National Recycling Week

As Australia continues to deal with the ramifications of China refusing to accept our waste plastic, this National Recycling Week (12-18 November) offers an opportunity for us to support our local recycling industry. It will also assist in diverting 300,000 tonnes of soft plastic from landfill every year.

At Close the Loop our promise of zero waste to landfill is at the heart of everything we do. For 17 years we have been at the fore-front of building Australia’s circular economy, using recycled materials to not just create new, but better products.

In partnership with PlanetArk we have operated the world’s most successful volunteer product stewardship program in ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’. And this year we created TonerPlas – an asphalt additive that contains the equivalent of 530,000 recycled plastic bags and toner from more than 12,000 recycled cartridges in every 1km stretch of two-lane road. TonerPlas doesn’t just divert waste plastic from landfill, it creates a better-quality road and has a 65 percent increase in fatigue life meaning longer lasting roads than traditional asphalt. In conjunction with Downer, roads with the TonerPlas additive have already been laid in Melbourne and Sydney.

To turn your waste into a superior road, drop your soft plastics off at any RedCycle collection point while used printer cartridges can be returned at over 4,000 public collection points and over 40,000 workplaces throughout Australia. Become a circular economy champion by returning your full bags back to us.

You can also get involved in a number of activities this National Recycling Week, including: Host a Swap Party – Get your friends together to swap books, clothes and more. Buy It Back Day – A day for the community to celebrate National Recycling Week by purchasing something second hand or buying a product made from recycled materials. Learn about recycling: Find out what you can and can’t recycle in your kerbside bin. Attend an event: There are plenty of local events to choose from.

Did You Know?

You can drop off your printer cartridges, old batteries and mobile phones for recycling here at Pyramid Hill Neighbourhood House.

Seniors Notes On Friday the 9th of November, President Trevor welcomed all to the luncheon. Trevor then presented our long time member Peg

Cameron with a Life Membership Certificate in appreciation for all the hard work Peg has done for our club. Well done Peg!

We all enjoyed a lovely lunch of assorted cold meats and salads. Then it was time for the raffles to be drawn, most people won

something. Mabel Leed won the Lucky Door Prize.

No one had any luck at cards in Cohuna, Trevor won Euchre at Kerang. Bingo was played for a short time, with Most Wins going to

Margaret Smith with 5 and Bruce and Ken had 3 each.

Q. Why did the man put the

cupcake in the freezer?

A. Because his wife told him to ice

it!

Pyramid Hill Lawn Bowling Club News

Midweek Pennant: Both Divisions played away from home and achieved some satisfying results.

Division 1: A quick glance around the venue at Barham Services would suggest that the crowd was a tad under the 83,000 that fronted up for the running of the Melbourne Cup at Flemington. It’s a little hard to fathom the reason given that the weather was quite idyllic and certainly the field was not tested with downpours of rain. Fittingly, the atmosphere was electric with excitement and anticipation as the Pyramid players were long odds against the District favourites sitting on top of the ladder. After a brief warm up and parade of the course the match got under way with little doubt that the legs on show and the hats strategically angled more than paralleled anything flouted on Oaks Day. After many furlongs covered the field was bunched for the home run. As predicted by the punters, it was a day for the favourites to get their noses in front and they proved to be the better stayers. Marie S., Jan, Nola and Lorraine F crossed the line in third place finishing 21-29. Kate, Marg, Marie and Tony finished a close second after being slow out of the stalls and not being able to make any ground after the filling of the chaff bags before the home turn (22-28). Roma, Glenys, Jeanette and Bill applied great finishing pressure and could not be separated from their opponents in the photo finish. The judges had to award a 21-21 draw with not a horse’s breath between them. The payout tote saw Barham Services come away with more yay in their neigh to the extent of 14 shots but a result that showed we were well in the running.

Division 2: The Ladbroke’s award went to our Division 2 side who travelled down the highway to Kerang and came home with all the garlands of flowers and cups brimming over. But they did not find it an easy track and the winning circle was a tough barrier to break into. Lorraine D., Jenny, Glen and Rose surged to the front with little to spare (20-19) – the one shot win crowning them the best performers for the Hill on the day. Robyn, Dawn, Joe and George held on tenaciously and gave the judges at the winning post something to draw a line under as they followed the example of Roma’s crew and produced a drawn game (20-20). The 40 – 39 shot win sent the crowd into a frenzy and lifted them into fifth ladder position on equal points with Cohuna who are sitting fourth on the ladder. A few more oats in the chaff bag and they could well be looking at a finals series. Just when we are starting to hit our straps and find a bit of form, we now take a break, not to return until 28 th November when Division 1 will play Kerang Golf at home and Division 2 will host Leitchville.

