluding regular peer-assisted learning opportunities, ithas shown to foster student motivation for furtherengagement in learning. Recently, students in the 11/12YO English Literature andWriting class have been working on a new unit calledFilm and Drama. In this unit, students have spent timelearning about how Film and Literature are both relatedand yet unique in their own ways. In the assessment forthe final TSW’s for this unit, students are asked to createtheir own script that can later be acted out and filmed.Currently, students are in the building stages of theirscripts, plotting an 8-Point story arc and writing thescripts. In regard to a Teacher Moment, each student isresponsible for their own section of their Story Arc. Afterthey finish their section, they are in charge of sharingwhat they wrote and drew with their partner. With thisactivity, students can build their communications andcritical thinking skills, all while enhancing their creativity. In the coming weeks, we hope to film each student’screation and be able to share with the community. Mostimportantly, students are learning and having fun whilethinking outside of the box and practicing skills that canbe used outside of the classroom. There is no shortageof 21st Century Skills in this classroom!

In English literature, students are regularlyasked to express what theyhave learned while readingeither in written form or viaillustrations. In Response toLiterature (RTLs), OnePagers are a great way todo this using a combinationof the two.

Science 8 YO This week, the 8 YOs’ were like gardeners and zookeepers. We were up for the challenged to goout on a very hot day. We visited the garden from the back of the school building and from theMudd’s garden to see the plants. Indeed, learning did not only take place in the four walls of ourclassroom. The students observed how the plants are being affected by their environment.Students learned that the environment played an important role in the plants’ traits and it affectstheir development. This week, we also took for a walk to different 7 environments in our GalleryWalk. The students explored that animals have different adaptations or traits depending on theirenvironment. These adaptations help the organisms able to survive in their environment. Studentswere able to give examples of animal adaptations and their functions depending on theirenvironment.

11 YO Science This week, the 11 YO students were exploring the properties of the wave to understand itsbehavior and its functions. Through the help of a simulation lab activity, students were able tostudy wave’s properties by measuring its wavelength, explore the relationship among frequency, wavelength, and amplitude. The 11 YO students are very determined to finish the school yearstrong and will become stronger together with all the QSI teachers who are there to support theirsuccess. Congratulations to all!!!

IE Class Well, we were having fun while we were learning. This week, the IE kids were learning how towrite simple sentences. The students tried different fun activities about learning sentences. Thestudents practiced identifying the two main parts of sentences – the subject and the predicate. They had fun arranging the scrambled words to make a full sentence. Through this activity, students helped out each other and remembered the rules in writing a sentence by observingcapitalization, correct spacing, and punctuation. Another activity that the students had fun learningwas spinning the fidget into a wheel picker. The student had to take a word or phrase from thedifferent pattern formation of sentences such as subject-verb-object-place-time until they couldbuild up to two sentences. The students are also learning new sight words by playing BINGO andlearning expressions or asking questions about feeling by playing a card game.
