Dear Potential New Member,

We are so excited that you are interested in joining sorority life at Purdue University. Throughout this process, you will meet some of the most amazing and dynamic women on our campus. They are giving, smart and kind, and we have no doubt that you are about to make friendships that will last a lifetime.

In addition to joining a sorority, you will also be joining the Panhellenic sisterhood and greater fraternity/sorority community at Purdue. It is within this community where you will create friendships, build yourself as a leader, serve the community, and ultimately become the best version of yourself.

The recruitment process may seem quick and overwhelming, but we are confident that if you trust the process and take advantage of every opportunity to become part of this sisterhood, you will find your home by the end of this journey. Use this book to take notes about each sorority you visit. Write down the names of women with whom you made a strong connection, feelings you got when you were with members, and values of the organization that matter to you. Have an open mind and remember that each sorority is unique and that it sometimes takes longer than one or two rounds to grasp what they have to offer.

We truly believe that joining a sorority was one of the best decisions we ever made and cannot wait to see you find your place in our sisterhood. We hope you enjoy and trust the primary recruitment process and welcome to our community!

In Sisterhood, The Panhellenic Recruitment Team

Financial TerminologyParlor Fee: A fee that both live-in members and live-out members pay in order to upkeep common areas of the house that are used by everyone.

Chapter Dues: Dues that are paid to the Chapter’s International or National Headquarters.

Local Dues: Dues that are more specific to the Chapter.

Badge Fee: Your badge is also known as your initiation pin, and most chapters require you to purchase your own pin upon initiation.

Date Functions: Chapters may host Formals, Semi-Formals, or other spontaneous dances and some Chapters have this as an additional fee to attend while others include the fee to attend in the dues you normally pay.

Family Days: Throughout both the Spring and Fall Semesters there are various events such as Dad’s Day, Mom’s Day, or Parents Weekend and some Chapters have this as an additional fee, while others include this fee.

Other InformationJoining a sorority is a financial obligation and we have chapters that are both housed and unhoused on our campus. If you were to receive a bid from a housed chapter, there are live-in requirements that are listed on their respective chapter information page. A “+” listed next to the live-in requirement indicates that you may be expected to live-in for another year if the house is not full to capacity. This can be clarified at each chapter during the rounds.

Description of RoundsOpen House Round- August 23rd and August 24thOpen house rounds are the first of the four rounds of primary recruitment. You will visit each of the 18 chapters with your recruitment counselor (Gamma Chi) as well as the rest of your group. This is a great time to warm up to sorority life and recruitment at Purdue!

First Invitational- August 25thBe yourself! The second round of events offers a better opportunity to get to know the chapter as you will gain better insight into each chapter’s sisterhood. There are up to 13 events in this round. Be sure to look for certain qualities and values you want in a sorority.

Second Invitational- August 31stDuring the third round of events, you will have the opportunity to connect on a deeper level with women. Feel free to ask questions as you wish. There are up to 8 events in this round. The sorority women should be able to help answer questions about sorority life by sharing personal stories and feelings about chapter life.

Preference Round- September 1stThis is the last and fourth round of events. There are up to 2 events in this round. These events are more serious and most chapters will have a ritual ceremony. It is during this round that the sorority women will reveal to you what brought them to their chapter. It is a special day for you as well as the sorority sisters.

Bid Day- September 2ndThe conclusion of Primary Recruitment is Bid Day! You will meet with your Gamma Chi who will give you your bid card from the sorority that has been mutually selected. Following the bid distribution, you will go to your chapter’s Bid Day celebration! This day is the exciting end of Recruitment and the beginning of the development of your new “home” away from home - all your hard work during recruitment will have finally paid off!