60 & Over With the chief ariki across the sea in New Zealand possibly hunting kiwi instead of the elusive dead chook, Bill and Ray rounded up two substitute players, Ron and Reg to help make up their foursome. A trio of Rs (be careful how you say it!) – Ray, Ron and Reg was not enough to catapult them into the winning stakes. A description taken from the horse’s mouth was that they were “miserable” and nearly got their legs pulled from under them in one game. Taking heart, however, they ran mid-field in the other two games. The report stated that once the bowl approached the finishing line, it seemed to be very keen to get back to the stables and had little trouble finding its way into the ditch. Not to fret guys, as this little story tells it is not always a good thing to be in the lead. A jockey was riding the favourite at a race meeting, and was well ahead of the field. His horse rounded the final corner, when suddenly the jockey was hit on the head by a turkey and a string of sausages. He managed to keep control of his mount and pulled back into the lead, only to be struck by a box of Christmas crackers and a dozen mince pies as he started down the home straight. With great skill he managed to steer the horse to the front of the field once more when nearing the finishing line, he was struck on the head by a bottle of sherry and a Christmas pudding. Consequently, he succeeded in coming only second. He immediately went to the race stewards to complain that he had been seriously hampered.

Saturday Pennant Both Divisions 1 and 3 travelled to Barham this week but Division 1 ventured a few kilometres further interstate as they pulled up stops at Barham Sports, while Division 3 negotiated the bridge and road works to pull into Barham Services.

Division 1: It was a glorious day for bowling, no sign of a deluge, and the track was firm so there were no excuses to be found there. Could it be that the opposition were just too good?! A win may have been a hapless task but at least we all finished and no-one had to be euthanized. Beau and Lorraine showed great commitment fronting up at all as many would claim that a drive from Healesville to Barham was too big an ask, but not them! Beau still led his group to a neck and neck finish. Beau, Marie S., Nola and Graham were two down going into the last end but managed to muster a mighty surge of effort to claim four shots and claim the trophy by 2 in a thrilling conclusion (25-27). Fred (who possibly felt like getting out the whip but couldn’t be accused and score a ban for its over use), Marie N., Glenys and Charlie had their noses in front at the lunch break but came out too full of curried egg sandwiches instead of oats and lost ground to finish 17-26. Lionel, Jean, Wayne and Lorraine were always in the ball park but finished at canter pace 19-32. The overall total 63-83 meant that the only cross-counter thing we did was buy the drinks after the game.

Division 3: Due to a number of players being unavailable for selection, we recruited two substitute players from Barham Sports and were very grateful of their company and availability. Robyn, Esther (sub), Rose and Wayde got close to a win 24-27 and could almost smell the roses. Jan, Deanne, Tony and Joe did not have their best day out lagging mid-field and going down 19-33. Lor-raine, Betty (sub), Carmen and George had plenty of the field in front of them and could not make up the lost ground when the stakes were down 20-37. The final score 63-97 was definitely not a total that would stop the Nation and the Pyramid Hill players were left to commiserate their loss against a team that proved too strong. A week off to regroup and recharge the batteries. The next round is scheduled for 24th November with both Divisions hosting Gunbower.

Tournament Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the day a success. Special thanks to the catering ladies who excelled once again. A comment overheard from a visitor was to the effect that you could always depend on a good feed at Pyramid Hill. Thanks to Lionel for his organisational work and the Green Keeping team who had a fast track prepared. Barham Services were the only three game winner scoring 88 points so they took home the big prize. Lockington (glad to have you back on the greens Donnie) came in second place with 62 points and Cohuna Golf were the best last game winners. Special thanks also to Wayne who repeated the Ode as we took a break to remember and respect all those who have given service for us and our country through the various wars and peace keeping operations. We take for granted the freedom to go out and play bowls as we wish; if not for the sacrifices made by others things may well have been very different. Lest we forget.

