About Purba Medinipur District
Purba Medinipur or East Medinipur is located in the southern most part of the BurdwanDivision of West Bengal with its headquarters at Tamluk. It is one of the 18administrative districts of West Bengal and it was carved out of the original Medinipurdistrict on January 1, 2002. During the British rule Purba Medinipur witnessed manypolitical movements. In the time of Quit India Movement in Tamluk, a parallel governmentknown as the Tamralipta Jatiya Sarkar was formed. In 2007, Purba Medinipur saw theNandigram violence, an incident of police firing that killed 14 farmers. Mani Lal Bhaumik,an eminent Indian born American physicist and an eminent author was born in 1931 inthe Medinipur district. He was honoured by many great awards, among which MahatmaGandhi Humanitarian Award in 2005 and Padma Shree Award in 2011 are the foremost.
Geographically, the district lies at 21°94'N latitude and 87°78'E longitude. The districtoccupies an area of 4,713 sq km and it is bounded by Odisha on the south-west, the Bayof Bengal on the south of the Hooghly river and South 24 Parganas district on the eastand Howrah district on the north-east. The chief river of the district is Hooghly River.The climate of the district is tropical. Its climate is characterized by hot summer withhigh humidity, abundant rainfall in the monsoon and moderate winter. The actual rainfallin the district was 1798.4 mm in the year of 2015-16.
Administrative wise, the district is divided into 4 subdivisions- Tamluk, Haldia, Egra andContai.Moreover it comprises 25 sub- districts, 25 towns and 2994 villages. There are 4Lok Sabha constituencies and 16 Assembly constituencies in the district.
According to 2011 the district has a population of 50,95,875 (persons) including26,29,834 (males) and 24,66,041 (females). The rank of the district is 8th in state and21st in India in terms of population. The district has a sex ratio of 938 females for every1000 males. The major religions are Hindu and Muslim with 85.24% and 14.59% of thetotal population respectively.
It was in the year 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj announced the district as one ofthe country's 250 most backward districts. It is one of the eleven districts in WestBengal currently which is receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant FundProgramme (BRGF). Mainly the economy of the district is based on the agriculture. Thecore agricultural crops of the district are rice, wheat, barley, maize, pulses, oilseed,rapeseed, mustard, jute, potato and ginger. Engineering, chemicals and handloomweaving are the fore most industries of the district which are also contributing in itseconomy. In the year 2013-2014 the gross domestic product of the district was Rs51,19,879 lakhs at current price.

The district has provided a great platform for the higher education. The district hasnumerous government and private colleges. Some of the reputed colleges in the districtare Bajkul Milani Mahavidyalaya, College of Engineering and Management, Egra SaradaShashi Bhusan College, Haldia Government College, Haldia Institute of Technology, HaldiaLaw College, Khejuri College, Maharaja Nandakumar Mahavidyalaya, Mahishadal GirlsCollege, Mahishadal Raj College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate of the districtis 87.02% (persons) out of which 92.32% (males) and 81.37% (females).
Kiranmoy Nanda, an illustrious Indian politician and the member of the Samajwadi Partywas born at Mugberia in the district. In the year 1982-2011 he was the Fisheries Ministerin the Left Front cabinet in the West Bengal. He was also the general secretary of theWest Bengal Socialist Party for many years. Lakshman Chandra Seth, a distinguishedIndian politician and the member of the Communist Party of India was born on 11 April,1946 in Purba Medinipur. He is a former Member of Parliament from the Tamlukconstituency.
The sets of tourist places in the district allure numerous travellers from different parts ofthe world. Tamluk, a beautiful picnic place in the district is located on the bank ofRupnarayan River . Devi Barghobhima, a temple of Goddess Kali is an ancient templesituated in Tamluk and is considered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The ArchaeologicalMuseum of Tamluk is marvellous which contains the antique pieces of tamra (copper)and has preserved a tamralipta of Greek inscriptions. Some other famous age old templesof Tamluk are Jagannath Temple, Hari Temple, Mahaprabhu Temple, Ram Jiu Temple,Rajbari Temple etc. Panskura, a place in the district is known as "Flower land" since manyof its farmers are engaged in the flower cultivation and its flowers are exported not onlyall across the country but also to the various foreign countries. People from far distanceplace come to Panskura to see the variety of flowers. Mahishadal, Digha, Mandarmaniand Haldia are some sea side places in the district which are also serve as the prefecttourist destinations.
