by ERIN RYAN
PVPHA RECORDINg SECRETARy
Dr. Slvia Oellette (forerl greenan) discssed l-
cers drin her presentation at the PVPHA eneral eet-
in Oct. 20.
Accordin to Oellette, lcers are a coon edical
condition in horses. An estiated 50 percent of foals and
one-third of adlt horses conned to stalls a have ild
lcers. up to 60 percent of show horses and 90 percent of
racehorses a develop oderate to severe lcers.
To nderstand wh horses are prone to lcers, it ishelpfl to know soe horse anato. Holdin onl abot
for allons, the horses stoach is sall copared to
hans. It is divided into two distinct parts. The non-
landlar portion (esophaeal reion) is lined b tisse
siilar to the linin of the esophas. The landlar por-
tion is lined with landlar tisse, which prodces h-
drochloric acid and pepsin, an enze needed for the
diestion of food. This part of the diestive sste also
prodces sbstances to protect the stoach fro the ef-
fects of the acid and enzes.
In hans, eatin stilates the prodction of hdro-chloric acid. In the horse, hdrochloric acid is constantl
bein prodced. If a horse does not eat, the acid acc-
lates and can start to irritate the stoach, especiall the
non-landlar portion.
There can be ltiple factors that can increase the risk
of lcers in horses, incldin the followin:
Fasting (not eating):Horses evolved to raze, eat-
in an sall eals freqentl. This wa the stoach
is rarel ept and the stoach acid has less of a daa-
in effect. If horses and foals do not eat freqentl, the
acid bilds p and lcers are ore likel to develop. yocan elect to provide sall aonts of food ltiple ties
drin the da. Often ha net allows constant razin.
There are tos that spit ot treats when kicked arond.
So there are several options for keepin or horse nib-
blin throhot the da.
Type of feed:The tpe and aont of rohae pla a
role in lcer developent. Rohae, becase it reqires
ore chewin, stilates prodction of ore saliva. The
swallowed saliva helps to netralize stoach acid. There
is an increase in acid prodction when concentrates like
rain are fed. Tr to decrease this tpe of food sorce.
The tpe of rohae is also iportant. Alfalfa is hih
in calci, and it is thoht that this a help decrea
the risk of lcers (fro an article b Dr. Foster).
Amount of exercise:As the aont of exercise
creases, there is often less chances to feed (ore fastin
less rohae) and heihtened stress, which increa
the risk of lcer developent. Exercise a increase t
tie it takes for the stoach to ept, so lare aon
of acid can reain in an ept stoach for a prolon
period of tie.
Stress: Stress itself a decrease the aont of blo
ow to the stoach, which akes the linin of the stoach ore vlnerable to injr fro stoach acid.
Medications: Chronic se of non-steroidal anti-
aator drs sch as phenlbtazone and nini
eline (Banaine) will also increase the likeliho
of lcer developent.
Signs and symptoms
Sins of lcers can be sbtle and non-specic; so
ties no sins are apparent whatsoever, while oth
ties the sins can be so severe that the reqire a trip
the hospital. ulcers ipact eneral health and can iother diseases like laeness.
In foals, sins inclde interittent colic, often af
nrsin or eatin; poor appetite and nrsin for onl v
brief periods; teeth rindin; excessive salivation; di
rhea; and lin on the back.
In adlt horses, sins inclde poor appetite or bac
in awa fro food at feedin tie; weiht loss and po
bod condition, sch as a dll and dr coat or; not a
in scle ass; colic or recrrin colic; ental dllne
behavioral or attitde chanes; poor perforance; exc
sive lin down while in the stall; stretchin to rinarelctance to allopin; discofort pon tihtenin t
irth; teeth rindin; or excessive salivation.
Dressae horses a show a poor tolerance to late
work, sweat profsel or refse to contine a ovee
Diagnostics
To dianose lcers, a veterinarian can perfor bloo
work to deterine whether the horses red blood c
cont is lowa sin of a severe lceror low packed c
vole, also known as heatocrit.
The veterinarian can also perfor a fecal test to sear

for occlt blood, a sin of activel bleedin lcers. The
Scceed Test, which is done stall side on a fresh anre
saple, distinishes between bleedin fro the sto-
ach or hind t (a sin of riht dorsal colon lcers). The
test costs abot $50 and takes abot 10 intes.
A astroscopwhich allows the vet a visal inspection
of the interior of the stoach b eans of a astroscope
inserted via the nose throh the esophascan also be
done. Nevertheless, the horse cant eat within 12 hors of
the start of the operation or drink within eiht hors to
ive the vet a clear view of the stoach. The horse is also
sedated. Becase the eqipent is now portable, its pos-
sible to do the exa in or own barn.
A veterinarian will se a cobination of edical his-
tor, clinical sins, laborator tests, and special exai-
nations to ake the dianosis. gastric lcers can be
life-threatenin. If or horse or foal is showin sins of
astric lcers, contact or veterinarian iediatel.
Treatment
medications and chanes in anaeent practices are
the cornerstones of therap for eqine astric lcers. Dif-
ferent edications are sed to decrease acid prodction,
bffer the acid that is prodced, and protect the linin of
the stoach fro the effect of the acid.
A veterinarian a prescribe acid blockers, sch
gastroard and ulcerard (Oerprazole). gastroard
the onl dr that copletel cres lcers; however,
expensive and reqires a 28-da dosin ccle. Its ad
istered as an oral paste with a once-per-da dosae. T
eneric version is one-tenth the cost, bt it doesnt wo
Stick with gastroard or Oerprazole.
Other options inclde stoach and acid prod
tion inhibitors like Cietidine (Taaet) or Ranitidi
(Zantac). The edications are adinistered three to fo
ties per da, one hor before feedin. These edic
tions are a little ore cost effective and better tolerat
b horses.
Liited absorption stoach coatinssch as scr
fate, ilk of anesia, papaa jice or aloe vera jice
dont do anthin to redce acid prodction, so the do
help the horse heal.
In addition to edications, chanes in anaee
are alost alwas necessar, incldin increasin taont of rohae in the diet; increasin the nb
of feedins; avoidin or decreasin the aont of ra
sin sppleents to add vitains; sin ineral a
veetable oils to add calories the horse a need; ivi
probiotics to aid in diestion; and/or redcin stress

