We highly recommend you check your water supplies once a year to ensure that recycled water remains connected to the outlet it’s intended for — particularly if you’ve conducted plumbing, landscaping or renovation works. Our plumbers ensure your pipes are correctly fitted when they’re initially connected (and prior to 1 July 2015 the Victorian Building Authority did this). However an annual self-check is a must and it’s easy to do: 1. Turn off the valve on your drinking water meter. Leave the purple recycled water meter on. 2. Turn on all sink, bath and shower taps (both hot and cold) one by one. All taps should run dry after a short time. 3. After the taps have run dry, flush all toilets. They should refill as normal. 4. Turn on all outdoor taps. All outdoor drinking water taps (if you have them) should run dry while the purple recycled water taps should continue to run. If this is not the case it could indicate a cross connection, which is where the two water supplies are connected to the wrong outlets. Note: Before turning your drinking water meter back on, ensure all drinking water taps are turned off and then turned on slowly to allow trapped air to escape. If you suspect anything out of the ordinary with your recycled water connection, visit southeastwater.com.au/recycledwater or call 131 694 and ask for our Plumbing Coordinator. If you do have a plumber conduct any works at your property, ask them to perform a similar ‘flow’ check. This could be as simple as them turning off the stop tap on the drinking water meter and then checking if any water comes out of a drinking water tap. Our plumbers ensure your pipes are correctly fitted when they’re initially connected (and prior to 1 July 2015 the Victorian Building Authority did this). However an annual self-check is a must and it’s easy to do:

3. After the taps have run dry, flush all toilets. They should refill as normal.

4. Turn on all outdoor taps. All outdoor drinking water taps (if you have them) should run dry while the purple recycled water taps should continue to run. If this is not the case it could indicate a cross

With recycled water you can water your garden knowing you’re doing your bit for the environment. Just keep in mind that an increase in water usage can also mean an increase to your water and sewerage bill.

How to use Class A recycled water

What’s happened in 2016-17?

What’s next?

You’re fortunate enough to have two water supplies at your home. As well as having drinking water for drinking, bathing and use in the kitchen, you also have recycled water supplied to your toilet and outdoor taps. If your home was built after 1 January 2015, you’ll most likely have it supplied to your laundry too.

Here’s a reminder about how recycled water should and shouldn’t be used around the home.

We’ve also supported 4,500 customers through our South East Water Assist program, offering financial assistance and help accessing a concession or setting up a payment plan. For more information on the services available to you, visit southeastwater.com.au/paymentsupport

We’re planning ahead for the future to ensure we continue to deliver sustainable, fit-for-purpose water while securing Melbourne’s liveability. Here are three projects we’re delivering:

• At the Aquarevo residential development in Lyndhurst, homes will feature a range of unprecedented water saving features to help reduce demand on drinking water supplies. Homes will be plumbed with three sources of water: drinking, recycled and rainwater.

• We’re working to create a water sensitive community through

Australia’s largest urban renewal project. Fishermans Bend will cover approximately 485 hectares in the heart of Melbourne. This redevelopment will house 80,000 residents and provide employment for 80,000 people by 2050.

• We’ve used customer feedback to shape our proposed services and prices for 2018-23, including a reduction to recycled water usage and service charges. This is outlined in our 2018 Price Submission which is with the Essential Services Commission for a final decision. To view our submission, visit yoursay.southeastwater.com.au
