Over the next few weeks: We will be using three cases to explore thecontribution that forensic psychology makesto the criminal justice system Consider the investigation, the courts and theprison aspects of forensic psychology using aproblem-based learning format, taughtsessions and guest lectures Two written submissions: Expert report Information booklet for a professional criminaljustice audience 3. Module Structure 9.10-11.30 Some sessions will take up the whole 2 hourswith a mixture of lectures and activities Some sessions will have a lecture from 9.10-10.20 followed by an opportunity to work onyour assignments with help from me or Jody Some of these lectures will be guest lectures 4. Set book Howitt, D., (2011), Introduction to forensicand criminal psychology. (4th Edn) Harlow:Pearson Education Ltd. There are two copies in seven-day loan andtwo copies in short loan (shelfmark364.3/HOW for both) 5. Moodle Some topics we will cover in lectures Some topics we wont but you might finduseful or that are relevant to the assignments Have an explore of the Moodle pages If you find a resource e.g. webpage; blog etc.that you think is useful, let me know and Illput up a link Confused at any point, just contact me 6. Assessments:Expert Report28 September 2012 7. Expert report (due Monday 5 November2012, 12noon) marked by Julie Information booklet (due Friday 14 December2012, 12noon) marked by Jody 8. Expert reports Case information Expert opinion based on case information More like an essay than the informationbooklet assignment but very specific to thecase given 3 choices (only choose 1) Hostage descriptions False confession? Sex offender risk assessment 9. So what do I do? READ Look at all three cases and decide which youlike best First two paragraphs outline your task Academic piece of work Back up points with reference to the literature 10. So what do I do? (cont) Look at the case Read the relevant literature What points can I make about the case basedon what I know from the literature. Do/look at the activities on Moodle Look at the previous examples (I will bringthem to the lecture and at other times theywill be with Chris) 11. The Write Up Professional competence (you can make this up) but rememberto make this relevant to the case e.g. if you are doing a report oneyewitness testimony are you likely to work in a prisonconversely is you are doing a report on sex offender riskassessment are you likely to be an academic expert ineyewitness testimony? What qualifications and experience willyou need? Overview of the main issues to do with this particular case, inyour opinion (this can be bullet points) Discussion of these issues with reference to the literature Recommendations to the police/court/parole board about thedescriptions/confession/risk List of references (not included in word count) Glossary (optional, not included in word count) 12. Headings? Up to you what headings you use, but you should useheadings as this is a report not an essay. Possible headings: Contents page (useful to include as it will allow the police to easily find their way to relevant information) Competency Information Provided Overview of issues Discussion of issues Recommendations References 13. Audience Who is your audience? Presentation? What type of language? Spelling & grammar? Jargon? Opinion based upon evidence 14. Marking Criteria Identification of issues Understanding of literature What literature used e.g. journal articles v.websites Critical evaluation Recommendations Structure & presentation Referencing 15. Draft outline You can submit a draft outline of your reportto me See Moodle for what should be in this outline Draft outline submission date: 24 October2012 16. Submission 2000 words (no 10% over!) Use the internet and the available resources toanswer the following questions: What is forensic psychology? What is not forensic psychology How do you become a forensic psychologist? Where might you find forensic psychologists? What do forensic psychologists actually do? Use your wiki to put up some answers to thesequestions (do not simply cut and paste from the BPSwebsite) Julie will take your answers and compile an ebook forthe module This will help you with the professional competenceaspect of the expert report
