Introduction
Ice breaker:
Introduce yourself and explain that you will be teaching
the class important health information they must learn
because they are required to go and teach the same to
their parents at home.
Explain that it is about drinking safe water so that they
can remain healthy. Start by asking who fetches water at
home and where. Ask who drank water this morning to
raise their hand. Pick a couple of the children to tell the
class if the water was safe and explain how they could
tell that it is safe.
Explain that at the end of the lesson, each one would
have learned how to make water safe and how to store
it safe between the time of collecting it and drinking it.

Info:- Why take water everyday?
Water helps the body clean out bad stuff and is essential for keeping healthy. If
you don’t drink the required amount of water everyday your body becomes weak
and easily attacked by disease. You must take a lot of water everyday. Taking
lots of water reduces tiredness and improves your attention in class.
- How much water per day?
You should take not less than 8 glasses or 5 big cups of water everyday
- What kind of water is safe?
Not all water we call “drinking water” is safe. Only treated water is safe.
- Dangers of unsafe water
If you take unsafe water you may get dangerous diseases like diarrhea, typhoid,
and cholera.
* Diarrhoea and how it can be prevented
Diarrhea can be deadly. Proper water treatment and storage combined
with basic hygiene will prevent diarrhoeal diseases. To prevent diarrhea,
get water from the cleanest source, treat it with PuR, use a narrow
mouthed container to store your drinking water. When getting water to
drink, use clean cups. Dipping dirty utensil will re-contaminate the water.
Always wash your hands with soap after visiting a toilet, before preparing
food or eating.
* Benefits of diarrhoeal prevention
You will be healthy; you will stay in school and won’t have to be taken to
the clinic.
Activity: Ask the questions listed in the info section above and get the children’s response.
Encourage those who try and applaud those who give correct answers. Prompt
for the right answers and at all times try to get the correct answers from the class
to ensure interaction.

Section 2: How to make your water safe
Info:- Why use PuR?
• It is effective in preventing diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera, dysentery and
other waterborne diseases.
• PuR not only kills germs but also removes dirt, parasites and poison like
heavy metals and pesticides like DDT.
• PuR leaves a long lasting protection such that your drinking water is free
from re-contamination.
• PuR water may have a mild metal taste and chlorine smell which helps
you to know that the water you are drinking has been treated and is
perfectly safe.
• PuR is cheaper, easier to use, and better for the environment than
boiling.
• PuR takes little time compared with dealing with sickness. We spend time
washing clothes and that’s very important. But it’s even more important
to clean the water we use since it’s fundamental to our health.
- Use the following hand washing steps to illustrate to the class how they should
wash their hands, then proceed to do the demo.
Wet hands with lots of water.
Rub hands briskly to clean off dirt.
Use soap.
Remove dirt underneath nails.
Dry hands with a clean cloth.

- How to use PuR
- Storage
• After treating your water, use a safe
storage vessel to keep the water safe.
A safe vessel has a narrow mouth so
that people don’t dip dirty cups into the
water. A safe water vessel will avoid
recontamination
• Examples of safe water vessels include, a
jerry can, a pot with a cover and tap, or a
jar with a cover.
Get 10 litres of water from your usual source and pour into a bucket.
Cut the PuR sachet at the top corner.
Add the sachet to the 10 liters of water.
Stir briskly for 5 minutes.
Wait for 5 minutes as impurities settle at the bottom.
Filter the water using a clean pure cotton cloth.
Pour filtered water into a safe water vessel or drinking water jerrycan and cover.
Leave water to sit for 20 minutes.
Water is safe to drink after 20 minutes.
Throw the impurities away from the children.
Wash the cloth using clean water.

Activity: Pass out a few PuR sachets around the class so that the children may touch and
familiarise themselves with PuR.
* Explain that PuR is a water purifier just like one used to treat drinking water in
USA or UK. It is not to be eaten or played with.
* Go over the information in the info section above.
* Get a table in the middle of the classroom in full view of everyone.
* Go over the steps in how to use PuR above.
* Ask for two volunteers to come and demonstrate how to use PuR.
* Guide the volunteers to carry out a PuR demo.
* After the demo let the children as questions as you wait for the 20 minutes. Keep
the questions few and go over the last section of “how to teach the parents” after
which drink the water and get as many children to drink the treated water.
* Remind the children that the metal taste PuR puts helps them to know that the
water has been treated and is safe.

