Why do we need a Railway in Qatar?

QRC Core Presentation 24 May 2011 2

The aim is to transform Qatar into a world class economy by 2030, capable of sustaining its own

development and providing for a high standard of living for all of its people for generations to come.

Seeking a comprehensive urban development plan for Qatar that adopts a sustainable policy with regard to urban expansion and population distribution.

Establish a high quality and integrated public transport network that results in a modal shift from private motor vehicles to public transport across Qatar , whilst recognising the right and desire of Qatari’s to transport choice.

Rapid rises in disposable incomes have lead to exponential growth in car ownership and with it, significant increases in road accidents and traffic congestion at peak times. Therefore, having a railway system will decrease the accident rates and traffic congestion and pollution.

Introduction to the Qatar Integrated Railway Project (QIRP)

Establish an Attractive, Safe and Highly Sophisticated Railway System within Qatar and connect the State of Qatar to the Kingdoms of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia

The Railway Network will comprise four Metro Lines and High-Speed Long Distance Passenger Lines and Freight Lines

One of the Key Drivers is the Provision of the Railway Services for the FIFA 2022 World Cup

The QIRP Budget is projected to be approx. QAR 130 billion

The Railway System needed for the World Cup will be operational by 2020; the Complete Railway System will be in place in 2026

Page 35: Qatar rail - Geoff Mee presentation

Procurement Strategy developed by QRC

The Procurement Strategy is based on QRC Guidelines: Major goal is to ensure a cost-effective, on-time and right quality procurement of railway

lines, structural engineering works and services, passenger transport facilities and materials

Time is of the essence

Balance risks between contractors and QRC, keeping in mind what the market can accept

and deliver

Foster a partnership between Qatari and International players

Procurement Strategy 24 May 2011 35

Page 36: Qatar rail - Geoff Mee presentation

The QIRP Project includes three railway systems

• Metro, 4 lines

• Long Distance Passenger • High Speed to Al Khor, Ras Laffan, Al Shamal and Dukhan • Very High Speed to Bahrain through Causeway

• Freight lines connecting industrial areas of Qatar (Mesaieed Port,

Ras Laffan, Dukhan) and KSA Network

This very ambitious programme with plenty of challenges (quality, time scale, work in urban congested environment, logistics, etc.)

needs strong partners

QRC is looking forward to team up with internationally renowned companies as well as local entities to deliver this railway to Qatar !