SPECIAL TO THE DISPATCH
Editors note: Annamay Naef, a xture at local gymkha-
nas and riding events, died in a car accident at the be-
ginning of October. The following eulogy was given at
her memorial service by Sean Martin, her trainer. It has
been edited only for clarity.
What ore can I add that ost of o havent alreadred ot. Everones presence here todaand all the
well wishes that have been received the last cople das
shows the ipact she had on peoples lives, whether o
knew her or not. I think the best word to describe An-
naa is what Lisa alwas called her b, Annaazin.
She trl was a beatifl and aazin on lad.
As an of o know, Annaa rode with e for a
ver lon tiealost half her life. Which, of corse, she
was ore than happ to reind e of all the tie: Sean,
ore ettin old! Ladies and entleen, I onl 30
ears old, bt o know how it is. Fro a teenaers per-
spective, thats old.
Annaa was one of ver rst stdents and alw
held a special place in heart. Over the ears, she an
becae ver close. With all the ranch trips and traveli
we did, its difclt not to. She and I were alwas in s
with each other, no atter what we were doin or wh
we were talkin abot.
Bt when it cae to Annaa and I havin to plan o
travelin schedle toether, rin ot what trips s
wanted to o on never ade sense to e. In ya, this a bi copetition [with a] ood pa ot, awesoe t
ots, ood food. Bt Annaa never wanted to o to th
event, becase she said it was too far of a drive. Its a
a for-and-a-half- [to] ve-hor drive to ya.
I know ost of o are thinkin, WOW that is a lo
drive. Bt she was ore than happ to o with e
hal a horse p to Brideport. If o dont know whe
Brideport is, its jst north of maoth, so its a o
six-, abe seven-hor drive. Bt the kicker was after
dropped the horse in Brideport we were oin to he
over to Santa Rosa, which is an additional for or

hors. So in total for that da we drove abot 10-12 hors,
bt drivin to ya was too lon of a drive for her.
[It] never ade sense to e, bt she was the best road
copanion o can ask for becase she loved to talk, so it
was eas to sta awake. Bt the last hor everwhere was
toh drivin, becase she wold alwas know when that
last hor was and pass ot so I had to fend for self.
Ive coe to the conclsion that Annaa obviosl
loved this state, becase she never wanted to travel ot-
side of it, bt she wold spend all da drivin anwhere in
California. [She] never wanted to drive ot of state, even
if it was a shorter drive. Bt she and I ot to see a lot of
this beatifl state toether, and I was ver fortnate to
spend it with her.
Annaas ost pride and jo had to be denitel Tan-
o. When the rst approached e abot workin Tano,
I had never started a draft horse before, bt I said, Oh
well, Ill ive it a tr.
So I pll p with the trailer, and Heinz is walkin thisbi, beatifl paint shire down the trail. We o to pt
Tano in the trailer, bt he wasnt too thrilled abot that
idea. I dont know how an of o realize this, bt Heinz
is a prett bi stron , and Tano anked hi ot of
the trailer like a ra doll. I said to self, Jiin Christ-
as, what a I ettin self into. Becase copared to
Heinz, I one of those elves in the Wizard of Oz, [think-
in], What on Earth is he going to do to me?
We did anae to et Tano in the trailer; it took s 45
intes. Bt we did it. Workin with Tano ended p be-
in a breeze. He has a ood head on hi, ver sart, andhe picked thins p no proble.
So after a little tie, we brin Tano back for Annaa
to start workin with hi. I believe it was the rst ride
or second ride on hi, I dont recall. Bt she ended p
havin an eqipent alfnction. He did a in lead
chane, and the cinch ended p breakinand off she
went. We red as bi as Tano is, we had tie to rn
to Starbcks rab a cople acchiatos for s and an ice
pack for Annaa before she hit the rond. She had a
cople ore falls after that becase of Tanos bab an-
tics. Bt the thin abot Annaa is when she set a oal,she was bond and deterined to reach that oal. So she
cowirld p and pshed throh it.
Tano is not like an other draft horse. When he trns,
hes qick, and becase of his size, its like bein in a slin
shot. Annaa loved rnnin in khanas; Tano loved
sortin. gkhana and sortin are the two events that
Annaa loved to do. She loved khanas ore, bt I
think she did the sortin for e and Tano.
For those of o that do not know what ranch sortin
is, Ill ive o a brief explanation. We have to rond pens
pt toether, so the arena looks like a re-eiht with a