Section 3: Is your water safe?
Info:- Can clear water be contaminated?
Water can look clear but contaminated Just because water looks clear doesn’t
mean it is safe. There are could be millions of germs in the water that can be
seen by the eye.
- What are your water sources? Is the water from your source safe to drink right
away?
Not all our water sources are safe. Water from rivers, wells, springs, lakes and
sometimes boreholes and taps may not be safe. Always ensure that your water
is treated with PuR before you drink it.
- Water is more often contaminated after collection
Most of the time, water is contaminated after collecting it for example from dirty
jerry cans or buckets. Even borehole or tap water must be treated with PuR. PuR
treats and cleans water making it safe to drink without boiling.
Activity: Ask the questions listed in the info section above and get the children’s response.
Encourage those who try and applaud those who give correct answers. Prompt
for the right answers and at all times try to get the correct answers from the class
to ensure interaction.
Emphasise that unless one is sure the water was boiled or treated appearing clear
is no guarantee that it is safe. To illustrate this, go over the following instructions:
* Open and bottle of clean mineral water and agree with the class that the water
safe (because it is passed through rigorous cleaning methods before it’s
bottled)
* Drink some of the water to show your confidence in the bottled water
* Get another bottle previously filled with dirty turbid water (visibly brown) for the
children to compare. Agree with the class that such water can’t be trusted and
is full of germs.
* Get 2 volunteers to go out of the classroom to a place where they cannot see
what is going on in the classroom.

* In full view of the remaining children in class, pour some of the dirty water into
the bottle with the clean water (little enough not to change colour but for the
kids to see that some of the germs in the dirty water have gone into the “clean”
one
* Agree with the children in the class that the “clean” water has been contaminated
and even though it still looks clear, it is unsafe for drinking and can cause
diseases.
* Put both bottles on one table, call back the 2 volunteers and ask them to choose
between the two bottles which one is safe and to drink some of the water.
* (They will take the clean bottle and most likely the class will shout or express
discomfort warning them not to drink the water. If that doesn’t happen, make
sure the 2 volunteers don’t actually drinking the water)
* Ask one of the children to explain to the volunteers (and the rest of the class)
why the water is not safe for drinking.
* Emphasise that being clear is not a good way of knowing whether the water is
safe but that having boiled the water or treated the water with PuR and stored it
correctly is the only way to know that water is safe. Tell them that water treated
with PuR has a characteristic smell and taste which helps them to be sure the
water was treated and is safe for drinking.

Section 4: Safe water is your responsibility.
Info:- You will be given a few sachets of PuR to take home.
- Your “homework” is to take the sample package to parents, and demonstrate
how to use PuR when the parents are at home.
- Make sure that all your family member learn how to use PuR
- When you reach home hand over the package to your parent (mother of father).
The brochure attached to the package will explain that your homework is to teach
them how to use PuR and so they will be expecting your demonstration.
- After the demonstration and after 20 minutes, you may all drink the water.
- Let your parents know that PuR is available in the shops so that they can buy it,
so you may have safe water always.
- Always remind your parents to buy PuR so you can treat your water
- Drink only treated or boiled water
- Always store your treated drinking water in a designated safe water vessel that
you always keep clean
- You could win yourself great prizes including school fees, uniform, books, sets,
PuR backets, jerrycans, etc if you excel in knowledge about using PuR to make
water safe, and get your home to use PuR to avoid diseases.
- In order to win the prizes your parent must fill in or complete the “tear off” section
on the brochure and give it to you to bring back to school within one week. Your
teacher will mark it and include you in the draw where many children and parents
will win great prizes.
- To win the biggest prize, return the “tear off” section with 5 empty sachets of PuR
attached.
Activity: Go over the points highlighted in the info section above and ensure the children
understand their responsibility.
Call for two volunteers to role play how they will teach their parents. Encourage for
a positive response by reminding them of the prize to win in the overall program
campaign. If you have gifts on hand you may give them as incentives. Such may
include sweets, T-shirts, pens, books etc

Have one pose as the father, another as the mother and 2-3 as other household
members. One child should then start the dialogue the way they hope to approach
the parent, hand over the PuR gift package and explain the whole process of why
use PuR and how to use PuR. (No need for physical demonstration but highlighting
the steps)
