What is
5s...????? 5s is a workplace
organisation methodology that uses a list of five Japanese words that are seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu and shitsuke.
Seiri (Sorting) Keep the necessary things
in work area. Dispose or keep the less
frequently used items in a distanct storage area.
Discard unnecessary items. The idea is to ensure that
everything left at the workplace is related to work.
Seiton (Straighten) Arranging in proper
order. Systematic arrangement
for the most efficient and effective retrieval.
This step is all about putting things to its assigned place so that it can be accessed easily and quickly.
Seiso (Shine) It refers to systematic
cleaning. Create a spotless workplace. Sweep, dust, polish and
paint. There should be a place for
everything and everything should be in its place.
The place for each item should be clearly labelled or demarcated.
Seiso (Shine) contd.
Seiketsu (Standardize) Generate a maintenance system for the first 3 S’s.
Develop procedure, schedules and practices.
Continue to access the use and disposal of items.
Regularly audit using checklists and measures of housekeeping.
Real challenges to keep it clean.
Shitsuke (Sustain) Develop an attitude to
maintain the other 4S. Create a discipline in
whatever you are doing. Driving force behind all
5S. Make it a way of life. Part of health and safety. Involve the whole work
force.

Recommendations and implementations Keep the useful and useless items separately.
Below the useful and the useless are separated from each other
Useful items should be kept in order

Cleanliness is of top priority
The cleaner a workplce is, the better work could be done there
