PROGRAM OF SPEAKERS

Keynote Address 1 - Bronwyn Hession: “The Australian Curriculum: Economics and Business”Bronwyn is currently President of Business Educators' Australasia and a Director of Economics and Business Educators NSW. Bronwyn was a member of the initial ACARA Advisory Group for the development of the Australian Curriculum in Economics and Business, and a critical friend throughout the curriculum development process. Bronwyn’s current substantive position is Inspector, Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards, NSW.

In this presentation Bronwyn will explore some of the key challenges for curriculum writers and teachers in implementing this curriculum to ensure that the unique and powerful contribution of Economics and Business curriculum to general education can be realised for the benefit of all students.

Keynote Address 2 - Michael Kidd:Michael is Head of School of Economics and Finance at Queensland University of Technology, a Director of the Economics Society and a member of the QETA Management CommitteeThis presentation will present an overview of evidence on the impact of gender in the classroom plus some preliminary empirical results.

Workshop 1 - Creating Your Teaching Courses For iPads Using iTunes UMajda Benzenatti, St. Hilda’s School, Southport

This workshop will demonstrate to teachers how to create a course using Safari and getting it displayed using iTunes U app for iPads. The focus of the workshop is to go through the steps of creating a course using iTunes U Course Manager and sharing it with students and peers. The App enables students to easily access the course in and out of the classroom using mobile technology. Through using iTunes U Course Manager, teachers are able to cater to all student learning styles and needs. Also, all kind of materials can be imported to the course: Word documents, PDFs, MP3s, MP4s etc. So instead of dragging folders, USBs or external hard drives to class to access teaching material, well delegates will have them all in the course in the iPad!Why not bring along your electronic files ( &your Apple ID) with you to the workshop and enjoy the experience of taking a course with you home?

Workshop 2 - What Economics is in the 5-10 Economics and Business Curriculum?Doug CaveThis workshop will explore what Economic content (and skills) are covered in each year of the Australian Curriculum. Participants will examine the Curriculum Document for knowledge/topics to be taught, and consider how this could be implemented.

Workshop 3 - Teaching the Core Unit Market and Models to Gen YAnthony Florido, Cannon Hill Anglican CollegeThis presentation will look at scoping the unit/ teaching resources  focusing on contemporary media for teachers/students,  assessment prep and assessment test type for this unit.

Workshop 4 - Teaching Using ICT in the Economics ClassroomThis is a two-hour workshop covering Workshop Sessions B and C. Sharon Armstrong, Nazareth College, MelbourneParticipants in this workshop will learn how to:“Get your students to create their own App”. (android and iPhone). During this workshop participants will learn how to make their own App for free and put it on to their phone. Create your own WIKI.  During this workshop participants will learn how to make their own WIKI. A Wiki is a website that everyone can contribute to, this enables you to collaborate with teachers around the world teaching the same topics as you!Participants should come with digital resources that they wish to upload onto their WIKI.If there is time we will look at creating our own digital cartoons.

Workshop 5 - Economics Assessment - scaffolding for success!

Often students do not know how to begin their assessment research tasks. This session will explore the need to scaffold all assessment items by providing a clear definition of the key task verb, such as “compare’, recommend’ or ‘analyse’ and giving the students the right thinking tool and language so that all students will succeed. This practical and hand-on session will closely examine at least two commonly used task verbs in Senior Economics and the matching sentence starters that students could use for their assignment. 

Workshop 6 - Action Research in Economics Kate Stevenson and Gregory Howes, Brisbane Grammar SchoolThis workshop will examine an Action Research project which investigated how designing infographics can promote creativity in responding to an economic problem.  (An infographic is a visual representation of information, requiring creative problem-solving to synthesise data and engage an audience.)Kate has created some teaching materials and found some resources that she will be happy to share.

Workshop 7 - Teaching Using ICT in the Economics ClassroomThis is a two-hour workshop covering Workshop Sessions B and C. Workshop 7 cannot be selected unless Workshop 4 ha s also been chosen.Sharon Armstrong, Nazareth College, MelbourneParticipants in this workshop will learn how to:i. Make their own WIKI (collaborative website)ii. Create their own app using The app builderIt will be a hands-on workshop where participants will develop some learning materials for use in the economics Classroom

Workshop 8 - Developing a Curriculum for Economics and Business Glenys Goodingham, Siena Catholic College, Sippy DownsGlenys will consider how to develop a curriculum for Years 8-10 using the Draft Economics and Business Curriculum from ACARA.

Workshop 9 - Teaching Environmental EconomicsRon Hanmer, Cavendish Road State High School and Doug Cave, QETA Life Member.This session will focus on the elective unit “Environmental Economics” and will offer participants some ideas about research logs, scaffolding for teaching referencing etc as well as some on-line teaching materials.
