• Box office is along with the counter outside the main lobby.

This space is also meant for people to stand and watch the

movie trailers. The box office which face the

main corridor attracts the people

moving through the mall. `

• Ticket counter faces the corridor space of the mall. This prevents from giving long queue tracks and waiting spaces near that.

There is no separate lobby near the ticket counter

• The main lobby of the complex is slightly inset and the counters face the corridor bringing in notice of the people in the main stream circulation.

•The waiting lounge is provide only within the theatre lobby. •This sometimes creates crowd near the ticket counter during the peak hours.

• The two supporting columns in the main lobby space are cladded with tiles.

• Column near the food court brings obstruction for free circulation during peak times.

•The area near the food counter is lit up with warm golden yellow lights and red. •Seating is not provided near the counters. It is only meant for quick take away .

•Near the food counter adjacent to waiting lobby, queue tracks are also provided for handling the crowd easily.•Cinema posters clad the columns near the counters.•Every vertical space is used to display posters or screens showing movie trailers.

• The staff entry is through a narrow corridor adjacent to the food counter and is restricted for outsiders. •There is view towards this alley from the waiting area.

•Maximum degree of circulation

•The corridor towards exit is a blend of white, pink and other shade and tints of red giving a pleasant mood different from that of other spaces. •Use of light colours here makes the space feel more wide.

•The smooth white and pink walls are lit up with pale yellow lights at the center of the corridor giving a different shade.

•There are only four screens inside the complex.•Each of the screen is in a higher level than the main entry level.•The entries to the four screens which opens into stairs are from the common foyer which further leads to the toilets and washrooms.

•The lighting in the foyer is again warm with yellow and white. •The doors to the screens are of red with the respected number of door laid in pattern on them.•Each door is 2 m wide.

•The wall plaster itself forms the main finish in the interior. To define certain spaces, the lights there are made to be white against the yellow back ground.

•The main foyer directly views to a mirror and after the entries to the screen diverts into two corridors leading to the washrooms for ladies and gents respectively.• so there is minimum circulation to the washrooms without creating a crowd in the foyer during peak hours.•The corridors are placed such that the people of shot term waiting lounge are not encouraged there. It is meant for the people watching the movie.

•The exits are common for two theatres each. So the doors open to the corridor and moves to the main exit.

ACCESS:

•Access to the cinemas is from second floor.•Exclusive entry elevators from outside for accessing the cinemas.


•Exit is through the third floor.•Projector room comes in fourth floor.•A direct exit to the basement parking is provided.•Lulu Mall has a parking space that can accommodate 3500 vehicles.•Wheel chair access: From third floor through lifts from the parking areas.


• Within the third floor, PVR is placed at a corner adjacent to the courtyard itself making us feel that space to be more spacious.

• The placement at the dead end takes in the lobby outside also to be the PVR lobby during peak hours.

• This lobby with a quick tix , ticket counters , etc. act as a buffer zone between the outside and the exclusive lobby of theatre.

• Towards the quick tix the colours seem to be more warm. This lobby may spill out people during peak hours to outside due to insufficient space for a long queue.

The buffer zone opens into a large, spacious theatre lobby with food counters , informal seating or people etc . This space is meant to entertain and to relax the people with tickets waiting to enter for next show. After the tight space for security check the space feels to be more larger.

• The colour scheme of the lobby which is just outside the ticket lobby is neutral with enough day lighting from the highlight at the courtyard.

• Further, a quick transition is brought in the colour scheme while we step into the main lobby near ticket counter. The colours are yellow, brown , off white etc which bring in an elegant mood.

The ticket counter is about 6 meters long with 4 queue tracks.The counter outstands the other interior fixtures by its colour of red and white. It is like an inset made in a whole mass at entrance itself.

Accent lighting near the ceiling and wall panels highlights the demarcations. Ambient lighting provided by lamps are kept in niches on ceilings.

• Quick tix is a facility offered by the PVR movies here. It provides a quick glance about he currently running movies in the theatres and also displays trailers of he new movies.

• To avoid people hanging out for a long time in this small lobby, seating is not provided here.

• The colour scheme is made warm, so that people cannot stand there for long.

• The screens are all together placed in a niche so that they don’t protrude into the lobby space . But during peak hours, the lobby space may be congested due the queue at the ticket counter meeting the people viewing at the quick tix.

• The space is organized such that anyone who enters the lobby outside sees the baggage counter so that people are devoid of luggage even when they enter the buffer zone.

