In Septe mbe r 1947, a report was rece 5. ved from the British : ar Graves Commission concernin g the remains of an American, i dentified by uniform only, which we r e found in the Loh Ce:r:1etery near Luedanscheid 4 According to the Germans, on ly British flyers had been buried in this cemetery durin e; the war. 'I'he se r enw.ins wertl recovered. f rom a r;re.ve wh ich had been marked "Unknovm En glish Flyer" and were taken to the United States Military Cemete ry, Neuville-en-Condroz, vel gium, as an Unlmown since there were no means through which immediate identification could be established •

Sub sequent investigation and interro~tion of German civilians fami liar wi th the incident, r e vealed t.hat the re:cm.ins had been re buried by the Germans as British in the Loh Cemetery after bein g removed from t he Brunin gsha.usen Cemetery, also in t he vicinity of Luedenscheid, v:here they were initially interred on l9 .March 1945, the d~y after the crash of a. f i ghte r p lane . A careful examinat ion of t h e remains by te chnicians skilled in i cientifioation procedures resulted in an excellent comparison of the detailed dental and physical characteristics with that recorded in your son's Army records. Therefore, after a complete review of the nature and substance of t1e evider.ce, the identifica~ion of the remains as those of your son was concluded.

The "Request fo r Disposition of Rems. insf' form whioh you executed in re gard to the final interment of the remains of your son, the late Flight Officer Warren G. Myers , has been received and accepted by our office.

You may be assured that the Department of the Army will comply with your desire to have the remains of your son pe~ently interred in a United States Military Cemetery overseas .

I regret to advise you that the United States Military O~metery Hamm, Luxembourg, is closed to future interments a.nd disinterments. However , the United States Military Cemetery Neuvilla-en-Condroz. Belgium, where the remains of your son ware previouely interred, i"w.s bean designated as a permanent resting place for our heroio dead of World ar II . Since this cemetery has available grave spaoe, the remains of your loved one will be reverently reinterred therein.

All necessary arrangements ~or burial~ military hanors services will be completed and provided by the Government. a~sured that every detail will be accomplished with all the dignity traditional for our honored dead.

Myers, T 063Z77, Ac, 509th Fighter Squadron, 405t.ll Fighter Clt-oup, was missing in action, in !lyi.ng pa.y status, over Ger.ma.ny, on 18 March 194.). Under the proJisions of Seetio.n 5, Missing Persons Act., a Finding of Death was issued for Flight Officer Myers, setti.Qg the presumed date of his death as 19 lfareh 1946 (SR&D No. 5586) .

Flight !fic.er Myers was not seen to leave the aircraft.

2. In view of the existing discrepancies in the statements regarding original burial in a casket of remains recovered from the scene of a plane crash at Peddensiepen and disinterment of remains wrapped in a parachute which were transferred to L0h Cemetery by Peter Kimm, it is requested that a _further search of the area be made for other remains which may be associat~d with F/0 Meyers or infor.mation which will clarify conflicting evidence.

1. Reference is made to Report of Reburial for Unlalovm x..<,859, lBIC Neuville-en-Gondroz, Belgium, Plot EE, Rovr 3, Grave 66.

2. Corrected Burial Report has been received identifying the above mentioned deceased as i/o Warren G. Myers, T~3277, based on date 1 Place of death and grave marker.

3. The Narrative Report, dated 21 September 1947, attached to Report of Reburial states that the cross on the grave in Loh Cemetery in which X-6859 was buried was marked "Unbekannter Engl. Flieger, 18.3.194~•. Hoaever, the Disinterring Narrative Report indicates no grave marker was found when remains were disinterred.

4. It is further noted that statements of Arirur Schulte and Fritz Klever reveal the body of the deceased flier was buried in a casket in the cemetery at Brueninghausen, while the statement of Peter Kinnn, who disinterred the remains of Unknown X-6859 from Brueninghausen, indicates the remains were wrapped in a parachute •

5. In .view of the above mentioned discrepancies, it is requested that subject case be reinvestigated and this Off ice notified of results.

The r emains of UnknownX-6859 were recovered from the Lob Cemetery, Luedensoheid, Germany. They were originally interred in the Bruninghousen Cemetery. An ID Tag of F/0 Warren G. Myers, T-63277 was found in the grave at Bruninghousen. (See Narrative 21 September 1947 and 15 December 1949).

F/0 Myers was the sole occupant of P- 47 Aircraft #42-28443 which cr ashed 1 mile ( W. of Luedenscbeid, Germany on 18 March 1945.

In complia nce witli your cable WCL 22144, a nd furt her to 3rd indorsement from this Hea dquarters, dated 29 November 1949 and our cables AGRC 1027 and 1401 (copie s attached) forwarded herewith are true copies of narrat ive of i nvestigation and d i sinterment together with relevant ant hropolog ical report relative to the ad ditional remains r ecovered from Bruninghausen, Germany. These rema ins were succe s sfully consolidated with those of ~known X-6859 (Neuville) identified as F/0 Warren G. ~YERS , T-63277.

2. In ref ere nce to paragraph 2 of 2nd indorsement (copy attached), the transfer of t he rema ins from Bruning ha usen to Loh Cemetery, Germany, subsequently disinterred a nd designa ted X-6859, could not have been undertaken with all necessary care as indica t ed in the attached report of investigation and which, in the opinion of this Headquarters, would. account for the discrepancies referred to.

3. In view of the above, it is recommended that the identification referred to here i n be a pproved and this Headquarters notified accordingly. In t h e mean time the remains concerned wi l l continue to be held in suspense sta tus pending receipt ·Of concurrence with present identifica tion from your of fice.

In view of the existing discre pancies in the statements regarding original burial in a casket of remains recovered from the scene of a plane crash at Peddensiepen and disinterment of remains wra pped in a parachute which were tra nsferred to Loh Cemetery by Peter Kimm , it is r equested that a further &earch of the area be made for other remains which ma~r be associated with F/0 Meyers or information which will clarify conflicting evidenca.

SUBJECT: Identification of World War II Deceased

TO: Commanding General American Graves Registration Command European Area APO 58, c/o Postmaster New York, New York

16 September 1949

1. Reference is made to Report of Reburial for Unknown X-6859, USMC Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium, Plot EE, Row 3, Grave 66.

2. Corrected Burial Report has been received ident~~ing the above mentioned deceased as F/0 Warren G. Myers, T-63277, based on date, place of death and grave marker.

3. The Narrative Report, dated 21 September 1947, attached to Report of Reburial states that the cross on the grave in Loh Cemetery in which X-6859 was buried was marked "Unbekannter Engl. Flieger, 18.3.1945". However, the Disinterring Narrative Report indicates no grave marker was found when remains were disinterred.

4. It is further noted that statements of' Artur Schulte and Fritz Klever reveal the body of' the deceased flier was buried in a casket in

the cemetery .at Brueningbausen, whil~ the statement of Peter Kimm, who disinterreq/ the remains of' Unlmown X-6859 from Brueninghausen, indicates ~· the remairis were wrapped in a parachute.

5. In view of the above mentioned discrepancies, it is requested that subject case be reinvestigated and this Office notified of results.
