Station in 1963 marks a significant

decline in the suburbs population

Needing no introduction, Teage Ezard has been a culinary celebration in this country long before ‘celebrity chefs’ were even invented.

Propelled onto the restauranteur podium with his highly successful Melbourne establishments, Ezard and Gingerboy, Master Ezard has more hats than the Melbourne Cup. Teage Ezard is now bringing a little bit of ‘Mel-Berlin’ to Sydney in the form of BLACK by ezard at The Star.

“Opening BLACK by ezard presented a wonderful opportunity to create a new restaurant concept within a world-class venue, The Star. It has been an exciting challenge to create an offer that’s so different to my other restaurants, which focus on Asian cuisine” comments Ezard.

Ezard’s new venture serves up a bold and boundary-breaking menu; a melting pot of global influences interpreted on a local plate.

“Our provocative and challenging dishes are influenced by great American grills and contemporary Europe. Traditional favourites are turned upside-down and reinterpreted with more edge,” says Ezard.

The interior design is also more Sydney-centric. Designed by Paul Kelly, the space has an international feel with elegant

booth seating overlooking some of the best views this side of the bay.

“It’s moody, sophisticated and more than a little bit glamorous. It features a combination of wood, copper, leather, a beautiful use of stone and marble and of course—those incredible Sydney Harbour views!” exclaims Ezard.

If Ezard was a colour he would be BLACK; a manifestation of passion and dark complexity that only comes from honing his craft through an endless drive for perfection.

It’s hard to keep up with Sydney’s fast, fickle restaurant scene. Ezard’s fervour for service and thirst for local innovation makes sure he stays ahead. “I love working with the local farmers who are so passionate about their products and keeping in line with the seasonal changes,” he says.

The constantly evolving, contemporary grill is not only about the protein. The seasonal produce is complimented by a unique wine offering sourced predominately from the rising US wine regions (something progressive again for Sydneysiders).

Ferries, trains, buses are all interconnected with tickets you can buy to transfer from one to another to get around town cheaply.

Taxis are available when the yellow light is on and change over time is at 3pm and 3am when flagging one down is a little trickier.

Metro Light Rail links Central Station quickly and easily with the great list of Pyrmont/Ultimo destinations including Powerhouse Museum, Pyrmont Bay, The Star and the iconic Sydney Fish Market. Tickets are available from the friendly conductors on-board each tram and Day Passes with unlimited travel are prices from $9. Day services run every 10–15 minutes, overnight service every 30 minutes. Services from Central to The Star run 24 hours a day. For more info go to metrolightrail.com.au

Tax Refund for Travellers

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is charged in Australia—tourists can claim back the 10 per cent tax at the airport on purchases over $300 made in one store. Ask for the Tourist Refund Scheme at Sydney airport.

If you are happy with the service in cafés and restaurants, you can add a voluntary extra 10 per cent of the bill as a tip. Tipping is not compulsory in Australia.
