Studying for a postgraduate
qualification allows you tobecome more specialised.
Gaining a recognised
qualification in an area may give
you the skills, knowledge and
confidence needed to climb
your chosen career ladder.
You can also use a
postgraduate course as a
means of changing direction
and getting into a new line
of work. In specific types
of occupations, you may
be expected to fulfil the
requirements of professional or
statutory bodies and need togain recognised qualifications.
Part-time research degrees
(eg a PhD) as well as taught
postgraduate courses offer
you flexible ways of continuing
professional development.
However, you may just like
to challenge yourself through
learning and enjoy working
towards a goal. Whatever your
reasons, QMU is committed to
providing you with a flexible and
friendly learning environment
which can help you on your
road to success.
FLEXIBLE LEARNINGOPPORTUNITIESTO FIT IN WITH YOURLIFESTYLE
Whether you are in your early
twenties or are returning to
education after a long gap,
staff at QMU will endeavour to
provide an environment which
will support your learning while
also providing enough flexibility
to study around career, social
and family commitments.
QMU therefore offers full-time,part-time and distance learning
where specialists come together
from a variety of backgroundsto pool their knowledge, share
ideas and develop creative
solutions.
RESEARCH STRENGTHS
As well as high quality teaching,
we have a strong reputation for
our research excellence. Our
research activity is internationally
recognised and informs and
adds value to our teaching at all
levels. As with all UK universities,
we are scrutinised on our
research performance through
the UK-wide ResearchAssessment Exercise (RAE).
Our results show that 53%
of our academic staff were
submitted to the RAE, which
indicates that QMU has the
highest proportion of research
active staff in the modern
university sector in Scotland.
Overall the results are very
positive for QMU with the
overwhelming majority of our
research in two areas (Linguistics
and Communication, Cultural &
Media Studies) being recognised
as internationally significant. In both these areas we have also
been able to demonstrate that
our research is world leading.
In Allied Health, where our
research focuses primarily on
policy and practice issues often
in a Scottish context, we have
demonstrated that we have
national recognition in the
majority of our work. In Drama,
Dance & Performing Arts and
in Business & Management
Studies we have also
demonstrated that the majority
of our research is at least atnational standard.
ENHANCING QUALITY
OF LIFE AND SERVINGCOMMUNITIES
Behind all of QMUs postgraduate
courses is a strong philosophy
of enhancing quality of life and
serving communities. Today,
graduates of QMU have used
their skills and knowledge to
make improvements to the lives
of many different people
whether that be through the
development of better business
practice for improved customer
service, breakthroughs in
healthcare, the development
of creative arts and culture forpeoples enjoyment, helping
communities to fight for
environmental justice or working
with people in third world
countries to rebuild their
communities after years of
destruction. Whatever you
choose to do with your
postgraduate qualification, there
is little doubt that the skills and
knowledge you develop while
at QMU will help you to achieve
success in your own right while
at the same time have a positive
impact on society.
courses that can suit different
lifestyles. Please see theindividual course information
for availability.
KEEPING TEACHING UP-TO-DATE AND RELEVANT
In order to meet the changing
needs of society, lecturing staff
are actively engaged in ongoing
research and collaborative
work with external agencies,
businesses and academics
from other institutions. This helps
to ensure that their teaching is
up-to date and relevant which
means that you benefit from thelatest thinking and developments
in the field. As well as the
involvement of teaching staff in
research, we also have a strong
community of full-time
researchers, whose work is often
cutting-edge. Again, this helps to
ensure that the information being
communicated through teaching
is extremely progressive.
A MULTI-DISCIPLINARYAPPROACH TORESEARCH HELPS US
SHARE KNOWLEDGEAND FIND SOLUTIONS
Multi-disciplinary research is an
increasingly important element
which underpins the work of the
institution. This approach is
designed to bring together
people from different specialisms
and a range of departments to
work together on specific
projects. Most of our research
now involves collaborations with
academics from other
universities (throughout the UK

communications, research,
consultancy, facilitation oflearning in organisations,
managing and facilitating change
and the psychology of leadership
coaching and decision-making.
There is also a thesis that
completes the doctoral studies
at SCQF level 12. Unlike a PhD,
which requires the submission
of a single thesis, a Professional
Doctorate is awarded for a
portfolio of professional work,
which would include evidence
of accomplishment in each
module taken, as well as
submission of the thesis.
There are a variety of entry
routes to Professional
Doctorates, with students
entering with an undergraduate
degree taking longer to gain their
doctorate than students entering
with a PgDip or Masters degree.
Students entering with an
undergraduate degree would
normally complete masters

