WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION(PUBLISHER) MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

Condé Nast is a mass media company headquartered at One World Trade Center in New York City. It was founded in 1909 by Condé Montrose Nast and is now one of the biggest publishing company in the world. The company attracts more than 164 million consumers across its 20 print and digital media brands including GQ, Vogue and Wired. They publish different genres of magazines including technology, home, food and their strongest one being fashion. They do not publish any music magazine so my magazine would be one of the first if they did publish it. I believe they may consider my magazine as their magazine and my magazine have a similar type of style – they both have that independent magazine feeling as they often challenge typical structure of magazine designs. However, I think I am aiming to high by having a big firm as a proposition.

InterMedia Partners is a private firm that focuses on the media industry across all platforms including television, radio, publishing and marketing. It was founded in 2005 in New York and some of their notable investments are Universal Sports, Control Room, Aspire, BlackBook Media, Sportsman Channel, Cinelatino, Soul Train Holdings and finally, Vibe. After shutting down production in Summer 2009, Vibe was purchased by InternMedia and is now globally sold. InterMedia is a private firm so it would be easier to negotiate a deal with them while getting the magazine as out there as possible. It is a popular hip hop magazine and so I thought it would be strategically if my magazine was published by a firm with experience in the genre. I would say that my magazine is independent but still has similar aspect to Vibe– design and content wise.

Harris Publications was founded in 1985 by Stanley R. Harris who had been in the magazine publishing business since the late 1950s. They publish over 75 titles including Juicy, Dog News, 0-60, Exercise & Health, Celebrity Hairstyles and many more. In August 1997, Harris Publications released the first issue of XXL with feature rappers Jay-Z and Master P on the double page spread. XXL is a hip hop magazine thus why I think Harris Publication would be the best publisher for my magazine as they already have my target audience. They also have a large mass audience relatively to a more independent company like Inter Media, allowing me to expand my audience as much as I can. Harris Publications is based in US which has a large audience for hip hop, especially because a large majority of the music is produced there so I would prefer this route to publish my content.