Pools And Spas Need Safety Barriers

With the warmer weather at hand and Christmas ap-

proaching, I just want to take the opportunity to remind

residents about requirements for safety barriers around

swimming pools and spas. Safety barriers must be

constructed around all swimming pools and spas that can

hold more than 30cm (300mm) of water. This also

applies to inflatable and portable pools.

Drowning is the most common cause of preventable

death for children under five in Victoria, and pool

barriers can help save lives. A "safety barrier" is a fence,

wall, gate or screen, and includes gates, windows, locks,

latches, hinges and self-closing devices attached to

them.

Information regarding safety barrier requirements can be

found at the Victorian Building Authority’s website

www.vba.vic.gov.au/consumers/swimming-pools

A safety barrier must be completed before a swimming

pool or spa (or inflatable or portable pool) is filled with

water. Before construction of a safety barrier, a building

permit is required. A registered building practitioner

must carry out the work if it is more than $5,000

(including labour and materials). Council aims to educate

and assist owners/occupiers to help provide a safe

swimming environment. If you’re not sure about whether

you need a safety barrier or if you would like more

information, please contact Council’s Municipal Build-

ing Surveyor Greg Johnston on 5494 1200.

A Step Back In Time With The Historical Society

July 4, 1924 Wireless. This wonder of the present age, though as ancient as the universe in its undiscovered existence, is now becoming familiar and this district has it receiving sets. Mr E Spowart has for some time, experimented with a four valve set and has been very successful in its use. Signals sent out by ships at sea have been received, also music etc. from Australasian broadcasting stations, but he is the first experimenter in Victoria to tune in to Oaklands, California, from which station he has received music and voice waves twice a week for some time. Signals from Scandinavia, France and Germany are also common. Mr G Manley also has a set at Mincha. The latest is that installed at Mr L Ow-ens' residence where music, stories and reports of markets etc, are received and a large amount of entertainment enjoyed thereby. In Kerang Mr Arnoldt has given public demonstrations with loud speakers set up in the streets. The apparatus costs somewhere about £40, so there is every prospect of the next few years seeing the ariels set up at most farms and towns.

July 11, 1924 Wireless Mr E Spowart has during the last week picked up signals from a Tasmanian amateur, which, so far as is known, is the first time that Tasmanian messages have been received north of the Dividing Range, He has also received messages from Too-woomba, Queensland, in day light. The wireless waves are transmitted and received with much greater facility during the night than in the daylight, this is in the way of an achievement. He has now installed a loud speaker and continues to hear the Californian station's music and speeches. At the Mystic Park Hall on Monday evening a wireless concert was held, the program being broadcasted from Sydney.

July 25 1924 Wireless Mr G Manley, Mincha, has received signals from several South Australian stations and others very clearly, also KGO California. Mr E Spowart has received further daylight signals from Toowoomba, and the operator there has informed him that it the furthest daylight reception yet reported and asked him for photos of his apparatus. 4AE, Wireless Institute Queensland has been heard clearly on the loud speaker. Some very good items have been heard from Farmer's on the loud speaker, a trio by violin, cello and organ being especially good. Mr Spowart has taken out a dealer's licence and will give public demonstrations at an early date. Mr and Mrs Barrett visited his station and listened to KGO which was received so clearly that the American twang was noticeable. Dr and Mrs Triado also made a visit when the Program included a skirl on the bagpipes from 4YA, Dunedin, N.Z

November 28, 1924 Wireless Mr Ern Spowart, Licensed Radio Dealer, is prepared to supply your Wireless require-ments. Expert advice. Melbourne Prices. Demonstration by arrangement.

June 28, 1929 Southern Cross Messages Heard at Pyramid Hill Mr B G Thomas, a former telegraphist, on Tuesday night heard messages from the Southern Cross, which is now on its way to England. The messages, which were received plainly, were got on a two-valve short wave set. The messages read; 8.5 Speed 78 knots. 8.7 : to Flight Lieut Jas Moir, R.A.A.F, Richmond—Thanks for advice re route, Jim, also thank Harold for whirl wind book Cheerio.— Ulm. 8.8,: To Pres, Geo Hartman and members of the Australian Flying Corps, Sydney. Many thanks for your loyal support throughout. Will do our best. (Signed Smithie, Chas, Litc, Mac. To Morton, care Union Oil,.Sydney. Hope you have a good time at the ball tonight. Think of us up here in the cold, won‘t you. Kind regards from Mac. 8.25: See you all later. 3.M.Z.A.B,