• The staff entry is hidden just adjacent to that by the wall projections at baggage counter.

• The wider theatre lobby further opens through nine large doors to the respective screens.

• Towards the doors the colour is made to be more neutral to avoid a sudden change into darkness inside the movie theatre.

The lobby is decorated in the interior with veneers and wood. Vitrified tiles and kadappa stones are used for flooring.

On ceiling separate false ceiling like panels are kept with inlaid yellow lighting in circular forms. The light is inset so that only diffused high intensity light illuminates the area.

Natural lighting is not at all provided.

• Entries to the movie theatres face the main lobby making it easy for the people waiting in the central seating to view the crowd at the entry.

• The rear wall of the first theatre forms the screen space for the quick tix at its behind.

• Each path towards the theatre opens into a lobby space in front of which is the screen.

• The colour scheme changes to more neutral in the pathway leading to the theatre to reduce the effect of sudden transition to a darker space.

• The plaster finish is smooth everywhere making the space feel larger.

The exclusive lobby before the theatre entry diverts into two aisles at the end near the theatre entry.: toilets for males and females.Long dark corridor which starts with a set of wash basins in the wash room.

The tiles laid in horizontal strips to define the corridor space. The toilets are placed such

that there is minimal circulation to the entry to theatres. So people need to move very less during the break between film .

Group D.- Assembly building shall include any building or part of a building exceeding 300 sq. meters of total floor area where people, congregate or gather for amusement, recreation, social, religious, patriotic, civil, travel and similar purposes such as theatres, motion picture houses or cinemas, assembly halls for educational dramatic or theoretical presentation, auditoriums wedding halls, community halls, exhibition halls, art galleries, museums libraries, skating rings, gymnasiums, congregation, dance halls, club rooms, passenger stations or transport terminals, recreation piers, amusement park structures, viewing stands, grand stands, stadia and circus tents.

THE KERALA CINEMAS (REGULATION) RULES, 1988

SITE• No site which would admit of storm water draining into it owing to its

level or location shall be used for the construction of the building unless arrangements are made to prevent effectively the flooding of the site either by draining into a storm watercourse, if one is available or by raising the level of the site to as adequate height by the deposit of layers of sound.

• No site wherein the soil and sub-soil would be so saturated with water that dampness of the floor and walls of the building would be inevitable, shall be used for the construction of the building unless a damp-proof course is provided in the basement of the building not higher than the level of the lowest floor and unless the flooring is made with a material approved by the licensing authority which would effectively prevent the dampness rising in the floor of the building.

• Every person who constructs, reconstructs, alters or adds to a building shall wherever the site is within 15 meters of any lank, reservoir, water course, river, fresh water channel or well carry out such measures as may be necessary of as Licensing Authority may direct for the purpose of preventing any contamination of or any risk of the drainage of building passing into such tank, reservoir, water course, river, fresh water channel or well.

EXITS• Each auditorium of the building shall be provided with an

adequate number of clearly indicated exits position and so. In the auditorium there shall be one exit from every tier, floor or gallery for every 250 persons accommodated . Every exit from the auditorium shall provide a clear opening space of not less than J .5 m in width.

• All exits from the auditorium shall be clearly indicated by the word 'EXIT' in block letters 1.75 mm high and shall be so displayed as to be clearly visible in the light as well as in the dark.

• No door which is required as exit shall be less than 1.5 m in clear width and not less than 2.1 m in clear height. The clear width shall be measured between the frame of a door.

• All exit doors shall open outwards and shall flush with outside of the walls or shall be so fitted that when open they do not obstruct any gangway, passage, corridor, stairway or landing.

• At no point shall any such passage or corridor be less than 1.5 m wide and it shall not diminish in width in the direction of the final place of exit.

• Passage giving access to staircases- (a) Width of a passage serving a single staircase shall not be less than the width of that staircase.

• The treads shall be not less than 30 cm wide and risers not more than 15 cm high.. The treads and risers of steps on each flight shall be of uniform width and height.

• Each flight shall have not more than 15 or less than three steps. No staircases shall have more than two flight of 15 steps without a turn and the width of the landing between such flights shall be at least the same as the width of the staircase. No staircase shall be less than 1.5 m in width which shall/cater/suffice the requirements for 100 persons and for every 15 persons the width shall be increased by 2.5 cm divided over the number of staircases provided.

