Overview Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) affects 75-80% of premenopausal women to varying degrees. It encompasses a wide range of symptoms that occur exclusively within the 10 to 14 days prior to menses. Symptoms are usually mild and include mood swings, food cravings, abdominal bloating, fatigue and irritability. While the etiology of PMS remains unclear, evidence suggests that fluctuating ovarian hormone levels, changes in serotonergic and GABA-mediated neurotransmission, and prostaglandin production play important roles in its frequency and intensity.1

Factors that are strongly linked to PMS include poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle and micronutrient deficiencies.2 Many women find that small changes in diet and lifestyle, if followed consistently, attenuate PMS symptoms. Evidence from numerous clinical studies supports the efficacy of certain vitamins, minerals, botanicals and essential fatty acids in mitigating or managing PMS.3 This protocol outlines nutritional and lifestyle modalities supported by both published studies and clinical experience.*

Dietary & Lifestyle RecommendationsNutrition:

• Eat a diet rich in essential fatty acids. Decrease consumption of animal fats while increasing omega-3 intake through cold-water fish, such as sardines, herring and wild salmon. Two tablespoons per day of ground flaxseeds provide fiber and lignans to support hormonal balance.

• Limit salt intake to moderate bloating and fluid retention.

• Consume whole foods high in fiber, phytonutrients and complex carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid sugar, sweetened beverages and packaged foods.

• Limit caffeine and alcohol, particularly during the luteal phase (the two weeks prior to menses).

• Consume fermented foods such as tempeh, unsweetened yogurt and miso soup.

Exercise:• Engage in aerobic exercise at least 30 minutes per day, three to five days per week during menstrual cycle.4

Stress:• Manage stress. Consider breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, and calming teas such as chamomile and holy basil.

Sleep:• Take five minutes for a simple three-step breathing exercise prior to bedtime: Breathe in slowly through the nose for four

seconds, hold for seven seconds and exhale through the mouth for eight seconds.

• Drink a cup of holy basil tea, which may also support relaxation and sleep onset.

• Take two capsules of Best-Rest Formula as needed 30 to 60 minutes prior to bedtime for additional sleep support.*

Duration The foundation products are intended for continuous, long-term use. The targeted support products may be taken either continuously or during the luteal phase of the cycle. This protocol may require several months to take effect.*

Assessment A symptom diary is helpful for identifying dietary and lifestyle patterns associated with symptoms and for monitoring progress. It also helps to identify symptoms that may not be PMS-related (e.g. those that also occur earlier in the cycle).
