December 3, 2012 1 (4) Purchasing Managers’ Index PMI inches up to 43.2 in November – continued contraction of the industrial economy The PMI rose slightly from 43.1 in October to 43.2 in November. The industrial economy thus remains in a continued weak state. The production index made the most significant positive contribution to the PMI, while the indices for delivery times and new orders also rose. The employment index continued to fall, accounting for the largest negative contribution to the composite index. Companies’ production plans were somewhat less pessimistic, but taken together with fewer new orders and shrinking order backlogs, the job market will likely remain tight. Suppliers’ commodity and intermediate goods prices continued to fall, though the corresponding index increased somewhat, indicating that this downward trend began to level off in November. This suggests that global demand pressure remains weak.
