QAR Description Stands for Question Answer Relationship A strategy for text comprehension Requires students to think about where
they find their answers Using this strategy, students examine
the relationship between the question, the text to which it refers, and to the background knowledge and information.
Purposes Enhances students’ ability to answer
comprehension questions. Helps the students to think critically
about where they find answers and how they should be thinking about specific questions.
Allows students to think critically about questions so that they are better equipped to answer them.
QAR Format Four categories where answers can be
found: In the Text
Think and Search Right There
In My Head Author and You On my own
In the Text: Think and Search The answer is in the text, but the words
used in the question and those used for the answer are not in the same sentence. You need to think about different parts of the text and how ideas can be put together before you answer the question.
In the Text: Right There The answer is not in the text. The words
used in the question and the words used for the answer can usually be found in the same sentence.
In My Head: Author and You The answer is not in the text. You need
to think about what you know, what the author says, and how they fit together.
In my Head: On My Own The text got you thinking, but the
answer is inside your head. The author can’t help you much. So think about the question, and use what you know already to answer it.
Practicing QAR Flip your paper to the QAR worksheet
and turn to page 81 in your textbook. Work quietly by yourself for four
minutes. When finished, find a group of 4-5.
Use the QAR chart to help you answer the questions.

Three Thing to Remember1. QAR is a great way for students to engage
in the text and allows them to think critically.
2. QAR helps students to build a foundation for how to answer questions in the future.
3. QAR is a useful strategy that helps students to think about how they should answer questions. It allows them to organize their thoughts and use time more efficiently.