Professional Doctorate can beachieved within three years on

As a professional, you may wish
to develop your skills in yourparticular area after gaining
an initial qualification. At QMU,
we offer a number of continuing
professional development (CPD)
opportunities which are designed
to keep you up-to-date with all
the latest training in your field.
These include tailored short
courses in the form of accredited
modules that are offered as face-
to-face courses, paper-based
distance learning courses or
e-learning. Some are also
described as blended, in thatthey will have a face-to-face
session at the beginning of the
course, followed by paper
or web-based materials.
You do not have to sign up
for a degree programme to
undertake CPD courses as you
can do all these short courses
as a matriculated associate
undergraduate or postgraduate
student. As an associate student
you have the same access to
all of QMU student learning and
information technology services,as well as support from the
course co-ordinators and
lecturers. This means that
for nurses and allied health
professionals you are able to
meet professional requirements
for maintaining your competence
as a registered practitioner.
If you have completed your
CPD course and you thendecide that you would like
to continue towards a degree
or postgraduate qualification
as an advanced practitioner then
the credit you have gained as
an associate student may count
towards a named qualification.
This will depend on the nature
of the award and which CPD
course you have undertaken.
Most CPD modules are also
available as elective modules
within undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes.
For further details please contactthe appropriate programme
leader, indicated on the relevant
course page.
LIFELONG LEARNING
On a personal basis, you may
wish to study something youve

a number of short courses

background in the subject.

you will not receive a formal
qualification, but you will receivea certificate of attendance.
Module fees may vary according
to the length of the short course
and to the delivery mode. In
other words some modules may
be more expensive depending
on the type of learning materials,
such as e-learning. Details
of fees can be found onour website at
www.qmu.ac.uk/registry/fees_

the Admissions Office on

KEEPING IN TOUCH
AFTER GRADUATIONAt QMU we pride ourselves on
being a close-knit community.
The Development and Alumni
Relations Office has two
main roles.
The first is to ensure your
relationship with QMU continues
long after you graduate. The
Development and Alumni Team
will keep you in touch with
QMU through our QM News
magazine, which is sent
worldwide to over 15,000 former
students and supporters twice ayear and through the interactive
alumni section of the website.
We support graduates wishing
to organise class reunions, by
providing help in contacting
former classmates as we
appreciate that over time
you can lose contact.
Former students can also keep
in touch with their lecturers, offer
up their services as a mentor to
younger graduates, or find an
experienced graduate to help
them launch their career. Thewebsite can be used to post
class notes for publication in the
QM News magazine, and we
now have a range of exclusive
offers for our online community.
The Development and Alumni
Relations Office is also activein securing support for special
projects which are not covered
by our core funding. This
includes securing funds from a
variety of individual and corporate
benefactors, to support
scholarships, placements and
prizes for our current students.
When you become a QMU
graduate you will join an
extended family of fellow alumni
(former students) who are based
all around the world. Our
students and graduates areQMUs greatest assets. We are
proud of all you achieve, both
during your time here, and in the
years beyond. Wherever you are
in the world, and whatever you
end up doing, we want to keep
in touch with you and help
ensure your memories of
QMU last a lifetime.

Executive Masters Degree
in International Planned Events 43
Since leaving school, I have done a number of things: a BA (Hons)
in English Literature with History of Art, working in a private gallery ,
Photographic & Licensing Manager, National Galleries of Scotland
and courses in locations and arts management, marketing, intellectual
property rights, digitisation project management. Currently, I work as
Commercial Development Officer for the City of Edinburgh Council,
Culture & Leisure division.
I was looking for a further qualification that combined business studies
and management within the arts sector. Most postgraduate courses
for museums professionals were for curators, archivists, librarians
or marketers, so I decided to go for an MBA. QMU seemed to offer
the only course that combined the cultural and business aspects,
familiarity with the service industries and the public sector.
Im finding the course good and I have been able to apply what I am
learning to my needs. I have studied a wide variety of modules some
requiring more academic thinking than others. Each module has been
challenging in its own way and I have had to be disciplined. The course
has made me realise that I actually know and understand more than
I thought I did, which has added to my confidence. The thought of
Finance and Accounting terrified me, but I actually passed in the end.
I have enjoyed the learning process, but I think you get out of it what
you are prepared to put in. Having experience of working and managing
definitely helps especially on the more practical modules such as
Marketing, Operational and Strategic Management (the best bit!).
One of the best things about the course has been the opportunity to meet
lots of new people from a wide range of ages, backgrounds, experience
and countries (India, Bangladesh, China, Korea and Taiwan and Brazil).
Whilst studying, I have been doing some voluntary work for a charity and
took up a placement with a project to unite public and private sectors in
education, tourism and economic development in promoting Edinburgh,
led by the City Council. I think its been useful to continue working whilst
studying, even if only on a part-time or temporary basis. This MBA will
certainly be useful if I go back to working in museums, but has also
made me think about doing further research. It has also equipped me to
manage within a less-specific sector as I have increased my transferrable
knowledge and skills. I do hope to get a job in museum management
following my course, but opportunities are limited, as are higher earnings.
I may move to consultancy work, as this would offer flexibility and
different experiences as well as the ability to use my strategic planning
and operational experience. I will also consider moving into another area
of the arts, possibly film.
I have enjoyed undertaking research on different aspects of management
during my course, so further research and study is also an option.
Perhaps I can combine a couple of the options. I plan to further my
studies to PhD level, although at this moment I am undecided what
subject to study and where I will see where my new job takes me.
