Carol Dweck (2006), Mindset p. 7 How We Want Teachers to Feel About Coaching How Can We Change Coaching Perceptions? Inform Coaching has become a mainstream form of teacher professional development and need not be associated with the emotions of shame or fear. C S + F Mindset Shift Very few teachers served by TCT have a remediation plan (3%). Coaching is not just for teachers who demonstrate poor performance and hasnt been for over a decade. We need to bring those who have this outdated perception up to speed. Share Data: For the past 5 years, 99% of teachers receiving TCT coaching services rated their experiences as positive and meaningful. Access Coaching First (as often as possible): When teachers request coaching as a Last Resort or coaching is used as a Final Step before Non-Renewal, it gets a bad rap so others in the same location will not want to participate. Principals can and do discuss with teachers the idea of accessing coaching early before anything formal is required. THANK YOU! This is happening and helps teachers (and coaches) be less stressed about the coaching process. TIME IS OUR FRIEND! Successful Instructional Coaching Requires: a competent and caring coach a willing and able teacher a meaningful and measurable goal Trust TCT Confidentiality Agreement: TCT coaches encourage and prefer that teachers keep principals in the loop. The amount of 3-way communication is up to the teacher. Regular and Special Education TCT Coaches Are Considered Generalists and Provide Personalized K-12 Coaching Support. Leading Research From States and Districts Across the Country Los Angeles, CA (2012): National Board Certified teachers outperform other teachers with the same levels of experience by 0.07 and 0.03 standard deviations in elementary math and English/language arts (ELA) respectively, which is roughly equivalent to two months of additional math instruction and one month of additional ELA instruction. Gwinnett County, GA (2012): National Board Certified teachers outperform other teachers with the same levels of experience. Florida (2011): Certification by the National Board is correlated with achievement in math and reading in both elementary and middle school. Charlotte, NC (2010): We found that NBCTs were significantly more effective...than their non- NBCT counterparts in several EOC tested courses: Algebra II, Biology, Civics and Economics, Chemistry, and Geometry.
