Pumps as Turbines (PaT) Hydro Systems

Basic principles of operationA centrifugal pump, fi tted with an impeller of the correct geometry, can operate in reverse rotation mode as a turbine. It works on the same principle as a Francis Turbine. The energy is recovered from the pressure diff erential (head), whilst the water fl ow is passed back in to the existing system. The Pump as Turbine can be used to generate electricity to the grid network or be directed for local supply. Another option, rather than generate electricity is that the PaT is used to directly drive additional rotating equipment.

Key benefits of a PaT system ■ Lower initial cost when compared to traditional turbines ■ Utilises standard and field proven products ■ Simple and robust construction ■ Availability of spares coupled with ease of maintenance ■ High efficiency (up to 86%) ■ 24 hour energy supply ■ Return on investment period is short, when compared with other

renewable energy methods ■ Turbine manufactured in UK, easily transported and installed with

minimal civils works

Applications for the Pump as Turbine ■ Damping excess pressure in water systems ■ Balancing of pressure in supply mains and ■ Break Pressure Tanks at different elevations ■ Extraction of excess pressure at the inlet of ■ Water Treatment Works ■ Water Supply Systems

Extraction of hydro energy from natural resources

■ Reservoirs and Dams utilising the the spill and compensation flows. ■ Hydro recovery systems from rivers and streams ■ Canal Lock systems

Industrial application ■ Pressure damping in cooling water circulation systems ■ Reverse osmosis systems ■ Reduction of process water pressure
