DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Prophecy is located on Wilmer Neck, 5 1/2 miles
north of Centreville. It faces northwest, opposite
Bookers Wharf Road. The house is a long gambrel roof
frame dwelling composed of two sections, the southern
half being the earliest and the northern section
built around 1870. Both sections were remodled/
restored between 1973 and 1979.
The earlier part of the house consists of a
32' x 18' symmetrical frame dwelling with central
entrance flanked by two windows with 6/6 sash.
On the gambrel roof, there are two dormer windows
the same size as below, with shed roofs. Two brick
chimneys pierce the apex of the roof within the 32'
dimension. Its southwest gable is plain other' than
the exposed brick chimney/fireplace back to the
height of the second story. The southeast facade of
this section is identical to the front.
North of the earlier section is the 1870 section,
nearly equal in size to the first. The fenestration
consists of two windows on the northern end with an
entrance nearest the old section. Two dormers are
symmetrically placed on the roof. Aocovered porch
protects the entrance.

7.1 DESCRIPTION
(;JA-78
A third chimney pierces the roof within the northeast
-=gahle. The gable has an exposed chimney back with
~nter1ocking ~lazed diamonds. On the second story are
two 4-pane casements. On the southeast side of this
section is a 12' shed addition containing a 10' enclosed
entry and the rest screened porch, all of which was added
in the 1970•s.
'rhe interior plan consists of a "hall and parlor"
in the oldest section and a stair halli "keeping room"
-and kitchen in the 18 70 section. A back entry and
lavatory are located in the leanto.
Separating the hall and parlor is the original
beaded board partition. The "parlor" mantel, cupboard
and trim are original to the house. In the hall, the
stair and closet doors are original, but the mantel and
cupboard werE: removed from the dining room of the Cloug_h
House near Price. The latter is very similar to the
-0riginal worke Both rooms have exposed beaded ceiling
joists.
-On the second story, the floor plan consists of a
passage and small chamber above the "hall", and a large
bedroom above the "pnrlor". An original fireplace
remains in the large bedroom. All of the interior
partitions of thiR section are vertical beaded boards.

7.2 DESCRIPTION
QA-'78
The frame of the earlier part of the house has
gun-stock corner posts, one of three known ex~mples on
the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The roof framing is
typical of eighteenth and early nineteenth century con~
struction of the-upper shore, i:e· ·the ceiling joints
and lower slope of the rafters are mortise, tenon and
pinned together. The upper rafters are toe nailed into
a board plate and mortise tenon and pinned at the apex~
From the restoration, a part of an earli~r tie beam
surfaced. This item suggests the house originally had
an 11 A" roof. Also found during the restoration was the
lower horizontal member of an exterior balustrade
(copied on the porches) and a wooden tombstone, an example
known to have been used by the Quakers. It has been
suggested that this structure was the late 17th Century
Quaker Meeting House, known to have existed on this
property.
The original plan and form of the 1870 wing were
altered during the restoration and before. It was built
as a two story structure with moderate 11 A" roof. The

the keeping room, it appeared to have had a dirt or

around the turn of this century. A basement exists only