• The farthest point in a cinema building from where the staircase affords access, shall not be more than 20 m distant from such staircase.

• The floors of all landings shall not be less than 15 cm thick.• The minimum headway of a passage if used by public under the

landings shall be not less than 2.1 m at any point between the top of the finished floor surface and the underside of the landing immediately above it.

• No stairways shall discharge into the passage or corridor against or across the direction of exit.

• Clear aisles not less than 1.2 mm width shall be formed at right angles to the line of seating in such number and manner that no seat shall be more than 3.8 m away from an aisle, measured in the line of seating.

• Where possible, gradients or inclined planes shall be used instead of steps but no gradient or inclined plane shall be steeper than 1 in 10.

• The treads shall not be less than 30 cm. and risers not more than 15 cm.

• No landing lobby, corridor or passage not being an internal passage between and or across rows of seats, intended for use as an exit shall be less than 1.5 m wide and there shall be no recesses or projections in the walls of such passages or corridors within 1.8 m of the ground.

• The size of the auditorium shall be fixed in relation to the number of audience to be seated. No part of the auditorium shall provide accommodation exclusive of passages at a scale higher than 0.45 C.M. per person.

• SEATING• The width of seats should be between 45 and 56 cm.• The back to back distance of chairs shall beat at least

85cm.• If extra comfort is required, higher spacing may be

provided which shall vary between 85 to 106cm. 95. • In all cases there shall be an intervening space of at

least 35 cm between the back of one seat and the front of the seat immediately behind measured between perpendiculars.

• The minimum height of the auditorium shall be 6m. The volume per person required to be provided should be 3.5 to 4.5 m per person.

• There shall be a minimum distance of 4 meters from the screen to the front edge of first row of seating.

• screen shall be fixed in such a way that its bottom shall not be at a height of more than 2.1 meters above the ground level of the front row of accommodation.

• The height between the soffit of any intermediate tier and the floor below, shall in no case be less than 2.4m.

• In the case of a permanent building the number arrived at by calculating at the rate of 20 persons per 9.5 square meters of floor area in respect of such portions as are provided with chairs having backs and arms.

• There shall be sufficient means of artificial ventilation with the help of not less than one ceiling fan for every fifty seats and one exhaust fan for every fifty square meters of the auditorium.

• Guards shall be provided for ceiling fans with Jess than 2.5 meters clearance.

• The licensee shall provide adequate drinking water supply at such places as may be prescribed by the Licensing Authority.. Notices for using such spittoons shall be displayed in prominent parts of the cinema premises.

• Licensees of permanent theatres shall provide water closets at the rate of one for every 250 persons and urinals at the rate of one for every 50 persons.

• Licensees of temporary theatres shall provide as many water closets and urinals as may be specified by the Licensing Authority.

• THE DISTANCE FROM THE SEATING TO THE SCREEN IS ABOUT 2.5 M WHICH IS A HINDRANCE TO THE VIEWERS.• THE TICKET COUNTER IS OUTSIDE THE CINEWORLD LOBBY AREA BEACAUSE OF WHICH IT SHARES THE SAME SPACE AS THAT OF THE OBERON MALL SHOPS.• IN CASE OF OBERON MALL THE EXIT CORRIDOR DIRECT THE VIEWERS TO THE MAIN CORRIDOR OF THE MALL WHICH CAUSES A HINDRANCE DURING PEAK HOURS.• USUALLY PEOPLE TEND TO USE THE ENTRY AS THE EXITS WHICH CAN CAUSE A CONFUSION.• WHEELCHAIR VIEWRS ARE NOT GIVEN SPECIAL PROVISIONS IN OBERON MALL.

DEMERITS:

VIEWERS OPINION

• THE FORM MUST BE ATTRACTIVE IN ORDER TO CATCH VIEWERS ATTENTION.• TOO MUCH OF LIGHT DECORATION WHICH CAN BE DISTRACTING NATURE MUST BE AVOIDED.• SCREEN ROOM OF DIFFERENT SHAPE .• GOOD QAUALITY SCREEN AND SOUND SYSTEM.• MUSEUM AND GRAFFITI WALLS WHICH HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF CLASSIC MOVIES.• RAMPS NOT PREFERRED.• IF THERE ARE TOO MANY ROWS THEN THERE MUST BE PATHS TO BREAK IT IN BETWEEN SO AS TO REDUCE THE UNCOMFORT.
